    Having the pinky collapse as it presses on a string is a very common problem for guitar students. It ruins, or makes more difficult, everything you play that uses this finger. Here is how I fix it with students with this pinky finger exercise.

    Lol. I've been playing wrong for over 15 years and this simple exercise, specifically touching the string correctly and then applying pressure to press down, is probably the most useful tip I've had. I try to learn pinky exercises and end up playing the exercises incorrectly so my collapsed pinky has been getting really fast at collapsing. Thanks for the tip.

    When I play the violin iv always had to move my pinky finger away from my ring finger to note properly. Now since iv taken up guitar it is very noticeable when playing full cords that involve using all four fingers. I'm in my sixties and iv showed this to my doctor. She stated iv got the beginnings of arthritis in some of my joints which includes that end joint on my pinky. I will continue to work with it though.

    so i can’t really fix my collapsed pinky since when i expand my hand (or for example i put my 4 fingers on a single string like she did in the video) my pinky gets super curved like if it was facing the other fingers, and if i try to put it straight, the other fingers would curl up like my pinky, so basically my fingers are more curved than normal hands and i don’t know if thats a big problem for playing the guitar, and if so, what can i do?

    • @cineturon
      @cineturon 3 года назад

      I have a similar issue, and I don't see it on anyone else in tutorials. When I curl my fingers, my pinky curls inwards, straight into my ring finger. I'll keep googling and strengtenning my pinky/fingers for a while, before I go to the doctor, haha.

    is this only for classical acoustic guitar or for someone who plays blues rock on a electic guitar, i dont see many electric guitarists like srv or john mayer really stressing over the curvature in their pinky but minimally using them. sp dpes this curvature only need to be applied to classical guitar?

    • @kenz2756
      @kenz2756 3 года назад +1

      I assume there aren't really much of a rule, you can opt to use it or not. Some might not even need to focus on the curvature, everybody's finger's anatomy is pretty different, for me, my left pinky locks even with the slightest push when it's straight, my right one however, is very difficult to even lock at all.

      @@GuitarPrinciples I'm working with a physical therapist. Hypermobility is a different kind of monster. With a hand flat on a table, all of my fingers can and do easily bend backward 90 degrees, and thumbs can be placed behind the first knuckle of the index finger. The only good news has been a lifelong ability to escape any handcuffs because the thumb collapses entirely into the middle of the palm - the hand the same radius as the wrist. Washing the back is easy too when the left palm can be placed flat against the back between the shoulder blades and up to the base of the neck. No amount of technique or practice is going to be the first hurdle. Physio is. Different monster; different needs. Surgery is not off the table if the muscles alone cannot be strengthened and trained to keep joints in check. It's hereditary. Dad had the same thing. Though it's more pronounced in females than in males, he managed to play guitar, so this female is determined to do the same... by hook or by crook. Already though, like he did, I can pluck the strings in both directions with my thumb. In the end, I don't expect that I will be playing "cookie cutter", like everyone else can. I may end up playing like few others can instead. But, hell or high water, I'm going to make music, whether I'm Gumbi or not. ;) All my life, I've been told don't even bother trying to play guitar. At 55, I'm saying scr*w 'em. I will do what I can, however I can, as best I can, whatever it takes.

    I’ve got a question and problem.
    I can spider slowly OK from high E to low E, but when trying to spider from low E to high E, while leaving my second, third, and fourth fingers on the previous string (ie E to A, or A to D, or B to E, etc.) my fourth little finger mutes the next string. I have space between my palm and neck of the guitar, and I’m arching my fingers as best I can (not collapsing), and am only fretting on the tips of my fingers, but the little finger still mutes the next string. Nails are short.
    I’ve been doing hand, finger, and arm stretches, but I can’t seem to stop the muting. Any ideas or solutions? How to get an even better arch on my little finger? Thanks.

    I wouldn't call my pinky lame, until it frustrates me sometimes. But a lot of people commenting who can't correct their playing, either they've been doing something wrong a long time, also everyone has different joints and tendons scientists have observed this and not everyone comes the same from the factory some might need a shorter or longer scale neck, and lastly, my problem is a past extensor tendon injury from martial arts, falling, brawls, etc.

    This is really interesting coaching advice. I've had a go this morning and I'll need to work at it but I'll stick with it because it just looks the right way to play... One of my problems is (for example) if I pick (especially on top e or a string) index > middle > ring > pinkie, my pinkie is way up off the fret board when my ring finger comes to fret. If I curl my fingers (as per your coaching) that pinkie instead of flailing, just unnecessarily curls back as far out of the way as possible.

    Sometimes the problem may be orthopedic. I play classical guitar. My pinky collapses at the pip joint (2d) only when the finger configuration involves stretching a distance of 4 or 5 frets. I think it is a structural problem, maybe related to an old injury. I'm ordering a "ring splint" that will not let the joint go beyond about a 150 degree angle. If it works, I'll get back to you.
