As a German I feel nothing describes the German soul better than this masterpiece. It is often seen as an opera for children but I think it is for all ages with an open heart for fairytales and beautiful and romantic stories. And this is what Germans actually are at the bottom of our hearts. Often we are considered as good engineers and organizers, but lack humor and emotion. Be assured this is a cliché and only half the story. The truth is that Germans love myths, fantasy and fairytales, just like you 🧙♀️☺️
My mother bought me the record of this opera when I was a child and I played it over and over again on my little turntable. The music has always stayed with me. I sat here and cried while I watched it now at 59 years old, remembering those childhood days. Music is magic.
@@sebashengst31 This is the one I had. They sing in English, but it's well done. www.discogs.com/Engelbert-Humperdinck-Hansel-and-Gretel/release/6741414
I love this brings back memories of my primary and secondary high school days, I'd study on Sundays in my room listening to black metal and anarcho punk and when finished would go to the living room where my mom would listen to this and we'd prepare dinner together and bake cakes.. Good old times
When Hansel and Gretel fall asleep in the forest and are visited by the fourteen angels who come to protect them, the opera becomes transcendental. And the camera catching the wide eyes of the children in the audience who are viewing this luminous scene, adds to the moment's magical spell. This is an absolutely incredible staging of the opera. (the passage begins at 50:01 and finishes at 1:03)
+wskfan Yes, an interesting small clip there of the Finale to H&G as done by real children as opposed to adults. It looks far better but the Humperdinck opera is on a Wagnerian level and so requires that it be done by adults, not children. H&G is mostly done very badly by almost everyone, but the Solti version is done quite well. Thanks for the tip.
Yes, H&G is Grand Romantic Opera on Wagnerian level at its best. Beside one male voice you need six (!) different female voices. (A shame if directors replace the witch by tenor!) All of them have to be great professional opera singers! At video above we have luck to get all this opera needs and deserved including top conductor of top orchestra.
I've been looking for this for years. Since I first viewed it on Public Television so long ago. I recall weeping when observing the wide-eyed wonder on the faces of the small children. Beautifully sung and orchestrated. The angels descending over Hansel and Gretel absolutely breathtaking.
Humperdinck's masterpiece is in my view is in the top ten operas ever written. The closest in style would have to be Sondheim's "Into the woods". I remember seeing this stage at school in Form 1 and it settled in my brain straight away. It also encourage me to be a composer (like my father), and to begin composing opera's when I turned fifty. I am now sixty and have worked on forty operas. But above all things - if I could write music as wonderful as this I would be the luckiest man living my childhood dreams.
You and me both, this is the opera that has inspired me on so many levels, not just to write like this but also to write a whole series of musicals based on each fairy tale in this sort of style, I even wrote a red riding hood song in the style of Schubert

I visit this film often. When people ask me what my favorite music is, I say it's a two-way tie. Mozart's Requiem, and Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel. The angel sequence (called the Dream Pantomime) is so humanely beautiful and sublime that it ranks as one of the greatest achievements in musical composition ever. That is my opinion of course. But in all the years I've listened to classical music, that opinion has never wavered. It leaves me choked up, staggered and amazed, profoundly moved, often close to tears. Thanks Humperdinck!

What I like about this opera is that the witch can be sung by both a female or male and it still has the same effect. Both versions are phenomenal in my opinion. No transposition needed either, same key different octave. I know this because I was in a production (as a ginger bread child obviously😉) and our witch was sung by a man
Some are real German folk songs (e.g. "Suse, liebe Suse"), some are created at this opera (e.g. "Abendsegen"). It's Humperdinck's musical genius we aren't really able to distinguish and some, like "Abendsegen", became popular as 'new' folk songs.
That's a wonderful performance of a wonderful masterpiece, bravo. That was my favourite piece (alongside with "La Boheme") I had pleasure to conduct while I was working in the opera :)
@1:21:20 Not bad, Mrs. Jurinac, not bad at all (this is an understatement :) ). In general though, wow, what an amazing cast - and how nice to catch the VPO on one of their few-and-far-between inspired days ;)
Sena Jurinac is a great witch. Nevertheless Christa Ludwig is the all-time star at this role. Listen her at audio studio record with Helen Donath (Gretel), Anna Moffo (Haensel), Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Vater), Charlotte Berthold (Mutter), Arleen Auger (Sandmaennchen), Lucia Popp (Taumaennchen), Toelzer Knabenchor, Muenchner Rundfunkorchester, Kurt Eichhorn (Dirigent)
saw it many times in Staatsoper with Fassbaender-Popp and I think Janowitz, maybe it was Waltraud Meier. Amazing production. 1986-1991. Volksoper version as well, but Staatsoper was preferred house. Staatsoper magic is the best magic in world except when the Hollander's boat flew off and Senta bounced back up. Not so many mishaps.

No transposition needed either, same key different octave. I know this because I was in a production (as a ginger bread child obviously😉) and our witch was sung by a man

I don't care to sound superficial, but my favourite part of this movie has always been 19:59 XD
This is such beautiful music
The songs are amazing, I love them so much!🍦🍩🍨🍭🍫🍰🐈
Some are real German folk songs (e.g. "Suse, liebe Suse"), some are created at this opera (e.g. "Abendsegen"). It's Humperdinck's musical genius we aren't really able to distinguish and some, like "Abendsegen", became popular as 'new' folk songs.
i love that opera... ich liebe diese oper!
tebaldo able hai ragione, è veramente bello

Made my afternoon. Thanks so much!
Que hermosa música y que bellas voces. Nostálgico el cuento. Mi padre me lo contaba y yo a mi hijo. Linda producción .
Look at all those cute little German children.
filmed in vienna- they're austrian children not german.

The Austrian and German race is really similar, nearly identical.
@@raymondgood2359Austrians are ethnic germans
das ist wunderschön
Wow! Thank you for uploading this!
stirs emotions of grandeur then I wake up!
Nice to see this film online. I have worked on the special effects of making the Witch fly at the time.....
Albert Maly-Motta so impressive. what a fantastic production to take part in! good work!
saw it many times in Staatsoper with Fassbaender-Popp and I think Janowitz, maybe it was Waltraud Meier. Amazing production. 1986-1991. Volksoper version as well, but Staatsoper was preferred house. Staatsoper magic is the best magic in world except when the Hollander's boat flew off and Senta bounced back up. Not so many mishaps.
A lovely performance!!!
WUNDERBAR!!!!!!
