These burnings were a strange part of the era - My Great Grandfather was called The Man Who Burned Calafenish ( though it really didn't burn at least not much) started with someone shooting at his car. He piled out with some Free State soldiers demanding answers and things got rowdy..

When we see what's happening in Ireland now currupt political parties and Ireland being handed over to the migration army, Irish people give up their own lives for nothing, what a total waste Of hero's lives. There is no pride in the Irish people these days, the shame of it is too much to bare.

Rewriting history to suit an expansionist narrative, justifying proxy incursions, ethnic cleansing and violent activities into other countries, is not uncommon. Even on our own doorstep, the Republic of Ireland have rewritten, not only their history, but also inserted their fictionalised version of history into their constitution and national anthem. "A Nation Once Again" or “reunification” are fictional, concepts, nonsense statements, as there was never a sovereign Southern Irish government that governed Ulster, now called Northern Ireland. Ulster or Britain have been the only two historical rulers of Ulster. Ulster was independent kingdom before being subdued and ruled by the British, conquered centuries after our Southern Irish neighbours. “A Nation Once Again” for Ulster, now called Northern Ireland, would be independence, not unification, as claimed by the Republic of Ireland at every opportunity.

On a visit home, I’m from Belfast, we stayed around Longford and it was the Longford’s paper’s anniversary. It was interesting to read after the treaty about how good it was to see all the young men who had been on the run were now at dances, just doing what young men do and who weeks before were checking how many belles they had left.

I'm not sure that Colonel Dyer was from Mayo as stated here in this video. I understand that he was born in the Punjab while it was under British rule. With regard to the massacre at Amritsar there is often a conflation between the similar sounding names of Colonel Dyer and his superior Sir Michael O'Dwyer, a British civil servant who was born in Tipperary. Sir Michael was assassinated by being shot twice and he died instantly in 1940 at a book signing in London by a Sikh avenging the infamous massacre. The scurrilous Indian perpetrator was duly hanged.

Informative and well presented. Thank you. From the research I’ve done on the surname Mimnagh, which is almost exclusively from Lietrim-Longford, it means “ Munster man “ ie someone from the province of Munster, south west Ireland. Mimnagh or Mimnugh, is a sobriquet ( a descriptive word for a place or name that becomes more common than the original name) the original name being Kennedy or Cennetig.

Many years ago,I took my Family on an English farm chalet holiday.. The farm looked a little run down. I chatted to the Farmer and his wife and discovered thst she had to go back to teaching to support her Husband who had fallen on hard times because the Foot and mouth epidemic had wiped out all his stock. He even had to pay for getting all his sheep sent to Anglesey abattoir. His Landlord was tbe Duke of Northumberland who was Landlord to 92 tenant farmers.. The farmer explained that the farmers got organised and approached the Duke to forgo the rent because times were so difficult. The Duke after some. deliberation decided to reduce tbe rents by 10%, which was almost an insult..Incidentally, he told me that he was only the 3rd generation family tennant, The previous family had been evicted before his Grandfather moved in.. Then he asked me if we had any Landlords and I explained that we were rather harsh on them. How do you mean,??? he asked We shot a few of them and we invented a new word for the dictionary.. "Boycott" Nothing to do with the IRA, just a few locals would get together and assassinate the problem. Their passage and fares to America were organised in advance. Especially if the problem Landlord was fond of the young girls.. There are monuments to such groups scattered over Ireland. My own Great grandfather was evicted from his family farm and walked with his son to Lifford and Strabane where he died of starvation. My grandfather was taken into a boys home where he was very well looked after. He kept same job for 40 years. His first wife died of consumption and my father was the eldest son of his second marriage.. Arlingham the poet, put his first cousin on a coffin ship with 6 shifts and 2 shillings. Bound for Australia. He could have easily cared for her but there were some really mean selfish basturds about in those days, and Arlingham was one of them.
