You are not just an excellent knowledgeable mechanic you are also an excellent friend with the great care to help your friend with the engine to get his Honda back up..!! GBY you.
Just did an entire top end replacement and bottom end rebuild on a DR250 with this same problem of oil starvation. Someone previously welded a broken cam chain tensioner at the wrong angle causing it to rub and throw metal into the engine. Got it mostly done and running again but have a couple of small things to tie up. Having the option for an aftermarket head is massive as that can be so expensive for a used OEM. I paid as much for the head as I did for the entire bike for that DR. My first 4 stroke rebuild and it was def a learning experience
I can’t wait to see that new head. I’ll probably get one myself if it goes well with you. Honda really buggered a bunch of engines by not putting a bearing on the ignition side of the cams. There is a cam company in Cali that does a double roller cam of your choice but the last time I checked the cam alone was much more than this entire package plus they don’t sell retail. One thing I noticed about this one, they deleted the decompression assembly. Good or bad?
Me too, it’s going to kill me not being able to test ride this off the bat when it’s done. I’ll have to wait until my bud can get it back in his bike and running to get the low down.
Great watch on a Sunday morning I think this is Honda XRTV 200 special . Lucky escape with the broken piston bits . Still $300 for a 200 seams a bargain if I heard right .
@Garage2Trail btw that was the first time I noticed you used time lapse to speed up the casing bolts removal. I like your videos, there's no nonsense and appreciate the effort you go to for not a huge amount of viewers, hope you get more.
@@Garage2Trail I’ve seen that happen before.that stuff in the oil pump was that a piece of a piston ? It sure looked like it,love the videos. Good stuff !!
29:08 the top cover of that new head is from a ATC200X. They dont have a decomp and they have 4 fins on the top instead of 3.
13:50 quick tip, actuate the clutch after getting the bolts out and it will push the clutch cover off.
Thanks, good to know 👍

That’s what friends are for! 🙏 👍

Yes for sure !! 🙏🙏🙏
Decent 4 point castle nuts on that one!
Good work on the oil passages,(keep flushing 'em) hope the pump has survived.
Hadn't seen that aftermarket head before. I probably would have gone that route on mine had I known. I'm really interested to see how that performs.
I have 3 xr200's all with Leezy Berlti heads from the UK. Great setup your buddy will be very happy. Totally wakes up the power 👍🏻
Awesome! I may need to get one for my 86 or 87 too. Thanks for the heads up!
Decent price on that new head - hope you dont get stung too badly for import etc 🤞
Yeah it really is a good deal. If it works good I’ll probably go the same route on the top end on my 86
Great video! Interesting head design. This was a perfect example of overuse of RTV.
Thanks! Yeah I had a good idea that was the problem even before digging into it.

Always satisfying to figure it out and correct someone else’s mistake. I had a 1985 DR250 for a little while too.

Very cool diagnosis video right here.
Thanks Chuck!
Excellent video! Thanks for Sharing!!
Thanks for tuning in!

Thanks Paul, I’m glad you enjoyed it! Definitely got lucky
I think 86 and up went with a different head gasket and went away with the o ring.
Hey Dan, I think I read that somewhere online too 👍
New cam for an XR200?! Not a bad price either.
You have the strip down of these xr200's off by heart 👍🏼
I have another one for my 87 that I’ll be eventually be doing a top end on too!

Ah , scored cam journals, aka "XL Disease" , only takes letting the oil level get low even once.
You got that right!
Silicone will definitely burn one up . Seen that problem many many times back in my shop days .
It’s amazing how much junk got sucked into the oil passages. Silicon and small metal bits
