- Sing to me, Sing to the others, Sing to the world! Because if you stop singing, you heart will become too old, too soon!
For as long as I can remember, my dad used to sing this song to me. It is one of my first memories of him and it is also the last one. During the last weeks of his life it was my turn to sing this song to him!
During the difficult transitions in my life I always come back to this song. It reminds me to keep moving forward; maybe limping a bit - but still singing!

Composed by Oskar Merikanto
Lyrics by J.H.Erkko
Translation Merja Soria
i remember my Finnish grandmother and her twin sister singing this to me as a baby ❤❤❤
lyrics/
laula tyttö sinisilmä,
punaposki, ruususuu,
istu tuohon polvelleni,
siin' on sulle laulupuu.
Laula mulle, laula muille,
maailmalle laulele,
ettei ennen aikojansa
sydämemme vanhene.
Laula tyttö, ettei surra
otsaa ryppyiseksi saa,
ettei murhe mieltä murra,
toivo päivät kirkastaa.
I like how the lyrics travel down then up again.
Fun fact: Quenya, one of Tolkien's Elvish languages, was based off of Finnish
Someone asked for a translation and I didn't see one already... notes that don't translate at the end, because why not? Even though none of them really matter for the meaning.
Sing blue-eyed* girl,
red-cheeked, rosy-mouthed,
sit there on my knee,
there's a singing tree for you.
Sing to me, sing to others,
sing** to the world,
so that before our time,
our hearts won't grow old.
Sing girl, so that we won't grieve***,
get (our) foreheads wrinkled,
so that grief**** won't break minds,
hope brightens***** the days.
*also means naive or gullible
**but with a more playful and casual form of the verb than the previous instances
***or won't be sad
****or sadness
***** lit. clears
Oh those look kinda silly. If anyone knows how to mark footnotes in youtube comments that would make those a lot more readable...
thank you
I have a similar story in regards to this song with my aunt - I remember as a child baking with her while the this song played on a record in the background, it's one of the fondest memories I have with her, and I miss her dearly
Do you have russian roots?
@@ilves2761yes, and I spent summers there as a kid! My family is from Russia, near the finnish border.
@@sakutarokun323 Cool! I have live my whole life in Finlands North Karelia, about 15 kilometres from the Russian border :)
Kiva laulu. Missä tämä kuva on otetty?
Absolutely lovely! Such a Nice melody and pretty voice.
Thank you so much:)
Beautiful song. I don't necessarily need to know Finnish to enjoy your music.
😍 Beautiful!
Kiitos sinulle, Merja, kauniista ja elämän makuisesta musiikista.
Your chanel is a delight. I love these songs. And your voice is absolutely beautiful. One of the best things I've stumbled onto on RUclips. And I barely know any words in Finnish and I don't understand the songs message, but they seem very positive and calming. I sing them on my way to exams, and it really does help. Much thanks from America!
I second this!
Hienoa työtä!
Ни слова не понятно , но такое ощущение, что что-то родное и близкое 🙂❤
Im From Turkey I Love You merja
I Love You Finland 💜💜💜❤❤❤❤
Hello, there was a radio broadcasting few weeks ago in my country where a Slovak woman married to a Finn talked about Finnish culture etc. Then came this song and my first thought was I have to find out what song it is, because it sounds enchanting. I'm happy I found it, thank you for your beautiful singing.
Btw, could someone translate the whole song, please?
Beautiful 👏👏👏
Beautiful ❤
It's beautifull! Best wishes from Russia.
Merja voitko laulaa meidän iloks lisää lauluja?
Kiitos ! Kaunis laulu.
Thank you for sharing this. Time to start singing again ❤
I hope that I get to hear you and your Dad sing together in the next world. Yes, unselfish love of others keeps our hearts always young. Jim Thomas
Is there a way to get the lyrics/translation to this song?
It's probably not relevant now, and I can't translate it, but here's the lyrics:
Laula tyttö, sinisilmä
Puhunaposki, ruususuu
Istu tuohon polvehelleni
Siin' on sulle laulupuu
Laula mulle, laula muille
Maailmahelle laulele
Ettei ennen aikojansa
Sydänmehemme vanhene
Laula, tyttö ettehei surra
Ohotsaa ryppyiseksi saa
Ettei murhe mieltähä muhurra
Toivoho päivähät kirkastaa
Laula mulle, laula muille
Maailmahelle laulele
Ettei ennen aikojansa
Sydänmehemme vanhene
Laula tyttö, sinisilmä
Puhunaposki, ruususuu
Istu tuohon polvehelleni
Siin' on sulle laulupuu
If you haven´t tried to translate those lyrics yet, then I will try to translate it with my poor English. (I´m from Finland)
I will try to translate them from the song, because it´s easier to me, because in those lyrics below there is some words that are written incorrectly, so I will write them correctly.
Sing girl, blue eyes (the girl who is asked to sing has blue eyes.)
red cheeks, rose lips (she also has red cheeks and rose lips, this is how we describe our Finnish little girls)
Sit on my knee
there is song tree for you.
Sing to me, sing to others
Sing to the world
So that before the time
our hearts won´t age.
Sing girl so you won´t mourn
(ohotsaa, it´s actually otsaa) so your forehead won´t get wrinkles
So sorrow won´t break your mind (muhurra, it´s actually murra)
(Toivo päivän kirkastaa) Hope will brighten the day.
Sing to me, sing to others
Sing to the world
So that before the time
our hearts won´t age.
Sing girl, blue eyes
red cheeks, rose lips
Sit on my knee
there is song tree for you.
