I found a very slight difference in the texture of the Zeta vs Epsilon..the epsilon feels a bit smoother but it also shows more grain when using color pencils.
The Zeta pages are nice and thick and will hold up to lots of pressure when coloring, as well as take wet mediums better as long as not too wet. The Beta and Delta are almost too coarse for fine liners and color pencil as the tooth is deep and large and a lot of white shows through, but work well with watercolor as you said.
Thank you! You answered every question that I have in my mind. Very helpful and amazing drawings. :)
Thanks!
Hi Teoh I finally got the beta stilman and birn sketch book and it’s great quality and the paper holds a lot of water washes thank you for this review before I bought it ,
Really well-done review! Thank you!
thank you! your review is very helpful.
+Leon Berg Thanks
thank u friend
Just bought 2 Zeta softcover sketchbooks, the paper quality is great. However, the binding on the books is disappointing in the sense that the pages between signatures are glued at the base. Opening the book flat caused the glue to tear apart the base of the two pages leaving behind an ugly, rough gutter. Pretty sad the books turned out this way, which I have not experienced in the other sketchbooks I am using even though there are more signatures and pages.
Some pages are like that while others are fine. I tend not to draw across the gutter of the affected pages.
Some pages are better than the rest, but I couldn't stop staring at the ugly gutters of the affected pages. OCD much, I guess.
I really love your work in this sketchbook! :) do you have any videos on how to sketch using markers?
+Payal Mathur Drawing uses the same concept regardless of material. If you're a beginner, I recommend the book 'Keys to Drawing' www.parkablogs.com/content/book-review-keys-drawing
I ordered soft cover zeta for now but will try Beta next.
Beta has more texture. It is better for paint medium
I have that sketchbook though I haven't used it yet. I have it in 9 x 12inch size because I'll do out door sketching and also some things from my which are going to be pretty large. Anyways, it's great to see that bleed through and show through are very faint. Thanks for the review. :-D
+James Barton Thanks for your comment :-)
Your sketches are very good. I love your style.
bekahjan - The Vintage Dreamer Thanks!
i personally prefer a smooth surface for my watercolor, so should I still look for the toothier paper? thinking of just getting this version instead, since it might remind me of hot press paper
Smooth paper is generally better for ink or markers. If you want to use watercolor, then it's better to get hotpress watercolor paper because they are treated to handle watercolour better. Watercolours will look lovely on them.
I like smooth surface for watercolor too haha!
I have just found out about your channel recently, very helpful. Would you mind recommending me a sketchbook suitable for markers and pen, besides the ones from Stillman and Birn series
Not sure about that. Alcohol markers typically bleed through the pages so it is best to place a piece of paper behind the page you draw on. Markers work better on smooth surface paper
What sketchbook would you recommend for watercolors, pen & ink, and graphite? I'm stuck on what to get.
Maybe the Global Art Materials watercolour journal.
Which series of the sketchbooks would be more suitable if I wanna use watercolours, copic and colourpencils as the mediums?
+artgapelove Since you want to use markers, that means you need thicker paper so that the marker will not bleed onto the next page. The sketchbooks with thicker paper (270gsm) would be Beta, Delta and Zeta.
Zeta is a bit too smooth for watercolour and I feel that water does not absorb well.
So my recommendation will be either Beta or Delta. Their only difference is the colour of the paper. Beta is white, and Delta is slight creamy.
You can search for reviews of those sketchbooks on my blog and see some sample drawings, watercolour sketches on the paper.
Thank you so much, you're such a great help!
Which is your favorite sketchbook for watercolor?
The one from Global Art Materials and Khadi Papers

8½" × 5½" - is this A5? I was thinking of buying but am not sure if this is A5 size
artgapelove That's A5.
Which one for gouache?
You can use any. The sketchbooks with thicker paper are probably more suitable. Beta, Delta
That's Copic on those pages?? Wow, There is no bleed through... That is awesome. Good bye Moleskine. Hello Stillman and Birn!
WhaleTank Almost no bleed through.
Teoh Yi Chie I can live with that
