    Super cool video! Thanks! I have a GranPappy but I haven't used it in years because I was using a 3-Liters Tfal with a included basket for draining the oil. BUT I had something smaller to fry and I was too lazy to clean to clean out the oil on the t-fal. That made the Presto instantly Convenient to use😊 I needed a simple refresher on how to use and This video was IT!😊😁 Thanks👍

    One of my 3 roommates in college had a Fry Daddy. I think he spent $12-13 on it back in '90-'91. That fryer was used at least once a day or more for 3 years straight. It's simplicity was it's strength as there were no fancy controls that would fail, making it useless. If someone is looking for an economical and robust fryer these may be a good choice for you. One suggestion, placing a sheet pan underneath the fryer will contain a lot of the mess as will placing a frying pan splatter guard on top of the fryer. I appreciate your honest reviews Uncle Scott.

    Fry Daddy was my first two deep fryers from the 80s and 90s and have used the elongated traditional sizes we normally use today since then.

    Hi Scott. Interesting review of the GranPappy. The simple on and off with no temperature control is a deal breaker for me, plus it is pretty much a uni-tasker. Last year I bought the Presto Kitchen Kettle and I love it. It functions as a fryer and has a very good temperature control feature. It comes in two sizes like the Fry Daddy and GranPappy, I have the smaller one. The cooker is extremely versatile as you can cook beans, rice, make soups, stews, spaghetti sauce, pot roasts, braised chicken, you name it. If it fits in the pot you can cook it. The unit comes with a glass lid and a fry basket. It is a great alternative to the Presto fryers, check them out.

    This is my first deep fryer and I haven’t used it yet (bought it more than 30 days ago, so I’m kinda stuck with it now 😅).

    Fingers crossed I don’t burn myself or somehow set my lady-cave on fire!🤞🏻

    Love the name! Need to upgrade that scooper to an Asian wire mess version. You'll spend way too much time waiting for oil to drain off the scoop and you'll take away too much oil with that plastic version.

    IMHO, the slightly larger Presto Deep Fat fryer 06006 (max 7 Cup oil) is a better bet than these. It is less expensive than both BUT most importantly it has a variable thermostat. Its only disadvantages are the low power (1200w) and the thermostat may not allow extremely high temp deep frying temperature and the dreaded non-stick finish they all have.

    Is anyone aware of an aftermarket fry basket that will fit the Grandpappy?

  • @TracyKMainwaring
    @TracyKMainwaring 10 месяцев назад

    I have a T-Fal EZ Clean. It's so large, but the actual fry area seems quite small because the basket slopes. The timer died, the clip to hold the basket up came off, and it's not filtering very well now. My family is shrinking, so i was thinking it's time to downgrade. The lack of temp control concerns me. Getting chicken and fries at low first, then at high heat, is actually a restaurant technique. Could you use a thermometer, start frying before it comes to heat?

    • @UncleScottsKitchen
      @UncleScottsKitchen  10 месяцев назад

      Hi Tracy... it's rare that someone asks me to help downgrade! If that T-fal has croaked and you want a smaller fryer, I would just get a smaller unit with the temp control but not go down to the GranPappy because it sounds like you do some real cooking and need the control. The GranPappy is good for what it is, but the lack of temp control holds it back for real cooking. It's great for frozen packaged stuff but not really so much for raw chicken, for example. You could look at the T-Fal Odorless model... it's smaller than the EZ Clean. Also, I have had some good luck with the Cuisinarts... they have temp control and they come in several sizes. You can occasionally find screaming deals on them too. Here's a review of one Cuisinart: ruclips.net/video/VxNYeKxmf2Q/видео.htmlsi=xUUW2-8wAgmTyhKF

    I tried air frying. It does cook the food but in no way does it fry it. There's no comparison. Next time I purge my cabinets, my air fryer is up for adoption.

    • @tylersmith3139
      @tylersmith3139 7 месяцев назад

      We have several videos of air fryers working and I also have my own experience. It certainly does fry food. It just comes down to your technique and how you cook the food to get that fried taste without deep frying in a vat of oil.

  • @morrismonet3554

    Air fryers are a scam, they are nothing but table-top convection ovens. I have a GranPappy, and it works well, but for large baches nothing beats my cast iron Dutch oven.

    • @tylersmith3139
      @tylersmith3139 7 месяцев назад +1

      Except size matters here. Air fryers are smaller so the circulated heat gets very hot very quickly, making it better for frying while convection ovens are good for roasting and baking.
      What exactly about using convection makes it a scam? It does fry with much less oil and gets the same or similar results. That's not a scam. It uses air convection to fry, hence air fryer. It's an objectively healthier and better way to fry most things you would deep fry which is wy they're a household staple now.

      @@tylersmith3139 You can't fry with air. The very definition of frying is "cooking in a pan with oil." You have been duped, fanboy. The food is nowhere as good or as crisp out of your tabletop convection oven. You won't ever see one in a restaurant or commercial kitchen.
