Choosing to wear the Guac’s extra shirt for the episode that Hulk explodes is one of the most perfect coincidences I’ve seen lately
The MCU Hank Pym has never really lived up to the comics version, where he lives on the razor’s edge of sanity and occasionally crosses over into these types of chaotic evil. This was a really, REALLY cool episode for lots of reasons, but especially for how it introduced Hank’s darkness to a whole bunch of non-comics readers.
The fact that he's wearing the Yellowjacket suit is a huge nod to THAT Pym. I would love to see him develop like that in the movies but this was a nice taste

(Also, it's ironic since comic book Hank Pym is one of the founding members of the original Avengers, and here he's killing every single one of them)

Agh...so much telling and not showing in this episode...a real weakness in What If...? so far. Why wouldn't they *SHOW* that? They don't show anything at all about why Hank Pym is mad in the first place, it makes the ending have no weight at all. There was no lead-up

Hope was killed on a mission near Odesa, Ukraine. In our MCU, Black Widow was attacked by The Winter Solider outside Odesa, Ukraine on a mission. In this timeline, The Winter Soldier killed Hope Van Dyne.
Why was Hope on that mission though? What event caused her to be there in this show versus not being there in the movies?

They cheekily flat out tell you what the Nexus event was with the "It's all about Hope." line. Her decision to take after her mother early on incited a cascade of events leading to this outcome.

I loved Tom Hiddleston's line reading in this episode. I didn't care for the weird five o'clock shadow though. But seeing "Nick" kicking Hank's butt with magic was really satisfying. I just hope we get to see live action Loki doing that soon. Great dialogue and overall plot in this script, too.

This episode is a flip of Fury's Big Week. I really loved it because I never expected the perpetrator, and it showed that character in an entirely new light for me.

Thor basically lost all of his power, strength, magic, etc. So he's as vulnerable as a regular human (well strong human but still can die by arrow and bullet)
Very cool to officially retcon Ruffalo on screen with Liv Tyler (or at least the simulacrum thereof) as Hulk and Betty Ross.
Fun Fact: Mark Ruffalo was actually the director Louis Leterrier’s first choice for the role of Bruce Banner in this The Incredible Hulk.
It kind of blew up the entire Antman killing Thanos ideas that were floating around.
Plus HOW DARE you DISPARAGE Loki by saying he couldn’t take over the Earth in one day without the Avengers there?!
Also the images they show help to explain how he did it so easily, it’s not like it’s just Loki, he is commanding Asgard’s military. If earth was faced with a literal God descending from the sky possessing not only superior technology, but also magic, I think the world’s governments would submit quite quickly, and if not they would right after the first to refuse was reduced to a barren frozen waste.

The events of this episode (fury’s big week) take place in late May early June of 2010. In the main timeline Steve isn’t found until late 2011.
Or, Fury is even colder than the Capsicle. Kept him "on ice" until he needed him......

No. If that was the case he would have kept him on ice until the events of the avengers. Which he didn’t. Steve had already been awake for a while in the avengers
I guess Fury was able to find frozen Cap much earlier.
Guess that the events of this episode led Fury to give the search for Steve far higher priority, finding him markedly earlier as a result.

Actually after doing a bit more research it turns out this episode places the events of Fury's big week in late may to late june of 2011 instead of 2010 like i said. It turns out that it is very much up in the air weather fury's big week was in 2010 or 2011. There is evidence for both and i won't bore you with the telling you the evidence for both but this episode decides to go with the 2011 date. As shown by may 30th being a monday and Hope's 2009 mission in Odessa being stated as 2 years ago. ((i still personally think the 2010 date makes more sense for the main timeline but thats me)
Thus this means Fury found captain America probably just a few months early rather than a year like my original comment suggested.

Yeah, I agree it’s a really strong episode. While my number one is definitely last weeks, it was just so charming and unexpected, this and Captain Carter are tied for the next spot.

Remember that Thor lost his powers during his first visit to Earth, so there was nothing stopping him from getting killed that day besides Fury's curiosity. I also imagine Loki's saying he was ruling Earth isn't confirming an agreement, but rather an egotistic declaration. This was a really enjoyable episode! Loved how different the "what if" question was, and that the cause of the branch was the mystery of the episode. Really different format, but it just works.
I agree all the episodes so far really feel like they need a part 2 (e.g. we have no idea what happened to Gamora in the universe from episode 2), and my personal prediction is that they'll end up as part of a multi-versal plot near the end of the season, as a result of some Doctor Strange plot.
This was a really well done episode. Makes me want more Marvel Whodunnit's, but I'm content with this for now.
Was also nice to see Manassas, as i'm also originally from Northern Virginia. So nice to see us represented
Ghost was also a shield agent at this time, she could’ve been recruited into the avengers as the backup
Other potential recruits could be Black Panther, Spider-Man, the Ancient One, Wong, and Dr. Strange.

I love how this episode is basically an alternate version of the "Fury's Big Week" limited series comic book that was released in 2012.
Loki rolled Nat 20s for diplomacy, but he also definitely had a bonus because of his high charisma wether it applies or not because it’s Tom Hiddleston.

@TheJoeGreene Were you under the impression that this particular clue was supposed to come earlier in the story? From my experience, this traditionally cheesy trope comes later in the story because it IS just a pun.

Even tho this wasn’t on the level of Star Lord T’Challa (IMO) it was still really cool and fun to watch. Trying to piece together who the murderer was was really fun. It wasn’t until Black Widow’s death that I finally figured out it was most likely Ant-Man but then it turned out to be Yellowjacket Hank Pym and I was like yo! I kinda figured it out but there’s still a twist! Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻

A lot of "What If...?" stories have a darker, unresolved ending so it's possible that this is just the end of this story but I'd definitely like to see a different group of Avengers take on Loki.
So far we have the two Caps (America and Marvel) so.. that is pretty good start.. maybe in this universe T'challa comes out into the world early because he is aware that alien space vikings would probably find Wakanda sooner than later?
@@BaconNuke Possibly! They’d also definitely have Rhodey, since he’d already taken the Mark-2 suit before Tony and Fury had their chat at the donut restaurant, and I could also see Sif leaving Loki and taking over Thor’s role as the Asgardian on the team.

@@BaconNuke Yeah, I think it could potentially be either Steve or Jane who ends up earning Mjolnir and obtaining those powers in that timeline, since we know Steve (at the very least) becomes worthy eventually, and Jane is apparently gonna do something along those lines in Love & Thunder. 🤔
Hope got her suit after Hank saw Scott’s progression. If Hope has already been given the WASP suit and perished, it’s safe to assume there was no Scott.
I don't think Hope had the suit yet when she became a SHIELD agent.
Remember that Hope had a tenuous relationship with Hank because of what happened to Janet, before they met in the first Ant-Man film. Hope basically had no choice but to ask help from his father in order to stop Darren Cross, but that didn't mean she forgave him yet. It was only after Hank explained what happened to Janet that she was able to forgive him, and how he was able to show her the WASP suit at the end of the first film.
By comparison, I'm assuming that in this timeline, it was Fury who told Hope what really happened to Janet and not Hank, and that would have cemented Hope's "hatred" to her father, and could be one of the reasons why she decided to join SHIELD.
So, by that logic, Hope was just Agent Van Dyne when she met the Winter Soldier in Odessa, and a normal agent, no matter how skilled, wouldn't stand a chance against a brainwashed super assassin. If she did have the WASP suit, she could have survived.
@@jeffquinz2118 Good explanation, but that does mean the original Ant-Man suit may still be around to be stolen, confiscated, discovered, etc. So there might be an Ant-Man to oppose Loki.

Thor had his powers taken away at this point from his first movie, so a normal arrow probably could take him down.
When the What If?… is Hank Pym goes off the deep end and full Bane against Nick Fury:
“When the Avengers are… ashes, you’ll have my permission to die.”

What becomes of Killian and Extremis with no Tony Stark to enact vengeance on? Also Doctor Strange should still be there
I would say no to Black Panther. King T'Chaka would be The Black Panther at this time and he's an isolationist. With Emperor Loki in power, I would think T'Chaka would double down on keeping Wakanda hidden.
I question Spider-Man. First off, given the time frame, he probably doesn't have his powers yet. Or if he does, he just got them. But moreover, I question whether Peter would even become Spider-Man in this timeline. Remember, Norman Osborne, in the MCU, creates the Irradiated Spider during his attempts to find a cure for his disease and the disease that would later ravage his son, Harry. Assuming Norman Osborne is a villain in the MCU like everywhere else (we don't know because we only see him on his deathbed), it's not a stretch to see Norman Osborne prostrating himself to Loki, begging him to cure this disease on himself and Harry. I could actually see Loki agreeing for blind obedience which, let's be honest, Norman would be happy to give. So if this were to happen, there would be no Irradiated Spider because both Norman and Harry would be cured due to Asgardian Magic/Tech/Medicine. So yeah, depending on the direction they went with this, there would, potentially, be no Spider-Man.
I also have to wonder how effective War Machine would be without the improvements Tony would make as time went on. Also, I'm not entirely convinced Rhodey would wear the armor without Tony.
Lady Sif, I think, would be on the fence. One one hand, she doesn't really like Loki. On the other hand, Thor was killed by a Human. Somehow, I don't think Lady Sif would really care about the Humans on Earth given those circumstances.
@@Ghost-Mom Fury would be more likely to contract the aide of The Ancient One over Doctor Strange. If he even exists at all, he would be considerably weaker and, certainly NOT The Sorcerer Supreme. One would assume that with Emperor Loki having taken over Earth, the Sorcerers would have more pressing matters to deal with than the fact that The Ancient One has been leeching power from Dormammu. I believe The Ancient One would still be alive and, thus, Strange, if he exists, wouldn't have had to raise his power quickly, nor would The Ancient One allow it. However, as I have alluded to, I'm not so sure Dr. Strange, the Sorcerer, would exist in this timeline because his accident and training took place after The Invasion of New York. An invasion that never happened in this timeline. So we can't say for certain that Strange's accident would have even happened.
It was wild to see bits of several early MCU films combined together!

Great vid, and as to how Loki took over: In the thor movie, Thor is found by friends and reveals the deception before getting back his power, but since he died before that, it was never exposed. So Loki was still in power because Odin was in the Odin sleep, and with Thor's death as justification and being the ruler of Asgard now, Loki had the full power of Asgard at his back, and without the avengers, earth stood little chance. That's just my interpretation, I could be wrong, but that's my reasoning.

Hulk-Goo splashing all the soldiers and General Ross! She-Hulk was created by a blood transfusion and the whole storyline of the first MCU Hulk movie was about getting some of that blood. A lot can be done with that.
What about Winter Soldier? Wouldn't he still exist since Steve existed in this episode? Not sure if Bucky would still be controlled but he is a possibility. Also not sure if Black Panther would be known at this point either.
He definitely still exists, as he's the one who assassinated Hope Van Dyme (Odessa) and indirectly caused all of this.
No comment on how EARTH’s MIGHTIEST, were taken down by EARTH’s MITE-IEST...?? also, vindication for a long under-rated character; plus the THANOS-thing would TOTALLY have worked...it’s now CANNON...

I honestly didn’t think that would be who the killer was. I was very surprised. Man, this show is awesome….
I suppose you could argue that Hulk's death was a battle between his practically indestructable tissue and the inexorable increase in blood pressure cause by his enlarging heart, eventually causing his internal structure to completely vaporize. But in that case I think the explosion would have been more like a Fuel/Air bomb and everyone on campus would have been killed by the overpressure.
Plus the fact there could be gamma radiation fallout

There still could be Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Spiderman, Shang Chi and even the Guardians of the Galaxy in this universe.
T'Chaka doesn't care about the rest of the planet so they're still screwed, until Erik visits them and T'Challa becomes Black Panther I guess?
Spidey is an infant and so is Shang, his story takes place in 2023+, he would be like 10 here. The Guardians wouldn't really have a reason to visit Earth.
So I guess it's all up to Doctor Strange, Carol and Steve in a few years.

This episode had me sitting there trying to be a sleuth like Nancy Drew for a full half hour, trying to figure out who done it haha. I was half convinced it was some kinda ghost at one point lol. This episode was a trippy ride and it made me appreciate the Avengers even more man cause like...One thing and they all coulda been gone. But like Hulk exploding...is gonna give me nightmares.
All in all...great episode. Loving What if... so far. Marvel is Awesome as always.
