According to the International Draeseke Society, Draeseke's Academic Festival Overture is a popular work of its time, at least one that deserves to be freed from the shadow of oblivion!
The reason for its creation is as obscure as the whereabouts of the score; it may have been destroyed in Dresden during wartime. Fortunately, the complete set of parts was preserved, making it possible to combine them into a new complete edition of the score (IMSLP).
This digital listening offer would like to whet the appetite for a real revival, because"... in Draeseke's freshly, jaunty, and wine-filled overture, the studential, fellowship spirit comes to the fore consistently and almost belies the masterful thematic work."
