  • Finnish Folk Song with ethereal sounds of kantele and voice. Merja Soria's Melkutus was featured in the National Geographic Television’s program “Beyond the Movie: Lord of The Rings”. This song features the national instrument of Finland, the 5-string kantele.
Finnish folk poetry tells that when the first kantele was played for the first time, the sound was so beautiful that all living things started to cry. When the tears touched the water of the ocean, they turned to pearls.
Melkutus is a traditional Finnish song from Merja Soria's album Arctic Silence.
Merja Soria, vocals and 5-string kantele

Finally!! I have been searching this song for 22 years or maybe more. This song captivated me after the first time I heard it in a National Geographic documentary about Lord of The Rings. Thanks for uploading it and thanks Shazam app:) Such a beautiful melody, and such a pure voice!

I heard this in a documentary about Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings a long time ago. It was played as background vocals during the segment about Finland and the kalevala, which was what inspired most of Tolkien's Middle Earth writings.

@@RA-hg7lx I heard it in a National Geographic special about Lord of the Rings. I think it was from around 2003 or 2004. I used to have the dvd.

There was this Finnish lady who came to India around 2006 or 2007 when I was a kid and taught us this song and the instrument Kantele too!! I vaguely remembered the song and was trying to find it. I have found it today!!!

    Lyrics:
    Miepä tanssin melkutusta
    kultani kanssa kappia.
    Ei oo siun rinnassas
    niin kiiltäviä nappia.

I first heard Värttinä's cheery and lively version of this song and then I heard this in the Lord of the Rings documentary. I love them both.

Same. It was in the National Geographic documentary about the making of Lord of the Rings. It was played during the segment about Finland and the Kalevala. I loved it the first time I heard it and had been looking for it for years. So happy I found it.

Thank you for posting Merja. I first heard this as that short snippet of background music on the National Geographic special many years ago. This is the song that started my journey into exploring the rich abundance of Nordic folk music.

netwitch56 You are most welcome. It was this very song that piqued my interest to explore more - leading me to create a YT account back in 2006. I suppose I followed Väinämöinen's path. It was the first sounds of the kantele that created the awakening. :-)

What is the song talking about?

    • @axu8392
      @axu8392 5 лет назад +15

The Finnish in the song is quite old-fashioned, but I've understood it's a song about the singer dancing with her loved one. She also tells you her husband(?) has far shinier buttons than you on his shirt.
... the lyrics in Finnish folk music are somewhat ambiguous, usually.

    Old finish and dialectical sentences.
    1) I am in a little dance with my lover deep emotionally and close ( her head is on the chest of her lover)
    2) There is no such golden shining button on your chest (probably chest means on his shirt, and the golden button is her head with blond hair)
