Contrary to its fairytale-like name, Draeseke's "Fairy Magic" does not belong to program music, so it does not follow extra-musically pre-planned sequences or atmospheric pictures, nor does it intend to illustrate literary content.
Instead, the composer himself describes the work in his memoirs (year 1911) as a concert piece and occasional composition, initially probably for harp solo, which he he would like to transform into an orchestral piece and then perhaps give it the name "Fairy Magic".
Even after this change, Draeseke seems to have left the completion date in the manuscript at the original Dec 22, 1910.
