Very detailed video. I adore you. You've made watercolor painting very interesting and I feel I have enough knowledge to do a good job. Thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge.
I'm learning how to draw now. I have a strong desire so I know I will be able to do it. You make great videos, you don't have useless chatter, you keep my attention.
Thank you so much for this review! Planning to buy watercolor brushes and I'm considering the Escoda travel brush since it's the only one available on the shop nearest to my province
Hi teoh! I was searching for travel brushes online because, I woukd bring it to school with me and because it's collapsable I could put it in my pocket or pen case without fear of damage. Unfortunately the only ones I could find online are raphael travel brushes in 8404 size 4(the only one I could find that would sjip to my country that is) .Is it good?
+Suzala Suzala You won't be able to fit the Escoda #10 into the box that I showed in the video. The largest Escoda travel brush you can fit is size 8. If you're working on A5 size sketchbooks, I recommend a size #6 brush. I'll be putting up a video soon (already recorded) on the different brush sizes to choose.
+Teoh Yi Chie Hi again. Thanks for the perfect timing on the travel brushes. Quick question.....for a beginner - who hopes to advance and be worthy of the quality of the brushes - What size travel brush would you recommend?
i recently bought 3 escoda versatil brush and i love it... their really good,, though they hold 10-20% less water than an original kolinsky... and the point is really good...
Thanks, good deal. Love your reviews. Maybe an update? We now have more good options for out and about. Rafael and Isabey. Silver Black Velvet, DaVinci, etc.
you are addorable smart and talented .i have watched many videos over the years .i have hundreds of brushes and paints ive been painting 25 years mostly acrylic.im learning realistic art a rose and bird painting will make my dream of bieng an artist will come true im thinking of getting tubes of daniel smith and a great brush what do you think
Hello I know this is an old video and you have moved on to other things, but if you can I would really appreciate your advice. I am considering getting either an Escoda Reserva or a Da Vinci Maestro both in their smallest travel brush versions (so size 2 for Escoda and size 1 for Da Vinci). I am looking for something that will keep its point well and be great for producing thin hairlines and fine detail, specifically something that would allow for hatching with the brush. In your opinion, specifically in terms of the performance of the bristles, what would be best for getting sharp, highly detailed/fine brushstrokes?
Escoda and Da Vinci are both good brands. I prefer Da Vinci collapsible brushes because I prefer the screw on brush body. Metal push-on bodies can be loose if you get a badly manufactured one. As for hair quality, I have good experience with both companies' brushes over the years.
The Reserva No 2 directly purchased from Speedball (Escoda’s authorized US reseller). Um, has issues keeping a point. Hit n miss with the no 2. My Reserva no 4, awesome. No clue about DaVinci in that size but I don’t have any problems with the larger sizes I own. I think a size 2 in Sable may be quite hard to get right for whatever reason. It’s odd. But ya never know til you try. 😊
Great video, Teoh! Often when I search for watercolour questions or reviews, you will have already made a video that covers it, so thank you many times over! :) Question: you recommended Da Vinci and Escoda Reserva for *kolinsky* travel brushes. If you had to choose between the two brands, which one would you pick? And, why?
How did you know I was about to buy a travel brush?! Thanx for the review.. I see that you cannot fit the DaVinci #10 into the travel box, Can you fit the Escoda #10 in? and what about the Connoseur #10? Also, What size brush would you recommend as the most all purpose as I may not be able to buy another one for quite some time.. Thank you-love your videos!
I purchased Daniel Smith Water color paints at 50% off - I got all the colors you have in your other video so I can make my own colors. Are you giving classes? If not, you should.
+Red Gemini Arts Wow. Daniel Smith at 50% off. That's a GOOD DEAL! Nope, I don't give classes. Currently, I'm just making these short videos on RUclips. :-)
Hi Teoh, thank you for the informative video - I have a small collection of travel brushes and was curious about a couple you showed (not that I need any more!). Just a minor pronunciation note, don't say the "t" in bristle - it's more like brissle. I have a set of Silver Brush Black Velvet travel brushes that I like a lot but the quality is not consistent from brush to brush (hopefully they have gotten better since I bought them though). My newest obsession is a hybrid waterbrush I made for travel - it's not as compact but it is very convenient; it combines a sable hair brush tip with a waterbrush body (if you are interested, I just posted about it).
+Kate Evangelista I just wash them with water after each use and leave them to dry standing up in a cup. No special methods. My brushes last for years.
+Teoh Yi Chie Thank you for your great videos. On the topic of cleaning afterwards, I've seen two different types of stands that hold the brushes vertically or at a slant- with the points downward to 'drain' (not that there is water in them) or 'aerate' so that gravity helps keep the remaining moisture out of the ferule. What are your thoughts on this.
+kula89511 I think there is no difference between having the brush tip up or down when you are storing them. Gravity will not be strong enough to pull all the water out. The hair will still dry through normal evaporation, so there really is not much difference either way.
Hi Teoh, I know this is an old video but out of the Escoda, in a recent video you said they dont really keep their point on the Sable brushes. You said Rosemary also dont really keep their point after use. So out of the Brushes Would you say Da Vinci have been the best for keeping there point and being Sable hair ?
I'm quite new to different brush types - I recently got the Isabey Sable Travel Pocket Brush (red sable). I know that it is mainly for watercolour but I'm looking to try out gouache soon. Would you use a red sable brush for gouache or would you stick to synthetic/other?
Do you know if the connoisseur size 7 round travel brush will fit into the portable painter pallete? I know you said that the da Vinci Maestro travel brush size 6 does not fit. Thanks a lot!
+Teoh Yi Chie I'm looking to buy the Connoisseur flat and round brushes. If you have the time, can you please give the measurements of the bristles, length and width? I'm finding it difficult to find how big these actually are.
Hi Teoh ! Im looking for a new synthetic travel brush and the Da Vinci seems great. Is there any difference between the 1573 and the 1593TP ? I couldnt find informations about it, specifically Have a good one, man
And those one ? They seems really cool but I can t find any reviews of this Mimik brushes www.jerrysartarama.com/mimik-kolinsky-sable-mini-deluxe-travel-brush-set-4-leather-case
Hey Teoh! I was just wondering how you get your round brushes back into such a fine point when its dry? When i dry my brush, it fluffs up, and i find it hard to put it back into the cap. Any advice would help!
What travel watercolour brush would you suggest that is cheaper than £20 (round, size 8)? Because I am looking to upgrade by daler and rowney brushed as they don't hold enough water to paint with and they lose their point easily
Im stuck between escoda optimo and reserva. If im going to get reserva, will it be worth its price for an art student like me, or will optimo be more suggested for me? Also, will i be able to feel the difference between the two?
Optimo is slightly software and nicer to use. It holds more water too, relatively speaking. My recommendation is to get small Optimo brushes (size 6 or small) and large Reserva brushes (cheaper). If you are on budget, just get the Reserva brush.
I think what u mean is to buy smaller Reserva brush and larger Optimo brush 😂 but thank u for responding. Also, is a Reserva size 6 be enough if i just paint on portraits in a5 sketchbook? Or will the size 8 be more reliable?
Interesting. I was thinking of just getting 1 brush (size 6) to start and hope it will suffice for fine lines and washes as I learn. The Reserva is very slightly cheaper than the Optimo in the UK, though from different suppliers.
You can get them from Jackson's Art UK. They have free global shipping for brushes when you hit £20 amount of purchase www.jacksonsart.com/?acc=c9f0f895fb98ab9159f51fd0297e236d&___store=jacksonsart_en&f=menu
Very detailed video. I adore you. You've made watercolor painting very interesting and I feel I have enough knowledge to do a good job. Thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge.
Thanks! the more you draw the better you get.
I tend to wet my travel brushes with a mix of gum arabic and water, point the brush and let it dry and it will a perfect point dry or not
that hole is actually there to release the pressure as you insert the cap onto the brush. Without it, the brush would pop out.
I was about to write this. +1
I thought it was there so that the water could evaporate and not make the brush moldy.
I'm learning how to draw now. I have a strong desire so I know I will be able to do it. You make great videos, you don't have useless chatter, you keep my attention.

Very informative video, Teoh. After watching this, I will be getting the Escoda Versatil.

hello Teoh, how are you? did you do a more recent review? Would love to see this as it's now 2022. all best from Europe ✨
These brushes are still good. I still prefer DaVinci travel brushes for the screw on body/handle.
Thanks, good deal. Love your reviews. Maybe an update? We now have more good options for out and about. Rafael and Isabey. Silver Black Velvet, DaVinci, etc.
The designs have been quite similar. I've not seen any that are very different. It's just the hair that's different.

Synthetic for gouache as you’re not supposed to use that much water

Synthetic
