Insightful not so much as an accurate chronicling of events, but offers a profile of the persons directly involved and the tangential individuals, but their backgrounds and motivations. Thank you.

My father came from North Longford, not far from Arvagh. He was born in 1898 so in 1920 he would have been 22 years old. He emigrated to the US in 1927 and settled in New York. I was born there 20 years later. He died when I was 20 and only once, in all those 20 years, did he ever mention anything about his experience from this time. His brothers and sisters died childless not long after he did and I only ever made one adult trip to Longford, so there are no longer any family members I can ask. I knew a great deal about the war from my mother's perspective. She came from West Cork. But I had no idea that Longford, and especially North Longford, was such a cockpit of the conflict. Thank you for opening my eyes. I suspect he may have been one of those "rank and file" people you mentioned, though it would take some research to prove it. But, now I have something to consider and research.
