      Versailles is magnifique! However it was, for the most part a gold encrusted prison to keep the nobility under control and in debt to Louis XIV. You could be a Duc or Comte but you had to live at Versailles and hire commoners to manage your estates. As a noble it was against the law for you to work, so you borrow heavily from the king to pay for the ostentatious costumes you had to wear and state you kept. Because of the Frond, a war between factions, during the minority of Louis XIV's reign, the king when he matured was bent on abandoning Paris and crushing the factions. It worked but the cost was the eventual revolution that took place 74 years after he died. I love visiting Versailles right before closing. The crowds are gone, the place is silent, it is a big beautiful and sad building. I highly recommend seeing any opera at the royal opera or any performance after hours.

      These type of events are happing quite a lot in the UK actually. I didn't realise it until recently myself, like most things it depends on knowing the network. If you start by googling a generic term like 'Regency ball' you will find several going on throughout the year - lots of clips on RUclips too!

But having been an 18th century re-eanctor, and and 17th century re-enactor, and also having worked for the National Trust, I've kind of gotten used to the attitudes of heritage sites.
      When I was in an 18th century society group, we tried to get in Audley end house. They agreed to have us.......but we were to go in the stable block and had to be out at closing time. We told them to stuff it.

      Willem de Fesch I am agree with you. It supposed to be 17th and 18th century period but you see all kind but some don’t even much any of the Versailles period. They should be a little more strict with the dress code protocol. Before I attended I thought was going to be late 17th century baroque style and early 18th century rococo style since that was Versailles golden age. Although seems that most people mostly like the Marie Antoinette period since I guess is what most people relate Versailles due to her tragic death, specially when people are not really familiar with Versailles history.

    • @MichelSarmento
      @MichelSarmento  2 года назад +1

      Agree with you. It should be definitely a more strict dress code. The theme of the night was The Roi Soleil but the general dress code, it is just period costumes.
      How most people associated Versailles with Marie Antoinette most choose XVIII century Fashion but besides that some costumes were definitely as you said, poorly made or not even from the Versailles period.

      @@MichelSarmento even worse!!! The king sun!!! What a wasted opportunity to dress properly. I hope in the future the dress code gets more strict. And yes most people associate Versailles with Marie Antoinette but they don’t even dressed how the queen used to dress!!! I saw some late medieval dresses in your video, and others that look out of a costume fair. Again, very disappointed at the dress code but I’m sure there was people that really did an effort to fit the theme and the vibe of Versailles!

    • @MichelSarmento
      @MichelSarmento  3 года назад +13

      The event specified only period costumes from the 17th to 18th century basically from the the reign of the founder Louis XIV to its end of the French monarchy with Louis the XVI.
      I personally would like they specific to dress more accordingly to an specific era so everyone will look in a pattern but I guess they prefer to give people the choice as long they respect the period costume code.
      I chose Louis the XIV because it was the most glorious time of Versailles.

    I can't imagine living back then. The stink must have been unbearable. No one bathed with any regularity. Versailles was freezing during the winter and hotter than Hell's front porch in the summer. Those ball rooms packed with people and lit with thousands of candles. It's a wonder people didn't faint. And there was virtually no plumbing in the place. People used to look for dark corners of hallways to relieve themselves. The clothes and music were nice. But I will stick to my own century thank you. I like being alive and still in possession of most of my teeth at age 55 as well as enjoying the company of other people who shower daily. None of which was likely in the 17th century.

      The chimney's were too short too. Louis rejected the original chimney plans since he thought they broke up the symmetry too much. So the fire places were smokey affairs. Of course Louis also hated to have closed windows. He had them open most of the time even in winter.

      @wholeNwon 2 года назад

      @@sgregg5257 I don't remember which of the many architects who worked on the palace offered the King a "solution" of the frieze above the actual roof level to permit better chimney draw while still concealing them from ground view. Unfortunately it interrupted the air flow too much and was only partially effective. With the Fronde always in mind, Louis commented that his architects and others didn't understand the true purpose of Versailles.
      Louis XVI embraced a design by Franklin that worked better.

    • @wholeNwon

      True. Yet, they viewed themselves as clean. I have forgotten which lady was offered the high honor of riding with the King in his coach but refused because he stank so badly. We romanticize them too much. They were filthy and the stench in the palace must have been horrible. In attempting to extract one of his teeth, the "dentist" tore the King's palate resulting in a permanent defect that plagued the rest of his life. Louis XV survived childhood only be having been shielded from the court physicians by his mother. Tough times even at the top. But we shouldn't forget that even U.S. Presidents in the recent past have had very bad medical care.
      And a Pope died from neglected DVT.
