I've had the Canon G9 since it was released. Since the camera has 2 custom positions (C1 and C2), you could store 2 separate custom color profiles. Makes it a bit easier to compare plus you don't have to keep re-entering your parameters. To use this, setup your custom color profile, then go to the last item in the camera MENU tab and save to either C1 or C2.
I bought my G9 new in 2008 and it is still in mint condition and has given me 100% reliability ever since. It slips in my pocket easily and is still really nice to use. Can't compete in many ways, obviously, with my Fuji X-T5 or X-H2 but I still use it quite regularly. By the way, I was directed to your site by Tom Calton who spoke highly of you, and it is a good recommendation if this nice little video is representative of your work. I enjoyed this.
The Gs are not “trash” cameras even today - they are pretty bullet-proof compacts that have more than enough megapixels and flexible enough setting modes to produce great stills results, even for publication. The reality is the race for “more” has been fuelled by manufacturers keen to keep selling and has actually become meaningless for most practical applications. I have a couple of different Gs that I bought from new a decade or more ago - I wouldn’t part with them and on many occasions they are more convenient than the SLR/mirrorless while still enabling excellent results to be obtained.
I want to add, this video and others inspired me to buy a canon g10. 14.7 megapixels and this camera has taken some of my favorite digital photos ever. That's not to say I'd use it to replace a DSLR but the results are much better than I was expecting. They aren't good photos for a camera from 2010, they're just good photos, hands down.
i just grab an used Panasonic Lumix LX7 with a great condition for $160 and watching your video makes me feel trying to make the fake Fujifilm looks, and you know what i'm really suprised at how good this old camera with just 10MP and a fake Fuji color looks, and lucky for me that LX7 got 2 customized profile (C1 & C2) so i can just save the recipe and used it whenever i want to. I follow most of your recipe and added some tweaks: Contrast -2 Sharpness -1 Saturation 0 Noise Reduction -2 White Balance: Cloudy +1 Red +2 Blue
I picked up a G10 a few months ago in prime condition and i love it. Its a bit rubbish at night but during the day the colours it produces are amazing. I personally shoot JPG only in positive film profile which i think looks amazing. Its a great pocket camera and in my view one of the best digicams to buy given its professional features if you want them. They are also amazingly well built.
I got one when they came out in 2008. Loved but decided to sell it cos I kind of got bored with photography at the time. Just bought another G10 today though. Should be at my doorstep next week. Looking forward to picking it back up.
Just recently got back into amateur photography after a significant hiatus, where as before I chased “the new big thing” I’ve gone back to the old stuff, also a switch from my familiar Nikon to Canon. picked up an EOS 500, 5D and more recently a G7 for everyday carry, must admit the other two hardly come out with me now, loving the G7 and a huge thanks to you for this video as I’ve got my images looking just how I want them 👍🏻
Probably just clickbait, even by today's standards its still pretty damn good, nothing even close trash .Go use an early 2000s Vivitar if you want actual trash lol
I still have my Canon G10, which has way too many megapickles for its sensor size. But... it produces similar results to the G9 SOOC, and I've found myself reaching for it occasionally in recent months. Mostly because folks like you have inspired me to pick it up again. Awesome to see your results from the G9!
You are the gem! Really! Like your videos and bit of a gag in them! BTW Powershot G9 is my first own digital cam so after your video I decided to give it a second go in 2023! Bow!
The G9 has a more 'filmlike' color to it than the "Fujifilm 400" X-Pro 1 IMO, the G9 looks like Kodak Gold 200 to me which is FAR more iconic than Fujis 400 which was a bit 'meh' to me IRL film. The real deal Fuji 400 was not "pretty" film, it was good stuff but it has a slight blue tending tint cold color to it. Kodak Gold 200 has a "golden" hue summer vibe to it which is massively more iconic to me, I still have hundreds of prints from the Kodak 200 made in the 80s and 90s and mixed in are some Fuji 400 and you can tell immediately which ones. The Fuji was/is probably more accurate to life but that shouldn't be the goal I think, or for me it wouldn't be at any rate. The Gold 200 slight red/yellow tendency look is "nicer" than the boosted blue/green of the Fuji in terms of "retro style" even though it's a bit less accurate, what the Kodak does 'badly' is green/blue which nets you washed out sky blue and muted green without 'pop' but in return it gives you golden sunlight and earth/sand tones that you can almost crunch your teeth on. To be a bit less poetic etc, Fuji 200 was OK, same tint but far less terribad than the 400, Kodak Gold was THE film then, specifically the 200. Where I bought film you'd only really get the Fuji if the Kodak was sold out, or you needed 400 for the speed, which I did when shooting horse riding stuff. For some reason back then it felt "cool" to be shooting 400ASA and Fuji was "more pro" somehow, but now all these years later I much prefer the Kodak look because it's a more relaxed informal 'vibe' to me.
Now I do feel it the same. For me the best look is Kodak Portra 400. Anyways Fujifilm has always been way too cold. That's why I prefer Olympus cameras even today. They do render kinda Kodak like warm relaxed. Olympus E-1 and all the pro compacts of that era (Olympus C-5050) do produce amazing jpegs !
you can get these for a pretty good deal. I found a guy selling 2 of these online for 300,- i bid 150 to buy 1 of them. He said that he wanted to sell everything at once, but that for 150 i could buy everything of him. One of the cameras came new in the box and was never used before, the other one was used but taken care of perfectly. I sold the used one for 150 and kept all the extra accessoires for myself.

Great video George. Thanks for sharing. Just an FYI, I tried these settings on my Canon S90 and I got very similar results. (The S90 has the same sensor and processor as the G11)
Great video! The X-Pro 1 is "modern" with higher contrast and poppy colors. The G9 has a warmer look in the highlights with lower contrast. Both are nice. The G9 just looks so film-like. I have the G11 that I always keep in my Jeep. CCD sensors will always be my favorite for street photography. I just wish the G11 was a little more shaper but that might be my fault not nailing the focus and always shooting in F2.8 ha.

Bad ass! I actually i started collecting these a few months ago locally. Just got a G12,G15,G15,G16. The G15’s were like new. I was Waiting patiently to see who was gonna start the hype first. Great video. I love these lil guys. I use them as my daily’s along with my xpro when i need a little bit of zoom. P.s. awesome monty python clip 😜
Have you happened to notice....if there is a way to "pre-zoom" and set a G12 for "zone focusing"? I saw in the video that Aperture could be fixed. But, could the near and far focus be fixed for quicker street photography? 🙂 (When I used the G12 some years ago for street stuff, there was kind of a long shutter lag....but maybe I need to change my settings.)
Ended up buying this camera off the couple mint that's unlike new condition. Had to charge the battery when I got it. Got the charger and little carry case and an s16 gig SD card in it. I took some pictures and the picture qualities very crisp but in watching a lot of RUclips videos and I guess some person bought this camera new or used to brought it to a photography class and the photographer teacher ended up buying one for cheap and ended up going out and taking some capturing pictures and landscape pictures and they just came out. Unbelievable. He was very surprised on this camera said it's probably his best compact camera that he would recommend
This camera is literally excellent … I have it and it is one of my companion for family moment (and I have the x100f , ricoh gr iii, fuji xf10, LX100 …) but this camera is never too far. Love the Colors and the way I set them to my taste and that’s the most important thing So for web publishing it’s more than you will ever need and for prints I print some A3 photo with no complaint. Nice one. I have two G9's. Great little cam's.. Good thing about the G9 is it's lens is 35mm at its widest aperture.. Not 28mm like the later model's.. Also the Nikon p7000 p7100, are great for monochrome. Thanks for the menu recipes.. 👍
In daylight, my G9 produces lovely images. Its size and lens make it a perfect travel camera. And the built-in flash is backlit fill-in magic. Craigslist: $70.
Thanks to your last video about the G9, I bought one in great condition for €65 and I love taking photos with it. This video has increased my curiosity to shoot even more. Please do more on this camera, I think it is a forgotten gem.
Fun but useful videos! So long as Fuji effects are mentioned I might as well point out that the free Darktable photo app has a Velvia setting. It produce color very close to your "sorta Fuji" samples.
I find it interesting that just on first glance G9 photos don't look that different than the X-Pro photos. I know that if you blow them up and start pixel peeping and all that jazz, the files will start to fall apart but for simple photos that you don't plan on using for "professional" work this seems to be perfectly fine.
Thanks for the video. I have never owned or used the Canon G9, but I have owned and used the Canon G5, G11, and G15. I also own and use the Fuji X-Pro1 and X-Pro2. I agree with your comparisons between their jpeg images.
I have a Canon Powershot G11 that I took along on a recent trip to London and Paris, along with Canon S95 and a Canon G7XII. Took sooo many photos with this kit and just love how they turned out! #OldCamerasRock #OldNotDead
So I have an old Canon Powershot SX40 something or other… I used this camera for years. I’ve had no use for it since I got my Sony ZV-e10, especially since the powershot doesn’t even shoot RAW. I’m actually pretty stoked to take that bad boy out again after watching this video. It’s not as compact as the camera you’re using here, but it could be useful to take on long trips just in case my ZV-e10 batteries run out.
Love how it says kinda a Fuji copy and I’m like wtf how !!! Literally looks nothing like it and then I’m like wait these don’t look anything like Fuji superia either looks like your everyday Fuji digital image to much magenta or too much green in the highlights and shadows .. just looks bad
@@kismat_rana Yeah the A6300 onwards have full picture profiles! I remember the A6000 being limited and having less pleasing colours out of camera - definitely the A6600 is up there with their full frames

I saw another youtuber passionately describe the Canon G7 Mark II as being quite filmlike because of its imperfections. I wonder how different it is then the g9.
I looked at the fuji x weekly site and the recipe you mentioned and I couldn't work out how you decided translate them to the G9 settings you used, any info on that would be great.

I just bought a used olympus pen e-pm1, it's actually my first real camera besides a 110 I had as a child and disposables I used here and there. I would like to achieve the preset you have but do not know how to find the menus for these settings, where are they?
I understand your point bu why transform a Canon G7 or G9 in poor man Fuji ? It is fine to use their ccd sensor in jpg (no choice for the G7) bu I recommend everyone to keep Canon standard colors profile. It is a big strenght of these camera (like Canon 40D / 5D / 5D MK II of the same era)
Hi mate. I have a question. I got the opportunity to get either the G9 or G7 ... The G7 its cheaper, but I been Watching a lot of videos about the G9 and I love it ... Its there any significant changes between models???

Yes let us know if it works well!
Thanks, I ordered one for 70 euro so I have a nice compact to have with me. Despite the numerous DSLR's I have laying around. This is gonna be fun

I have never owned or used the Canon G9, but I have owned and used the Canon G5, G11, and G15.
I also own and use the Fuji X-Pro1 and X-Pro2.
I agree with your comparisons between their jpeg images.
Thank you!
I'll try the same settings on my ixus 70 (aka sd1000)! Thanks George
I bought that camera new.
Took nice pics in daylight for its time and sensor size. High iso was soooo bad. lol
Great video! G9 jpegs are quite yellow looking!
They were supposed to be yellowish for the simulation!
I have found the best replicative film performance out of my Nikon P7000. It is an absolute hidden gem as far as these digital cameras go.
That's great!
I have a Canon Powershot G11 that I took along on a recent trip to London and Paris, along with Canon S95 and a Canon G7XII. Took sooo many photos with this kit and just love how they turned out! #OldCamerasRock #OldNotDead
Awesome!
That's great to hear!
@@GeorgeHolden Good looks on the tips! Definitely going to make a video about what I make with that cam.
Love how it says kinda a Fuji copy and I’m like wtf how !!! Literally looks nothing like it and then I’m like wait these don’t look anything like Fuji superia either looks like your everyday Fuji digital image to much magenta or too much green in the highlights and shadows .. just looks bad
Fair opinion!
Helpful videos! I subscribed 😊
Thanks for the tip.. I replicated it in my G15 with great results..
Good stuff!
Love you man!
You too Dan 😅
Currently I can suggest the Canon G7 Mark III or Ricoh GR III.
Good ideas!
was looking forward to another g9 video and you did it… will you make another one? because after watching your videos i have decided to buy the g9😂❤
Maybe! Let's see what happens 😅
I have a G11, think I need to dig out the battery and play with that again.
i have the G9 and S95 and setup up both to this custom settings. Thanks!
Awesome! I'm getting an S60 soon to try the same settings
😂 Have G5, basically the same camera. Actually any camera from that time. They all had CCD sensors.
Thanks it was my first camera now using a6000 & 6600 !! Didn't even know that g9 have manual custom colour features lmao 😛
It does indeed! Funny I try to remember if the A6000 could use similar settings?
@@GeorgeHolden a6600 does have RGB, gama, logs for colour tweaking but 6000 have basic limitation over colour profile !!
@@kismat_rana Yeah the A6300 onwards have full picture profiles! I remember the A6000 being limited and having less pleasing colours out of camera - definitely the A6600 is up there with their full frames
Have the G3 5 and 6 and love them.
Before Fujifilm came out with the X-pro1 I was really tempted to buy a Canon G11... The only thing that stopped me is the inability to shoot low light
Very different cameras in my opinion!
Thanks a lot. I applied the settings on my S95. Let's see about the results ... 🙋♂️
Let us know!
Just adjusted my settings…THANKS!!
Glad it helped!
You are brilliant.
anyone else catch it? .... power isn't shutter ;) hahaha amazing video though mate!! I recently switched to a flip phone in an attempt at digital minimalism. Been big into the film point and shoot game for a bit now but would love a fun digital option especially for throwaway shots I would just like to share with friends or something. I think you're on to something.
Thank you! 😅
Good video. Makes me want a... XPro1 😅
Hahahaha 😅
I saw another youtuber passionately describe the Canon G7 Mark II as being quite filmlike because of its imperfections. I wonder how different it is then the g9.
I think the he G7 Mkii is more up to date but similar images
I have the Canon G15.
Love it!
Nice!
same settings are available on S95, too ;)
Great to know!
Can you also cook some decent b&w SOOC with this oldie?
Seems like you just need to kick up the contrast in sun light and it’s right there
Still very happy with Olympus MR-30 SZ
thanks for making this expensive now
I looked at the fuji x weekly site and the recipe you mentioned and I couldn't work out how you decided translate them to the G9 settings you used, any info on that would be great.
And just like that, the Canon G9's price was irrevocably inflated on the used market
One sold on eBay today (14th May) for £20 😂
@@GeorgeHolden for parts/spares or fully functional? Either way the seller is either an altruistic demigod or pretty pissed
@@RSA548 fully functional! Most working are going beneath £100 but there are some going for more through auctions - always sort by lowest price and 'auction ending soonest' to get good deals. You can see cheapest sold recently by filtering by 'sold items' and you'll see recent sold prices
awesome work georgey...looks decent on my canon s90 also....i didnt know fuji settings would work on the profiles..will take some shots in the future and tag u on Insta..much tanx
Thanks and yes please do!
Even the old Nikon 8400 takes very very "film like" shots. Try it and let me know!
Would love to try it!
Canon G9 is my first digital camera
but i can't find the battery now🤣
They're also annoyingly difficult to find spare!
I like what you were able to do but I think I still prefer the Fuji colors but it makes sense the Fuji camera is newer
Agreed it'll never replace a real fuji in every way
My old beloved G12 has a new lease of life. I can sell my Q2. **NOT**
Hahaha sell it all
I think pretty much CCD sensor camera can make filmlike image.
I have 2 Canon G12's and they're my favourite camera to shoot.
That's awesome!
I just bought a used olympus pen e-pm1, it's actually my first real camera besides a 110 I had as a child and disposables I used here and there. I would like to achieve the preset you have but do not know how to find the menus for these settings, where are they?
not even near?! or its my monitor?
Doubt monitor makes a difference, they're not identical!
1:40 + jpegs a bit warm but otherwise very nice 👍🏼
That's fair!
Looks great on my G10, thanks.
Awesome!
Hello, what is the Symbol With the Camera and the Triangel above and how to i fix the (?) to 1340?
G9 is not trash. This guy is crazy. 0:12 I’m triggered 😂
