Favorite parts:
1:47: the full power of the orchestra hits you
1:54: everything kicks in, with Jeff’s multi-layered “Rainy day” soaring vocals
3:14: OWWW OWWWWWWWWWW!
Thanks for this
I think thats Kelly Groucutt doing some of the Raiiny Days
YOU nailed it ! great opening song in Columbus Ohio in 2019 !
We must never forget the amazing orchestration by Louis Clark,I think that this provided the ELO sound. Louis died in February 2021. Fantastic Musician. RIP Louis.
Thank you for pointing this out. I had no idea...
Richard Tandy’s input was also… instrumental.
Richard Tandy’s input was also… instrumental.
my all time favorite ELO song. must be listened to EXTREMELY loud, in a car, alone, to be full appreciated. 🎶
Tara U lol agreed!!! that's what I'm doing at this very moment! ❤ Jeff Lynne. pure genius.
Tara U totaly agree :-)
Concerto for a Rainy Day in general is an absolute masterpiece. Wish it got more recognition (aside from just Mr. Blue Sky)
ELO opened with this song on their recent tour. So much goosebumps. Best concert of my life
Cool, mine is Mr. Blue Sky.
Best Double Album of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO!
especially this side of one of the albums called concerto for a rainy day. It's the best full side of an LP ever with the possible exception of Abbey Road's medley
No doubt.. E L O are definitely from somewhere else 🪐 .. nothing that good can come from earth 🌏 without flaws
OOTB.& SECONDS OUT OH YEAH❤🎉🎉🎉
this Album made me an ELO FAN
Anyone else get goosebumps listening to this?...heaven!
Got goose bumps as a 15 year old in 1977 and still getting goose bumps aged 57 years old. Jeff Lynne pure genius. 🎻🎻🎸🎸🎼
Goose bumps every time. Love listening to this song on repeat 🎧
Allso with Big Wheels goosebumps all over ELO changed my musical life
Same here. 57 and still loving everything they did, except Don't Bring Me Down. The rest is magic, Mission was brilliant!
Yes, but it doesn't feel complete if it isn't followed by Big Wheels, Sumner and Lightning, and Mr Blue Sky!
Boy, Richard sure played fantastically on this song. RIP.
I often listen to Standin' in the rain, as do my neighbors.
😂 oldy but goody !
& I mean ur joke 🤣
Ha ha..❤
I like this one the best on the album, and then Stepping Out, Starlight, and Night in the City.
Fun fact: the staccato section @1:10 spells out ELO in Morse code. Credit to Polyphonic - The Story of “Mr Blue Sky”
I was literally just watching that video
Haha same
I can read Morse code but I'm darned if I can hear it there, I've even used a spectrogram "waterfall" display but it doesn't come out....?
Awesome fun fact. This was my late fiancé and I's favorite song by ELO, among several others.
cool
at 0:34 the thunder says: "concerto for a rainy day....." .
but you need to have a very good hearing to catch it . and a lot of hour's listening to ELO :-)
God bless Jeff lynne !!!
+yoavkahati Never caught that..... Now I did! Thanks!
Awesome, thanks! I always thought he was saying "shut up" to the storm, but now I know better.
I KNEW IT WAS SAYING SOMETHING BUT I NEVER FIGURED IT OUT TILL NOW
True u are a master
It wasn’t that hard...
The beginning of this song scared the crap outta me! Thought there was something wrong with my record 😅
Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy. Two visionaries that will never be topped. I think if Beethoven, Verdi, or Puccini were around now, they would have a right to be jealous. Jeff, i dont care if you tour or not, i want you in the studio creating more masterpieces. Seeing you live is fabulous. Putting vinyl or a cd on to play is a never ending thrill.❤
The way this transitions right to Big Wheels gets me every time. Utterly beautiful. A New World Record and Out Of The Blue are the greatest albums ever recorded in music history, dating back to Mozart and Bach...
BRAhahahahaW 👾👽🛑
If electricity was around in the days of Beethoven..this is the stuff he would have been churning out..Jeff you are a gift from the gods!!
One of the greatest songs ever written. Jeff Lynne is a genius.
Absolutely a genius and Beyond
@@cavallogianni you two have awesome taste in music.. not something I usually say on a youtube post
Let an old drummer just shake your hand for your comment mate!🤝🏻✌️🏻
Sometimes it's another song he's written, but it comes back to this one quite often. Tonight, this is the greatest song ever.
It a beaufully written piece of music with the whole band
I live on a Black Country narrowboat in London now, but my best childhood memory of when I was a child on the Bourneville Estate in Birmingham, is of sitting outside my Granny’s house and thinking that line “hey you, with the pretty face” was about me, because I was bullied, it was so uplifting. Apart from a couple of bumps in the road-never again have I been bullied! Thank you dearest Jeff Lynn!
Lyrics for the song, and for when I'm singin in the shower :
I'm standing in the rain
I'm waiting all alone
I'm so tired
I want to go home.
I'm standing in the rain
Getting soaking wet
I'm doing my best
But what do I get?
I'm standing in the rain
Can't seem to get along
People rushing by
Wish they could hear my song.
I'm standing in the rain
It's teeming down on me
Cats & dogs
I want to be free.
I'm standing in the rain
Doing my thing
I'm trying my best
What does it bring?
I'm standing in the rain
Getting soaking wet
I'm doing my best
But what do I get?
The good intentions and the pain
Lay drowned now in the pouring rain
I tried to be so good this time
But here I am under the sky.
The good intentions and the pain
Lay drowned now in the pouring rain.
『 Phagalizer 』 thanks so much for the lyrics
HE IS THE MESSIAH
I've been mishearing, "I'm standing in the rain," as, "satellite," for so long now the heck.
@@-AAA-147 satellite? how 😭😭😭😭
ah yes, because you recite a concerto in the shower, indeed
Rest in peace, Richard Tandy. You will be much missed. Thank you for your part in the music.
God, Mr Lynne is a Genius!!!!!
This is side one, of record two of the album "Out Of The Blue".
This whole side is called "Concerto for a Rainy Day" and includes the songs "Standing in the Rain", "Big Wheels", "Summer and Lightning" and, of course, the immortal "Mr. Blue Sky".
+jmaxg at 0:34 the thunder say: "concerto for a rainy day....." .
but you have to have a very good hearing to catch it . and a lot of hour's listening to ELO :-)
God bless Jeff lynne !!!
For me, I first listened to this album on 8-track and the "Concerto" ends the album on track 4. I've never been able to hear the album any other way.
The question I should be asking is, who here is from Polyphonic, a fan of ELO and didn’t know about Jeff Lynn’s attempt (successful might I add) of turning Classical Orchestral methods and adding some modern pop to them to make this Concerto.
Those for songs in a row in just heaven in my ears ❤️
Jesus i'm so impressed. Such talent..! They should have been way more popular. They're so unique.
Speak french.
@@tedblight1518 Speak Spanish.
They are 'way more popular'. One of the most lauded English bands of all time...here in the UK anyway.
Can you explain why it's so great? I like it but what makes it so good?
@@deathandroses3861 Jeff Lynn being a god at song writing
Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra the best ever musically 😎👍💯
A stunning masterpiece.
The musical genius from Birmingham, England.
🥁🤝🏻✌️🏻
I was just 14 when this classical &rock mixture had me hooked
1977?
The best album in my lifetime.
Out off the blue 77, my favourite album ❤️
"Concerto for a Rainy Day" is 20 minutes of pop/rock perfection.
This whole album is such a classic. It's still my favourite album ever

I was 17 when this album was released. Amazing to listen loud!
Was a present on my 17th! Best present ever!
Super przebój Electric Light Orchestra z płyty CD Out of the blue,, lubię słuchać muzyki z tej płyty ,a w szczególności tego nagrania , ale najlepsze wykonanie tego przeboju to koncert charytatywny na Wembley arena w 1978 roku . Ale też jest bardzo dobre wykonanie z koncertu z roku 2017 na DVD i CD ,, Live in Wembley or Bust ..Ja jestem fanem Electric Light Orchestra od prawie czterdziestu lat.
I understand your gist. Respect mate.
He has the most beautiful tone I can listen to him for hours through the day😍
Hellyeah 🤘🏻
Best concert EVER, Anaheim, CA 1977 The spaceship coming in was the best!!
Orchestral rock at its best. Thanks Jeff for the great music.
the fact that Jeff Lynne put his lyrics on the album was in itself...genius
what did we do?...we learned his songs
Brilliant
1977 on the greatest Double album ever ELO's " Out Of The Blue".
Oh yes. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. Started listening to it in thr 70:s and still turn it on every month or so. Magic!
My favorite ELO song, also...
I vaguely recall that this was the second ELO album that I bought when I was a 12 year old back in the year it was released. I clearly recall that A New World Record was the first album I bought - that was a year earlier. This is such a great song!
This is a masterpiece and i don"t let anybody prove me wrong.
Song has been stuck in my head for over a week now, cant get over the lyrics and those awesome keyboard skills
You can't get it our your head then?
How did ELO never get a billboard #1?!?!
At least the albums Discovery and Time both were #1 on United kingdom.
@@takasaki3109 From Out of Nowhere got #1 in November-19
4 words. Ahead of their time
It was the 70s. There had never been a decade before or after so crowded with legendary talent. The Who, The Stones, Zepp, Floyd, and on and on were all in their prime. Then you had the new blood crowding in like Heart, The Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Steve Miller Band, ELO, Earth,Wind, and Fire, the Commodores, Journey, Boston, Foreigner, Hall and Oates, Dire Straits, ABBA, Olivia Newton-John, Linda Ronstadt, TOTO,Lynyrd Skynyrd, Elton John, Billy Joel, Elvis..yes, THAT Elvis for about five years, AC-DC, Styx and on and on. There just wasn't enough room.
@@kenperk9854 You really know what you're talking about, that's exactly the reason.
Everyone knows songs from this album yet they don't know what album those songs are from...that's a classic
Another great song by ELO!!! .. I don't think they have recorded one bad or mediocre song....Awesome talent, and now 40 years later they are more popular than ever.
Some of their songs are not as riveting to me, but even the not- so- great ones are still entertaining.
One of their many classics
This is my first time listening to this song by ELO and I got to say that I like it. I also like the cover art. It's cool.
The best and nothing close. Stirs such emotion
This, without doubt, the best intro to a song recorded in the history of time.
This song is the defining song of Classical Rock. Pure art. Although if you want to hear the song at it's greatest moment, listen to Electric Light Orchestra Part II's One Night live in Australia 1996 version. That is the greatest version in my opinion.
Hum, each to their own but I found that version sounds like a typical cover band, there was no sparkle and it sounded a little dry and wooden compared to the maestros' version.
I saw this live two days ago in Dallas. Love you, Mr. Jeff Lynne!!!!
zeldafreak701 MSG night 2 was epic! So glad I saw Jeff Lynne live... my earliest memories are of my dad listening to OOTB
Can't wait for tomorrow, seeing the show at the Tacoma dome. My roommate and I are big fans a got both our moms tickets to go for their birthdays.
I saw him do it at Wembly my best night ever.
Generation 60s Century 20 has already started to say Sir Jeff Lynne. "No matter what they say..."✌️🏻
I bought this album because of "Mr. Blue Sky". I now play it every day because of "Standin' in the rain".
This album is a top 5 of mine! Talk about epic, these guys were definitely a huge influence on music in general and specifically for the time!!! Great stuff!!!!
This is absolutaly wonderful! Only a Genius can create such a song! No words to describe!
Out of all the ELO songs, this one has the most THUNDER!
I went to see ELO earlier this month at the Oracle Arena with my father, who was growing up during these times. Although I am not from this era, I am deeply grateful to my father and my uncles for showing me artists from their time. Their sound still sounds the same till this day and is pure magic!
My father grew me up on this music because that's how he grew up. I went to the Houston concert last Friday. This was their opener. God I love E.L.O musical genius.
SugarBug Me too!! I wish I grew up in those times! They closer with Roll Over Beethoven. Jeff Lynne is a true musical genius. Long love E.L.O!!
The whole LP contributed to the advancement of music xxxxx
indeed, and one of the first albums to use a vocoder.
Still a masterpiece ❤❤❤
Always will be 🙏😊👍❤️
Właśnie się zaczyna, to już jest 👍🤣 uwielbiam ♥️♥️♥️
I saw this tour in Augusta Maine. A spaceship for a stage, lasers, smoke, 2 cellos, 1 violin, drums, bass, keyboards, guitars and vocal harmonies to die for.
I love to listen to this, when it's raining and it has to be veeeery loud!
That song is one reason, why Ootb is one of my favorit albums by ELO and they n general
out of the blue has to be up there with BEST Double Record of ALL Time,I find it hard not to be number one
My first ELO LP "Out Of The Blue." And bought every new album ever since.
I find myself listening to this song while riding my motorcycle. The throttle opens wide at around the 3 minute mark. It’s pure exhilaration.
Long live Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy. Standin' In The Rain is one of my faves of all time.
P.S I am so honoured to be a fan of this wonderful orchestral band: The Electric Light Orchestra.

Side three (Concerto for a Rainy Day) - Standing in the Rain
Love the album cover
what can anybody say
best group ever ever
not now ever

from start to finish
Had the 8 track tape growing up. I had very sophisticated taste for an 11 year old. 🎶❤🌈 never tire of this recording plus Eldorado.
Turn it up! Best heard driving down a country road on a misty day.
I just met ELO this week and I feel I am going to enjoy it til the end of my days.
Welcome 🙏😊👍❤️
This song takes you to another dimension...
Thank you for sharing ! 💖
Who already known that The Concerto For a Rainy Day is a four song set, made up of this song, Big Wheels, Summer and Lightning, and finally, Mr. Blue Sky!!!! Ahhhh .. that blow my head :D
And the vocoder "Please turn me over" at the end of "Mr. Blue Sky" is literally a reminder that "Concerto For a Rainy Day" is just one side of one record comprising "Out of the Blue."
They played this song first at the ELO concert I went to. Such a great time :D
stand in the rain, I would stand in a monsoon for ELO.
Wow, this has the wow factor, they are just amazin, 70s music at its best, Jeffs voice, say no more luv the sound xx🎸🕶️❤️❤️
E.L.O.the best. 👍👍👍
the build up at 3:38 to 3:45 is just 😩😩😩
it should have been 1 in the charts
It wasn't released as a single.
Doesn’t matter. The point is that it achieves such a high level of sonic resonance with so many pleasing elements, and it’s the material that #1 hit songs in the charts often have working for them
i love this so much
28 seconds ! Shivers!!
I bought this when I was 14. Damn I had good taste in music, genius album
2:35 - 2:50 an awesome song stuck inside an awesome song

The genius Jeff Lynne and a truly super band ELO without a doubt one of the greatest of all time. I have been blessed in that I have lived through the greatest music periods .
Mr Blue Sky is undeniably an iconic song, but I actually love Standin' In The Rain and Livin' Thing even more! This song right here is one of the most unique and electrifying pieces of music my ears have ever consumed! Absolutely masterful!

Inimitable Orchestra with inimitable Light of Electric Strange Kind of Jeff's Magic of melody, rhythm, professional vocals an' instrumental polyphony...👏🏻✌️🏻
This was the opening song when I saw Jeff love this past July! The show was TOTALLY AWESOME!!
Elo one of my favorite bands I still have the vinyl of this album. If reincarnation is a thing please replant me in the 70's
There are no words to say about how great the next four songs are. E...L...O...! Concerto for a Rainy Day...EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
