    GREAT breakdown of these lenses. I love the look of them even with some of the small issues they have, the highlight roll off and skin tones are fantastic

    Cooke lenses never test well. However, cinematographers use them for a reason. They are for shooting amazing images. Cooke is always in the conversaation for a reason. They render people beautifully.

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  9 месяцев назад +1

      I think they test well. Cooke makes some really nice lenses. They are their lowest tier lenses and still have quite a bit of Cooke character.

      @@ScottBalkum The people that have no clue think they need edge to edge sharpness. I think Cooke's are great I have a few sets. I am probably going to get these as well. Great video by the way.

      @@erockvaughn2190I think the people who also melt over Cooke lenses also need help. This rampant consumerism is crazy. “The cooke look” it’s halarious when people say that but will end up color grading their work to the max. This is just a tool. Filters and post work can easily get that same look. It’s great for people with unlimited budget who want to have more fun etc. but it isn’t revolutionary or game changing. The Batman showed us. Skill in unreplaceable. Just because Cooke built a brand that’s huge like luxury clothing brands doesn’t mean they have a product that so amazing

      True. Cooke lenses are not clinical photography lenses like some modern users seam to think modern cinema lenses should aspire to be. That said. To each their own. There are many dry alternatives like sigma glass etc or ultra primes.

    I'm always amazed by the amount of CA in the "Cooke Look". Speaking of which, did Laowa ever figure out what what was going on with their Proteus review samples?

      agreed! the CA in the test shots looks terrible - like rokinon level quality for $5k??? the cooke marketers know they can get away with a lot with the Cooke name slapped onto a product.

    Thanks for the review. I was not expecting to dislike the CA as much as I do. Maybe they figured that cold be corrected on cameras that don't shoot RAW since they are trying to appeal to the mirrorless shooters? Or maybe they figured no one would try to shoot wide open during the daytime? I think that for the money, there are options that don't have those issues, are faster, and have user changeable mounts.

    At last, someone whose done what I call a real test of these lenses!! Thinking of pulling the trigger on the 32, 50 & 75mm later this year. Don't need the complete set and therefore cant justify the extra expense.

      B-roll is really nice as it shows off the character of the lenses.
      I’ll have to re-watch the focus chart section more closely.
      I think the duration is perfect, no need to go full Balkum with a 3 hour review, though it would be cool if you got someone from Cooke for a livestream to talk about these.

    👍Liked the testing. It's great to have another opinion. You happen to get me into or out of buying cine products. I just got the Cineshooter + and was looking at these lenses for the small form factor. The CA and the fact that the lenses aren't really sharp at 2.2 make these a no-go for me. Who would want to shoot a high-end production at 4-5.6 anyway? In the end, its just another lens made for mirrorless users. Am I wrong?

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  3 месяца назад +1

      We all like what we like and there’s nothing wrong with that. Personally, I shoot high end productions at T4 - T5.6 all the time. Having a beautiful blurry bokeh doesn’t fit everything I shoot. But I do loves me some bokeh. As for the CA, I didn’t mind it much. Its a tool and there’s a right time for any tool. The late great Mark Toia stated, “There’s no such thing as a bad lens” and he’s absolutely correct. Is this a “one set to own”, no, I don’t think so either. But, I can see some stories these would serve well.
      I am happy that you use some of my videos to make your own decisions. That’s exactly what I want. I don’t want to tell anyone, buy these because I say so. I simply want to share hat I find and my opinion and then you choose for yourself. Perfect! Check out the NiSi Athenas if you’re looking for cleaner, sharper lenses. And, they’re about 25% of the price for the set. Another set to investigate and they’re small.

      @@ScottBalkum Thanks for the reply. I've listened to Toia RED comments and about lenses.AGREE. I am actually looking at the Athena right now. Besides the lens characteristics to choose from for the Komodo, I don't want to use native RF mounts. I'd prefer PL. Question, I shot automotive. My quagmire is that I need sharp (clinal) lenses but am drawn to the character of anamorphic and the Cooke look. Do you have any other suggestions? I can take the conversation offline if you are ok with that. Let me know and thank you for the videos. There are a few Tubers that I trust and value. You're one of them.

      @@ScottBalkum I thought that this video was very well done, and that it must have taken a lot of time to make. Hopefully you can test some other sets, e.g., Nisi Athena, Canon Sumire, because there's definitely a void on RUclips, although I don't know how large the market is for cine lenses in this price bracket.

    I really feel like they absolutely ruined the launch of these lenses with their mount choices. Now they're charging you more for the other mounts? Ridiculous! They should have launched in RF mount immediately. The CA is pretty bad, especially for T2.4
