- Highlights from the greatest show NOT on Earth but in the skies, AND one of the busiest Ted's Quick Climb Friday shows. These are the quick climbs from Ted's Quick Climb Friday show from the 23rd August 2024 with F-15E Strike Eagle and F-35A Lightning II executing Quick Climb departures.
So what is a Quick Climb?
Unlike the Typhoon which accelerates vertically after between 8 to 10 seconds from brakes to take off, aircraft such as the F15E or F35A will usually clear the whole runway maintaining an altitude anywhere between 40-100ft with speeds of around 320mph and then pull the aircraft vertically or near vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft's cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a "quick climb" more usual.
What is an Unrestricted Climb?
It is the same as a quick climb.
Why do they do Unrestricted climbs/PTOs/Quick climbs
There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. Quick climbs can also be used in a combat scenario for both offensive and defensive, either getting out of a base quick from attacks or scramble to intercept. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted Coningsby Squadron...ooh yeah!
RAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons; 492nd FS, 493rd FS, 494th FS and the recently reactivated 'Valkyries', the 495th Fighter Squadron. It may carry the title RAF but it is a USAF base. This is because the base was originally built for and operated by the Royal Air Force in 1940. The airfield started life out as decoy airfield (Q-site) to RAF Mildenhall, which is about 5.5 miles the way the backwards crow flies. RAF Mildenhall was an established bomber station built in 1934 and to protect it, Lakenheath was chosen to become a decoy, to take any attacks. However, things changes and it was decided that RAF Lakenheath would become a satellite station to Mildenhall.
Lakenheath was home to 20 OTU with Wellington Bombers, 149 Squadron with their Short Sterling Bombers who were also joined later by 199 Squadron. After WWII, and from 1948, it then became home to the USAF's 307th Bombardment Group and also the 2d Bombardment Group.
On the 15th January 1941, the US Army Air Corps activated the 48th Bombardment Group (Light). During WW2, the 492d, 493d and 494th Fighters Squadrons were trained and were significantly involved in the Normandy Landings, Operation Overlord and the Invasion of France. Their combat sorties involved bombings raids over bridges, railway lines and carried out reconnaissance missions. It was on the 10th July 1952, the Oklahoma Air National Guard 137th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France was redesignated as the 48th Fighter-Bomber Wing.
The Statue of Liberty was actually made near the base and the Mayor of the town gave a ceremonial name to the base as the "Statue of Liberty Wing". The 48th Fighter Wing is the only Wing in the USAF to have a number and a name!
It wasn't until 15th January 1960 that the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing made Lakenehath their new home. LR, LS and LT were the tail codes for the base with the F-100's but when they transitioned to the Phantom, a temporary tail code of LK was introduced until a few months later it changed once more to LN, which is active today.
In 1977 a fourth squadron joined Lakenheath's 48th, the 495th Tactical Fighter Squadron. They were known as the "Thundervarks" flying the F-111's. However, they deactivated in 1991. They also sported the green tail flash.
In 1991, The 48th Tactical Fighter Wing was redesignated as the 48th Fighter Wing. This included the 'Tactical' title being dropped on the squadrons too. The 495th disbanded with the retirement of the F-111 in that year but returned 30 years later in 2021 with the F-35A.

The Liberty Wing - 48th FW. Whether you're one of the Mad Hatters (Oii Oii Bolars!), Panthers, Grim Reapers or Valkyries, thank you for your service over here in the UK - Defenders of Liberty - Always ready to own the skies!
Oii oiii Ellesee 🤙🏼
Sending it, the Lakenheath way! What's fascinating is that the principle of take off is the same but how it looks & what it's capable of is different. Yes, perhaps an obvious deduction but... it's the sheer skill of the pilots, power & grace of the aircraft mixed with incredible engineering that makes it an absolute joy to watch. Thank you Ted. Thank you USAFE ❤
Oii Oii Margo, they sure know how to send it
Here to get my daily Fweep fix, and also to say a huge congrats on reaching the 70K mark. A wonderful, and thoroughly deserved achievement Nikos, Claire Spanner Crew, and not forgetting our leader, Ted
Oiii oiii Lorraine 🤙🏼glad you got your fweep fix. Thank you very much, can’t believe we’ve got to 70K ooohh yeah
There's nothing quite like the queuing in the Lakenheath bus-stops for departures but when you get so many great QCs what a bonus 😎
Great captures again Nikos ... Ted bringing the luck as always 🍀
Oiii oiii Matt 🤙🏼
In thrust we trust 🔥👊🏼

Oii oiii thank you very much
Magnificent quick climbs on these F-15E Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning II 😊🤩
Ooohhh yeah
awesome stuff, love it, amazing filming nikos
Oiii oiii thank you, glad you enjoyed
I love the part where you can see that yellow truck near the F15s. Totally shows the perspective on how large they actually are.
When you are watching them on their own they really don't seem that big.
But that showed the perspective perfectly.
Awesome!
Oohh yeah
Wow😊and congratulations on the 70k🎉
Awsome show nic & ted thank you for this cheered my morning up 👏👏
Oii oiii Alan 🤙🏼
Woo hoo. Swissy loves it 🇨🇭
So busy watching, I nearly forgot to smash the like button... Epic bit of filming. All i had to see until my TC fix today was a pair of Apaches 😁
Always plenty of action on this channel and congrats on 70K subscriptions.
You deserve more and will get them.
Oiii oiii Chris thanks man
Just never gets old! , does it..A pilot tied to a rocket, skillfully climbs to height in a hail of noise and reheats😮, mans technologcal advances can now put him faster and harder into the skies of Suffolk. What an Aircraft! Both F15 & F35 turning horizontal momentum into vertical velocity. The turnouts are as picturesque as the climb. Aileron Roll to flight level. Then there's that shot! Just no time too wait, they all follow suit. Even getting Teddy Bear ears.. ❤Masterful and forever training 48th Fighter Wing pilots on a free for all in a manner of speaking. The shots and zooming out match the action for an ace replay.. Just a normal day 🫡😉🫡
Oiii oiii Dan oooohhh yeah
The F35 climbs like no other, it is so fast. The more I see the F35 in non airshow levels you realize what a magnificent beast it is.
I totally agree, but it is pig ugly. For me, the most beautiful fighter today is still the Typhoon. The F22 is much better looking, but of course it’s a different aircraft with a different role.
Nice!
I was there it was brilliant
Wow!
That was just awesomeness 👍👍
Ooohh yeah
Off we go into the wild blue yonder.
Nice
Whoosh!
I am so pround to be an American!
This was awesome to watch I love the quick climb thank you Ted and Nikos
Ooohhh yeah thanks Julieann
great footage,i wonder if the F-35 Lightning 11 could go supersonic in a vertical climb like the EE Lightning was capable of doung ??
They are, but you can’t go supersonic over land anymore in the UK without a good reason and clearance.
@@TedConingsby i think the flight laws on supersonic flight changed after John Derry's supersonic crash at Farnborough airshow
Fweeeeep 😊
All of the F35’s have there RCS spoilers on .
Fat Amy is not particularly fast, but she is quick.
Oooh Yeaaah!
Ooohhh yeah
