I will say, I don’t think Ian gets enough credit for stepping up, holding down the fort, and keeping Smosh alive over the years. It shows how much he loves Smosh and it’s his baby and he’ll keep it going.
Your absolutely correct thanks to Ian for giving us this opportunity to see them buy back Smosh. Without him having the drive and passion to keep Smosh alive we wouldn't all be here today.
Beep bop... I'm the Philosophy Bot. Here, have a quote: "Begin - to begin is half the work, let half still remain; again begin this, and thou wilt have finished" ~ Marcus Aurelius
Hearing how Ian was so sure that there would be a bunch of collabs between Smosh and Anthony's Channel after the initial departure and him realizing how that would probably never happen makes me feel like all the "Where's Anthony?" bits must've stung much more than we realized since Ian must've been wondering the same thing for all those years
I think Ian thought, their friendship would improve or at the very least stayed the same when Anthony left. He was probably hurt/offended when Anthony just blanked Smosh. Now we know that both of them understood each other’s position, and I’m glad they worked things out. I knew for a fact for the past few years they weren’t on good terms that much because they’d just acknowledge each other on their birthdays/Smosh anniversaries with really old pics.
I spent months in the comments sections back then trying to be the voice of reason. Any time I saw a comment about the two of them after the split, I was trying so hard to get people to back off. Ultimately a waste of time, as what's one person behind a keyboard really going to acheive
to everyone saying that Ian was emotionally distant in this video: i really don't think he was. As someone who is uncomfortable showing emotions (let alone on camera) i know how hard it is to even just talk about these things. And you can see in the way he talks about their friendship that he's clearly spent a lot of time reflecting on it, and it shows great emotional intelligence. Not everyone wants to be completely vulnerable on camera for millions of people to see, and that's fine.
I think people also forget. this is probably the true life ian. I've seen him on twitch once with Pamela Horton back when they dated. just calmly hanging out. the Ian in this video is the ian in that stream
@@lunatic5162Eh, They aren't haters. It's literally just teens who don't understand that some people are naturally like that. It's annoying when people automatically jump to 'well they're just haters hrumph'
I’m really shocked that they didn’t get along through a lot of it. I remember one video where Ian said “we hate each other”, which I always took to be a joke but apparently there was a grain of truth in it. That makes me kind of sad.
People who think Ian doesn't care clarly don't understand that he had to grow numb to things just to function. it will take time for him to trust and open up again, but the way he talks and the way you could see holding tears back when Anthony got emotional shows he cares.
Mad respect for Ian. Let it be known that Smosh would have never made it this far if not for his resilience. He really believed in this project and he’s held on long enough to see it come back to fruition. That takes immense strength and patience.
I love this. Also the amount of Anthony-jokes and being a boss-jokes he went through these past years. He could have easily given up along the way. So happy he didn't.
@@chopinetudeop.25no.5 I noticed that too, i noticed he is still a little bitter/hurt about the whole thing that happened and in this interview he is bit passive aggressive even when he was being extremely understanding. I think he is still hurt, outside they have partnered up again but i think mentally they have drifted apart alot , its going to take some time to fully reconcile and get adjusted to each others presence
"Even if it doesn't do well, I know this was the right thing. And if we burn it to the ground, I am happy to do that with you." what a raw line, straight from the heart
I love how awesome Mythical has been with this. They bought SMOSH when it was at its all time low and they helped it out, Rhett and Link are basically older versions of Ian and Anthony so I feel like they really sympathized with the situation and it’s so cool how willing they were to let SMOSH go. They literally took in a baby bird and freed it once it’s broken wing healed.
It's probably from their own experience too that they knew that someday Anthony and Ian would reach this point. 😊 I am sure they have been waiting for a long time
Id say good mythical morning is actually like the successful child who took in their father Smosh during a midlife crisis and helped him out because Smosh started RUclips 7 years before GMM
@@ClipzCollective true but despite GMM having a late start on YT, Rhett and Link had been best friends making content for longer, but still I see your point.
They should periodically do it, now that they better equipped for this. Emotionally they have matured so much. This is the first time I heard Ian talk this openly and this at length about delicate things, when he was younger he used to just be like '' whatever'' and keep everything inside so you could never really truly read him, you would never be able to tell he was this deep and this intelligent, he really never let anything slip past his wall. He is still clearly a bit defensive but Anthony has become so good at this he would be probably able to get him to open up like this again every once in a while if he tried, which is great because it's so important that things don't get brushed off. This was so inspiring and interesting to watch I loved it, I will watch it again for sure.
Rhett and Link are just officially the most supportive internet dads on earth. It warms my heart that they not only saved Smosh when Defy shut down, but also are the ones to hand back the torch to you guys after having had years to mature into the people you are now. Best of luck to you both. I'm excited to see what you'll get up to.
One should also mention that they made a multiple of their invested capital (according to Variety), so they didn’t sell it for breadcrumbs and love 😄 and Smosh wasn’t that good in the numbers. But yeah, they were still super nice for rescuing the channel when it desperately needed a sponsor.
I think it hits harder because if you think about it, Rhett and Link kind of are an older Ian and Anthony. Yeah, their content is mainly different but they’re two sets of best friends who started on RUclips around 2005/2006 and grew their channels into insane popularity.
From a business standpoint, let’s talk about how impressive what Ian did actually was. He was handed a failing business after stripping all of its resources, and told to make it work, or else his whole livelihood is ruined, and he somehow kept them afloat. That’s some extremely impressive work by Ian
@@lenat7397thank you. I was in the middle of watching the video and i now realize they talked about this... Yes, i should've wait. Thank you for answering me without judgement
"If we burn it to the ground, I'm happy to do it with you." You can feel years, months, days of regret in this statement cuz Ian just says that he value his friendship with Anthony more than the channel now. Really the most perfect ending speech you can get from him.
It's more beautiful when you realize that a lot of the decisions he made were motivated by money or the thought that there was greater potential on Smosh. I think this spirit will catch the vibe of their early work and I wish them the best.
@@TeeComedian exactly, it's huge coming from him considering that, like he mentioned in the video, he has gone through so much to just keep smosh together and now he's willing to let it go if necessary but as long as it's with anthony like in the beginning 😢 ironically, i think that's gonna do the opposite of burning it to the ground (or so I hope!)
Honestly props to Rhett and Link for caring more about the excitement of the whole situation and celebrating with Ian than worrying about the business side of it all
Honestly I always kinda got the vibe that mythical buying smosh was more of temporary “well hang on to this for you until you’re ready” type of deal and that there was always the thought that one day Ian at least would become the true owner of smosh. Anthony being back is just the icing on top.
Ian steering the ship through the defy shutdown is honestly one of the most incredible things a creator has done. He just willed it to keep going when the easiest thing would've been just to let it fade.
Respect! he said he was feeling out of it to the point others were asking him if he was fine. It's hard to be alone and having to run something like this and doing all of that while pretending you are ok for the sake of others. This is why the rest of the Smosh cast was so appreciative
Smosh really is everything to him and the fact he wanted it to continue to thrive in spite of his co-bro leaving and losing funding is really commendable
I was thinking about this! Ian said about Anthony that leaving was something that just had to be done, I think Ian steering the post defy smosh ship was something that just had to be done and be done by Ian
@@ez28gaming86no Mythical bought smosh after the downfall of deFY then Ian and Anthony started the process of buying smosh from them about 6 months ago😌
They are the OG’s and the best content creators on the platform. They smart business men, they balanced work and personal life being best friends and their content is consistent it’s literally as good as it used to be (good mythical morning) just high production… and their hairstyles swapped😅
The fact that Ian had to become numb in order to cope with everything is just..so heartbreaking. No one should go through that and I can't imagine all the stuff Ian had to deal with and I couldn't be more glad that they're back together. I haven't watched any Smosh videos lately, but I hope Ian's doing better with Anothony back in the picture and with their friendship becoming stronger once again. My best wishes go out to them. My childhood heroes.
Yeah, you could just tell for awhile there that he was NOT ok. I was so genuinely worried for him there for a bit but then now with Anthony being back I. The picture you really do see him act as if he does actually feel better
I’ve experienced being numb since I was 12 till today (I’m 19) because of school, just school. I love learning but have adhd so struggle to get stuff in on time or even ever. When I say I love learning I mean that I get really upset if I can’t learn something like math cause I know that there are cool concepts there. So like Anthony and Smosh I resented school but unlike him having a friendship and success tied into it, it was mixed up in a feeling of love for learning. And like Ian I felt like I couldn’t take a step back and give up on what I could gain from school in his case the potential success of his company. Anthony’s videos hit me at the beginning of high school when I wasn’t feeling the thrill of the transition to high school and relied on RUclips to cope. His videos on many different topics were great, especially the one about DID which got me learning about that for a bit. And so I started looking into who he is and found Smosh for the first time (and was surprised that I hadn’t seen it before) and when I found the videos talking about him leaving his business I was as invested as I could be at the beginning. As time went on and defy went out of business and Smosh was left to survive alone, I was there. When Brett and Link bought Smosh, I was there. And when they bought the company (this video), I was there. Seeing this video, seeing how they coped is invaluable to me and I’m happy to have been part of this journey even if it was simply as a observer. I’m in college and I’m considering dropping out, and i feel like I’m going to be floundering around like Anthony was when he left Smosh. I connect to the journey of two men’s video making venture, through a need for success in a conventional way. Which is ironic since creating videos on RUclips is not conventional, but with their success there is a conventional path your supposed to take in business which they did cause they didn’t know what else to do. Now that they have their creation back, thinking outside the box even in relation to business is key. Cause people do the conventional because they know it’s safe and supposedly guaranteed. But it’s not. And I feel like this story of two best friends estranged by a business is a shining example of that. Thank you for reading this to the end (or not). I’m excited to see where Anthony, Ian and Smosh go next. I hope you have a fulfilling life (and if you can’t imagine it, that’s alright) and always remember that’s it’s ok to consider or genuinely take the unconventional path the whole
@@Enigma88080 my life was/is exactly like yours according to this comment, down to the smosh journey and the personal journey, and honestly i don't know what to say because i'm a not a person used to expressing my feelings this way (or any other way) but seeing someone with such a similar path walked in life made me feel somehow less soul-lonely. i hope it gets better, thanks for writing that ❤
@@MsMiDCthis is like a fever dream. Smosh is a legendary part of RUclips and when they got bought out it killed a piece of what made it special. Wonder what this will be like
This wasn’t just an interview. This was a whole therapy session that these two needed, and I’m so happy that we are able to hear their thoughts on their time together under Defy Media and their friendship.
Guys in the replies, you get the message. Calm down. Even if it's not "therapy" you get what they're trying to say. They're reconnecting and sharing what they've learned about themselves and each other and their friendship. Stop trying to call this person "parasocial." You can't help it but sound "parasocial" when you've been watching a content creator for years. Sheesh.
Rhett and link being childhood best friends who preserved smosh and then happily sold it back after Anthony and Ian were able to come together again has me crying
That's all I think about when I see reserve videos about them buying Smosh back. That 2 life-long best friends, in a way helped bring 2 life-long best friends back together.
Smosh would NOT be here anymore unless Rhett and Link saved them. Ian said in an early SmoshCast episode that the company that was real close to acquiring Smosh when Defy went bankrupt was really REALLY BAD. Like the company that was the closest in the bidding game after Rhett and Link, I believe. There was a real possibility that Smosh could've gone under an even worse company than Defy.
It's like that line in Everything Everywhere All At Once. "Of all the places I could be, I just want to be here with you" (really good movie btw to anyone who hasn't seen it)
Rhett and Link are truly the dads of early RUclips culture. Through every issue, every financial struggle, they truly support the actual talent born from this site. So much respect.

It was his baby basically and he refused to leave it . And good thing he didn't leave cuz although Defy era of Smosh became bad after awhile after they were bought by Mythical , the good videos started coming again . I think the current cast and crew efforts also helped for example Spencer as the Smosh Games director really gave that channel life with the help of Damien and Alex as well , same with Kiana as director of Smosh Pit with the help of Kimmy ( which is a more recent thing since she used to be a cast member and now she is crew) and sometimes Courtney help as well . I think the worst part of Smosh was Defy , Mythical Smosh was good and lets see how it will be now that Ian and Anthony own it again .
I love that Rhett and Link were more excited about having Anthony and Ian together again at Smosh than they were about how much they'd get selling the channel back to them.
It feels like Rhett and Link took the Smosh seed and protected it until the time was right for them to hand it back over. It seems like they were hoping this would happen! They are truly great men.
The part where Anthony said he spent so many years looking back and regretting their past decisions, and then now realizing it all had to happen that way for them to reunite…. was really special. Best of luck you guys!
Ian is so underrated and underestimated. For those of us who really only have watched Smosh post-Anthony and post-Defy, Ian was the glue and beacon of light that held Smosh together

We gotta appreciate how supportive Rhett and Link has always been even when it came to selling Smosh back to Ian and Anthony. They really are the real OGs that held onto Smosh and really cared about it.
Rhett and Link and the entirety of Mythical entertainment. It legitimately makes me feel like a middle aged woman who's favorite boy band in highschool is getting back together for a legacy tour. I missed you guys. I was 15 the last time smosh was REALLY smosh.
Smosh, the company, has existed for years. Are you saying the products and efforts of the Smosh brand over the year are invalidated and are not "REALLY" Smosh, just because one cast member had left mid-way through? What?
@@vee24 no one is saying that, but Ian and Anthony will always hold a special place for people who used to watch them back then. I still love them, always will. @@chocomojo9552 Honey, Rhett and Link are from the 2010 RUclips era. This kind gesture isn't unheard of. Unlike cash grabbing content creator and streamers nowadays, creators then were actually nice and help each other out a lot of times. Drama didn't even sell at the time.
Bro. I actually wanna cry. This isn't just about two dudes owning a channel again, or even about all of us coming back home to this, but it's just seeing two brothers coming back together despite all the life and individual growth they've gone through. This makes me so damn happy
Ian is very intelligent and thoughtful,he has grown into the role of the leader. They have both matured so much as people The old Ian struggled with lines, while anthony struggled with being comfortable on camera. Now anthony is comfortable and composed doing interviews and being entertaining while ian doing a lot more things and bring smosh to how theyre doing now
I have to say, from my perspective, Ian basically un-sunk the Titanic. He grew a lot when Defy media went defunct and his passion for keeping Smosh alive is what kept it alive. That entire ordeal and watching everything around it was hugely inspiring. Rhett and Link were superb for giving Smosh a chance, with confidence for sure, and are the best for agreeing to sell it back all these years later with grace. Ian is a truly capable leader and the entirety of the Smosh crew really brought their A game to get Smosh through a very turbulent time and flourish to boot. Edit: Refined and added needed praise.
I really like Ian saying “this had to happen” because he is so right. Smosh wouldn’t be alive today if Ian hadn’t stuck around and fought for it and there is no way Anthony would have recovered and healed had he stayed to fight for Smosh at the time. They both did what they had to do and without them taking those two very different paths this wouldn’t have been possible.
And I think at that point they both needed the time apart to learn who they are as creative individuals and what they bring to the table. Their friendship needed a break and now I’m glad it went the way it did because now they are back together! 😊
The fact the Rhett and Link where genuinely excited for this and not even worried about the business end shows the kind hearted people and amazing people they are
I like how this started off with Anthony being super pessimistic about Smosh and Ian being optimistic. Then when they regrouped and pitched the idea to buy Smosh and write sketch comedy again, Anthony lit up and was super optimistic meanwhile Ian was skeptical and pessimistic, believing it wouldn’t work
It feels almost like after their experiences, they influenced each other and "pulled" each other in the opposite direction like magnets; but without being around each other for so long, their momentum just carried them and they didn't get to keep each other grounded enough to find a middle ground. Here's hoping they ground each other now!
11:58 His laugh directly after "What friendship?" Made their friendship seem even more warm and loving, i rewound that part probably 7-8 times. You can sense the strength and stability of their bond in that moment and in the silly type of laugh more than any other moment I've ever seen between them, it feels like it's rooted int their childhood and has survived so completely
Link and Rhett are truly the example of good guys on and off screen. The fact that they bought smosh and held onto it until you guys wanted to come back around to it is very touching. That's the nature of the OG RUclipsrs. Having each other's back and genuinely being good, supportive people. Some of the greats/OGs still exist all these years later and I'm glad Ian and Anthony are part of that group. The Green Brothers (vlog brothers) and Phil DeFranco are other OGs and they've evolved over time also. 😊
i can see why rthett and link were so supportive. besides the fact that they're wholesome and great guys, Ian and Anthony are probably the only other youtubers and maybe people who can relate to them with the whole best friends since kids and creating a buisness together on youtube. both gmm and smosh revolved around two cool dudes being best friends. strikes too close to home for them to reject the offer of selling smosh back to ian and anthony. im glad things are happening the way they are

@@kroneexeMaking jokes during a serious conversation doesn't make a person immature in my opinion. It's a super serious conversation on camera for millions to watch. By mature, I mean you could tell from the way he was talking that he had ✨️gone to therapy✨️ and that they'd talked about everything honestly off-screen. His blunt honesty here is also genuinely mature because they spent years pretending a friendship. Being able to say "I did resent you, but I also understood your situation" is literally maturity, I don't know what to tell you.
It's heartbreaking to see the difference in emotion between these two and how they converse during the video. Since his seperation, Anthony had time to declog all the emotional resentment he had for the company and was finally able to do his own creative thing. This interview was likely the first time he was able to lift those weights off personally to Ian. And it's why he was able to cry at the thought of remembering their first lunch together, and how he realized that his childhood bestfriend was still there. In the meantime, Ian was left to manage this big company all by himself; he went through Anthony's seperation, Defy medias abrupt collapse, being adopted by Rhett and Link, the rewriting of Smosh's brand, managing a team of talented people, and handling criticism from the public. I couldn't imagine just how much emotional baggage Ian had to carry that he had to seek a therapist. And he mentioned getting therapy in this video like it wasn't a big deal. But it was a big deal. Because Ian learned how to compartamentalize all his issues, he likely dealt with the emotional trauma a long time ago. Which is why, despite discussing all the things he went through in Smosh and with Anthony, that he got so used to not expressing his emotions. And its why we see him talk somewhat slower and emotionally un-phased in this interview. It's the image of a person who went through so much but still wants to put a smile on our faces. Though Anthony went through his fair share of struggles, I feel like Ian doesn't get enough credit whenever people talk about Smosh. And I think that's where the fans had it wrong - that Smosh wouldn't survive with just Ian in the picture.
To me it was always Ian and Anthony were the two vital organs so to speak of smosh, it can survive hooked up to a machine and “live” artificially without one of them but it can’t do much else, with them both in Smosh can finally live again, not just survive.

I second this as well. If not for Rhett and Link, Smosh (as we know and love) would have died in 2020 at the latest. Props to R&L for helping this channel stay alive after all these years.
I think it comes down to the fact that they were adults when they started their channel. The emotional maturity is already there when they became business partner. In a way, they already knew how to separate their personal life from their work life. It's just a guess, but I think it's a solid one.
As a Smosh fan, this really felt like a healing process for both Ian and Anthony, and also for the fans. There was so much going on behind the scenes that we didn’t know. But truly at the end of the day, I want to say thank you for everything you guys have done for us.
I agree. Which makes sense why they process things differently when it comes to defy. Communication is key and they both bottle things up just to avoid conflict. So much stuff could've been avoided if they were open about their feelings. But it is what it is and it had to happen so this could happen and I'm happy for them. I'm just happy that Anthony is healed and Ian is just happier lately.
I love seeing the dynamics between them. Ian's dry humor contrasts well with Anthony's silliness, and you can tell how comfortable they are with each other.
@@devarient in term of creativity (and content creation) I kind of agree, but in term of internally handling / managing Smosh, I'm certain that they are now better & more mature especially when it come to workplace attitude and their overall friendship. And if we burn it to the ground, I am happy to do that with you" Even if the channel ends up dead with low views and low interaction in this era of RUclips, they still have their channel again and their friendship back. That's what matters the most.
Seeing Ian speak candidly and be real is strange. He's always so silly, but turns out he's an intelligent thoughtful person. And I can tell despite the rough spots and growing pains that Ian really cares about Smosh and continues to do hilarious content.... Also Shayne is a goldmine for sketch comedy, so good staffing.
@@Disturbed2240 he's clearly the star right now. They joke about it often in their roasts. If Shayne's not in a video anymore I don't even watch tbh. He's one of the funniest people I know on RUclips. And in an interview once he said if he could meet any celebrity it would be Dan avidan who I would have to say, might be the funniest RUclipsr there is.
Props to Ian for sticking with Smosh, even when he knew Anthony needed to leave, and then opening back up to rekindle the friendship. Excited to see where Smosh goes next.
I'm so so proud of Ian for how emotionally mature he was throughout this whole interview and honestly ever since Anthony left Like people made jokes about "where's Anthony" all the time and you could tell how much Ian was hurt by it but he never made a big deal about it I'm so glad they're friends again and Ian can fully heal He's a fucking strong human being and my heart goes out to him The way he kept Smosh going all these years and has really grown so much It's been just incredible seeing his journey and I'll forever support him
The symbolism of mythical media keeping smosh together until Ian and Anthony could buy it back isnt lost on me. A tale of two friendships, one that was together from the beginning helping another find each other again. I remember Rhett talking about their rough patch when they were making like 4 videos a day
I love how Anthony is completely different from his normal video's, not an interviewer shooting professional questions, but just 2 bro's hanging out and explaining everything, together!
I feel like their story could be a whole separate movie. From childhood friends making comedy sketches to a degrading friendship from difficult bonds to finally reconnecting and realizing what they had many years ago. I never knew how in depth their relationship and lives were
Immediately was thinking this. In like 10 years gimme like a biopic abt this friendship, becoming one of the early titans of a site that was a forerunner to the content-creators industry, it’s impact on their friendship, break-up, and then buying the channel back.

Yes absolutely
Hearing how Ian was so sure that there would be a bunch of collabs between Smosh and Anthony's Channel after the initial departure and him realizing how that would probably never happen makes me feel like all the "Where's Anthony?" bits must've stung much more than we realized since Ian must've been wondering the same thing for all those years
Broo, don't make me cry 😢
Ian was really hurting
You can tell how much it stung in the videos. It's pretty obvious.
to everyone saying that Ian was emotionally distant in this video: i really don't think he was.

Yeah. I loved the; F*k the business side of it! We'll figure it out. This is so exiting! 😄

Respect! he said he was feeling out of it to the point others were asking him if he was fine. It's hard to be alone and having to run something like this and doing all of that while pretending you are ok for the sake of others. This is why the rest of the Smosh cast was so appreciative

The fact that Ian had to become numb in order to cope with everything is just..so heartbreaking.

Ian is very intelligent and thoughtful,he has grown into the role of the leader. They have both matured so much as people
The old Ian struggled with lines, while anthony struggled with being comfortable on camera.
Great take.
Absolutely agree
I agreee! He also had a crazy amount of support from shayne and Courtney during that time
Ian was definitely the foundation of Smosh for years.
Honestly they were the pioneers of RUclips
I really like Ian saying “this had to happen” because he is so right. Smosh wouldn’t be alive today if Ian hadn’t stuck around and fought for it and there is no way Anthony would have recovered and healed had he stayed to fight for Smosh at the time. They both did what they had to do and without them taking those two very different paths this wouldn’t have been possible.
Exactly. Now they seem to have a unique kind strength that's better than ever

Then when they regrouped and pitched the idea to buy Smosh and write sketch comedy again, Anthony lit up and was super optimistic meanwhile Ian was skeptical and pessimistic, believing it wouldn’t work
It feels almost like after their experiences, they influenced each other and "pulled" each other in the opposite direction like magnets; but without being around each other for so long, their momentum just carried them and they didn't get to keep each other grounded enough to find a middle ground. the maturity was pretty one sided tbh. As much as I like Ian.
So true
To me it was always Ian and Anthony were the two vital organs so to speak of smosh, it can survive hooked up to a machine and “live” artificially without one of them but it can’t do much else, with them both in Smosh can finally live again, not just survive.
@@Crackedcripple as someone who grew up watching the two, I couldn't agree more. But I also learned how to appreciate the collaborative effort of the rest of the cast.
