I’ve just started learning watercolor and so far I’ve tried the Princeton and the silver black velvet and my favorite has been the silver black velvet for sure. I found the Neptune to be too floppy I much prefer the silver black velvet cause it’s just stiff enough to give me a bit more control. 😊
This was very helpful - especially HOW to use these brushes. I also really appreciate your approach and the reminders to have fun and not take this all too seriously - I have followed your advice to cut out the good parts of a messed up painting to use on a card!
Princeton, and Rosemary & Co, are the only two brands I use. I haven't even tried any others. They both hit that spot between great quality and great price. Finding paper and paints that you love, and can afford, can be overwhelming (and expensive!). So I just stick with these two brands for brushes. They make life easier, LOL
Which series of the Rosemary brushes do you like ? The reviews are excellent for their brushes and I did a research last year as to all the different levels of firmness on each of the series of their brushes. People seem to like the Red Dot. I agree with your comment 100%. It’s so true…..getting just that ‘Goldilocks’ spot. 🥳🤗🤭
Loved this video Ellen !! Simple , Very helpful and straight to the point…and absolutely invaluable to us ‘newbies’. It’s such a minefield out there and it can get very frustrating and overwhelming 🙄🧐🧐🧐😩😩 It is also very interesting to see these same brushes coming up as favourites over and over again from lots of respected artists on RUclips. 🥳🤗
My vewry first brush was a Princeton Heritage #6 round. I still like Princeton brushes, but I use bigger brushes most of the time. Still use rounds for the great majority of my work
Thank you so very much Ellen for the most informative tutorial on brushes that I have seen. I love your relaxed teaching and love all your videos. I’ve picked up so many tips 😊
Very helpful. I realize I am too restrictive with how I use my brushes. I need to experiment and loosen up more. I have lots of brushes but find I mostly reach for a 10 or 12 round.
This was a very good video for brushes. I seem to forget there are others that can do different things! I like a reminder every once in awhile. Thank you!❤️
I like all your suggestions and watching you use the different brushes. I recently cut up a larger painting that I wasn't fond of, and used it for a card. It was perfect as a card! As you always say: play! Thank you.❤
thaks so much for emphasizing the importance of practicing on the PAPER YOU WANNA use...sooo important...as ...like you mention...Arches...cold press 140lbs...is a challenge to get to really know...definitely not the same as like canson xl...cellulose...and your brushes will need a DIFFERENT kind of feel to them...once you try them on the Arches...so it is really not a waste of your paper...if you plan to paint on arches...play with your brushes on arches!...thanks for the great video....Janis
Tintoretto has a small dagger that Irit ( a RUclipsr I follow) recommended. They sell it at Jackson’s. It’s great! The princeton Neptune daggers are also very nice. I really think you would love them. They are so good for spontaneous brushwork. I love the wedges too.
Very helpful, thank you. I am also a fan of the Princeton Velvetouch long round (size 6) and the Aqua Elite round brush size 10. Have not tried the Neptune but the larger round brushes would be fun to try and play with, I think. New to watercolour painting and enjoying playing with the brushes and paper and colour and doodling.
Thanks for the great informative video! I like experimenting with different brushes. I have some smaller dagger brushes and I can make some gorgeous leaves! I have a feeling you'd enjoy one that's less floppy with shorter bristles.
I'm trying to loosen up so I just purchased Silver brush Hakes 10, 20, 30, and 40. They're this months challenge for me. I like the Princeton Neptune and Elite brushes best.
I got the medium size Petals brush from Princeton. I like it, but I’m inexperienced. I think you could do much the same with a round brush. Or even a dagger. But don’t take my word for it because I don’t have enough experience to be a good judge.
Hi Ellen. I started learning watercolor 2 years ago. You were the 1st tutorial I watched and have followed you ever since. Thanks for the comments about the dagger brush. I bought one and hate it. Thought it was just me😂 I use mostly Princeton but have a couple of Silver Black Velvet brushes also that I enjoy. Happy August❤ Pat
I love Princeton brushes too, they are so good ❤

Neptune were too soft for me too

To have it all shown together helped a lot. Thank you for this Ellen
Thank you SO much for explaining different uses & telling us the name of the brushes! Enjoying your beginner illustrations immensely! 😊😊😊😊

Thanks to your tutorials, I'm learning to use and appreciate my No.10 round brushes. I have the Princeton Neptune and an Aqua Elite.

Hi from Melbourne Australia. I love Escoda Perla and Versatil for florals and Neef Thomas Schaller mops for landscapes.

I really like Daler Rowney Aquafine-rigger 4, round 8 and 1.5 short flat
:) haven't used their line
I like their paint too. Thanks for info. Gonna try long 8.
Thank you very much for this video; I never knew the difference between all those Princeton brushes; watching you use them was super helpful.
Great info in all the brushes…Princeton brushes are one my favourites

I really love Kristy Rice's brushes. I use the daggers a great deal.
I bought the travel set of Aqua Elite rounds that you mentioned. I really like them
I was just thinking of buying new brushes. This was very helpful! Thank you, Ellen,

I just bought a Princeton stroke brush, like a soft, longer flat brush
Thank you for your videos & reminders to have fun 🙏
That was great, thank you Ellen.

Thank you so much, very helpful.
I have almost all of the ones you shared. And I don't get the floppy dagger either. Haven't figured it out yet. Thanks.
Thank you. Useful
Thank you!
Thank you Ellen for this wonderfully helpful video. I need to buy some better brushes now I’m getting back into watercolour painting ⭐️
Hi Ellen, what is the brush you use for really fine detail? And thanks for all of your wonderful lessons!
thanks!

Yes learn a lot from you. ....how can I send my paintings inspired by you?
