I think My Tears Ricochet is easily the best song she's written. The metaphor she used to describe it is "in the superhero movies, the villain is always someone who was once the protagonist's best friend." It's the idea that your longest, truest companion knows how best to hurt you because they know you so well. Very powerful song.
Last Great American Dynasty is the story of Rebekah Harkness and how she married into money by marrying William Harkness. The story goes on to say how she was villainized by the community when her husband died from a heart attack and for the way she spent the inheritance after his death. Taylor Swift purchased the home in 2013 and had similar problems with the community. They would judge and critique her for throwing parties but also for doing routine maintenance to a house that was old and needed many repairs. At one point she was fixing the wall that separates the house's private beach from the public beach and they appealed to have her stop construction. There was even talk about proposing a Taylor Swift tax just for the repairs and changes she was doing. It was completely ridiculous, as the homeowner it was completely in her right to change/repair the home as she wished.
@Shelbz27 ˣ‿ˣ Watch Hill in Rhode Island has a public beach, and an area that is private. Taylor was not fixing the house; she was adding a sea wall to stop erosion (on her own property). While the construction was ongoing, the beach was fenced off (standard, when hazards exist in a construction zone). People used to accessing the beach were upset because of the fencing, and because her private security would run them off her part of the beach. The big complaint, as far as the neighbors were concerned had to do with the fact that she hadn't notified them before construction started (which, she doesn't have to; she had all the permits approved). Also, they disliked the paparazzi, the additional road traffic, and the 4th of July parties she used to hold back in 2013 - 2016. She stopped the parties during her silent period, when she dropped most of her "squad."
I’ll never grow tired listening to this album & watching people slowly fall in love with it 😂 It’s my favorite thing ever. Thank you for this reaction.
You should eventually watch folklore: the long pond studio sessions. It's basically Taylor performing each and every song on the album and with the people she created the album with, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner. Between each performance she talks a bit about each song and what they mean to her.
My tears ricochet is about her former label Big Machine Scott Borchetta, when Taylor wanted the rights to her albums, he offered her one old one for every new one she recorded, she left Big Machine, then Scott sold them to Scooter Braun for $300 million dollars (that was for her first 6 albums). That is what she is referring to when she sang her stolen lullabies. Also, the jewels she gave him, her Fearless album went Platinum and Diamond.
Yay I love that you’re listening to this album!! It’s definitely a lot especially the first time. Taylor always talks and writes in metaphors so it takes a while to get used to and understand what she is trying to say. If you want to watch a video of Taylor Swift experts really taking apart the lyrics you definitely have to check out the Folklore Breakdown Videos on Bonny and Emily’s channel called “Chats and Reacts.” I think you would really enjoy it!
i love seeing your interpretations of each song, it took me a good few listens to understand any of the songs, also can recommend if you have disney+ taylor has the “long pond studio sessions” in this she performs all the songs live and goes through and helps explain them
I very much appreciate you being willing to look up the parts of her songs and Lyrics that you don't understand, yet. The Fandom will educate you the rest of the way. Just be careful about saying anything off color- the rabid section of the fandom will come for your throat. The joke about Taylors lyrics, is that for many of her songs you need a dictionary close, or a Masters Degree to understand what she is talking about. You'll get there, I have faith in you.--SDK
It's okay bro, it's a lot to process, taylor is writing stories in fiction. It really takes a lot to understand these songs. You have to completely be submerged to fully understand.
I hope you don't think I'm being rude by suggesting this, but i think a good idea is to pull up the lyrics whilst reacting to Taylor's music as It will help immerse you into her storytelling a lot better. I also find it to be a far more enjoyable experience when I do it that way & really makes me appreciate her Lyricism more.
I live in southern California and currently it's raining with some gusts of wind and this reaction came in perfect time. Folklore sets the mood. I'm probably gonna be listening to her all day now lol. Thanks Kam!
Hahaha I enjoyed this a bunch and highly appreciate the effort you're putting into trying to understand the nuances of these songs! It's definitely one of the less straight forward albums to date which was great during quarantine when we had nothing to do but sit around, listen, and discover all the meanings of the lyrics. While there are plenty of song analysis videos out there, one I really enjoy is English Teacher KP on RUclips. She analyzes the songs individually and pulls all of the literary devices forward to really dive deeper into the potential meetings of the songs (not strictly relating to Taylor, but as the "speaker" of the song) and one thing she always says is that interpretations are up to the reader, so if you can make it make sense and back up your argument - you're not wrong 😊
Ayyye I’m glad you enjoyed the video and the efforts I tried to do to make it make sense 😂😂😂😂 and appreciate you for the input it really helps out a lot!
You really struggled with some of these 😭 it’s cool though, i struggled too the first time lol. Btw evermore is much much more lyrically complex so be prepared 👀. Btw she posted lyric videos to all her songs on RUclips for folklore and evermore. I feel like that might be easier for you.
If you want lyric dissections, like you mentioned at the end, “English Teacher KP” has a fantastic channel and covers I think almost all recent Taylor Swift songs. Here's her video on my favorite song from this album: ruclips.net/video/_stJ9ajxg5E/видео.html
there are reaction videos that dissects folklore album or you can watch The Long Pond Studio Sessions where Taylor performed each songs with her collaborators and explain the songs
if you want to know the true meaning behind each song, i recommend you to react to "folklore: the long pond studio sessions" on Disney+ or anywhere where taylor swift herself breaks down/explains the meaning behind each song with co writers and producers of the album.
The three songs in question, which Taylor otherwise calls " The teenage love triangle", are; 'Cardigan' 'August' and 'Betty'. All three songs feature very similar plotlines and nuances of detail so I am most adamant that this interpretation is wholly accurate. 1. 'Cardigan'- This song is written in the perspective of 'Betty' who we hear the name of later on in the album. The metaphor of the cardigan itself has multiple meanings. One being that Betty herself feels like an old, worn cardigan "under someone's bed", she is cast aside by her lover (James) and feels neglected of affection. The second being that cardigans are normally associated with comfort and homeliness; her lover realises that his real place is with her, hence the lyric "you put me on and said I was your favourite". Essentially, James isn't good with commitment and breaks Betty's heart by flitting around with other girls, however, realises his true affection for Betty, as she narrates "I knew you'd miss me when the thrill expired... I knew you'd come back to me". 2. 'August'- This song is written in the perspective of 'Inez' who we hear the name of later in 'Betty'. She is the girl who James had an affair during the summer with "would you trust me if I said it was just a summer thing?" (Sourced from 'Betty'). This song takes on a revisitation of her role in the love triangle and how she recognised that her romance with James was just a whim and a summer fling "Will you call when you're back at school?/ I remember thinking I had you". This song coins a very similar line to the one found in 'Betty' when it says "Remember when I pulled up and said 'Get in the car' " so we know they are linked stories. 3. 'Betty'- This song is written in the perspective of 'James' who is the young man causing this entire conundrum. The song sets out as almost an open letter to the recipient 'Betty' hence the title. He talks of how he realised her cold shoulder towards him when she "heard the rumours from Inez". Perhaps alluding to the concept that Inez is bitter that the fling ended and so wants to almost 'punish' James by exposing his infidelity. He is genuinely regretful of his decisions which he believes were created by his immaturity "I'm only seventeen I don't know anything but I know I miss you". He contemplates turning up to her party to apologise and reconcile, which he eventually does "Betty I'm here on your doorstep and I planned it out for weeks now". When they do meet again they share a meaningful kiss. James stands in betty's cardigan, this image symbolizes his acceptance of Betty for all that she is; she is his home. Therefore directly linking to the concept explained above in 'cardigan' cr: @Sophie Ellen
Yooo you’re a legend for commenting all this for me, I truly appreciate all this info and taking your time to get me to understand lol thank you forreal!
I'm pretty sure the second girl (in August) didn't have a name. Some Swifties have taken to calling her Augustine, but that's neither here nor there. Inez was just a gossipy girl that went to their school, she wasn't the 'other' girl, she was just a girl who had heard he rumours of James cheating on Betty.
@@aparnay6391 Taylor herself said in the Long Pond Sessions that she always called the girl from August, Augustine or something similar in her mind when writing/singing it.
