Classic Game Room reviews RIDGE RACER 7 for the Playstation 3 PS3 video game console system. The RidgeRacer series from Namco has been a classic arcade driving video game for years. In this seventh installment you drift and slide your way to nitrous oxide nitro boosting your car into warp speed to defeat your opponents in all kinds of crazy races. Collect cars, earn fake money and play this game at your own risk. Classic Game Room didn't care for it and that's a shame because CGRHD likes most racing games. Why didn't we like it? Well, that's kind of obvious. "AWESOME, YOU'RE SLIPSTREAMING!" Yes, the voice dialog is back seat driving at its worst. The graphics are sub par for a PS3 title and as this review shows the gameplay is lacking. If you want to play some great arcade style racing games check out Hydro Thunder and Fatal Interia!! But if you really want to drive cars then you neded to play Gran Turismo, Forza or Test Drive. RR7 wasn't our cup of beer, but that doesn't mean you won't like it. Graphics supbar for PS3? Well, I recall it's the only racing game that runs 60fps in 1080p on PS360. And it still looks awesome on my 42'' Full HD tv 8(eight) fucking years after it came out. I love your reviews Mark, but on this one you really dropped the ball

First of all, the aim of this game is for abstract trippy outlandish fast futuristic fun. Second there is an option to turn off the woman (or man if you prefer that) if you just have a quick look in the game audio settings. Thirdly, a lot of the music is written by Japanese musicians as as side projects having been big fans of the game. (Takeshi Ueda of The Mad Capsule Markets to name but one of the featured artists in the Ridge Racer series). This game can't be weighed up against the likes of GT and Forza, because this game has deliberately been designed to be the exact opposite. When I think of this game, I think the designers soul intention was to design racing for what the Japanese wish racing would be like. Throwing your car around corners at 250mph sideways would make a hell of a better motor sport that lets say NASCAR. The simplicity of the game and it's retro arcade style make this game brilliant. Many of the other viewers that have watched and commented on this video too are also correct, you drive terribly in this. Try category 1 racers in down-town rave city and see if you can make it past 8th place then I may have a positive look on your opinion, because the reflexes and precision you need to be a master on this game is yet another thing that make this challenging. To this day the Japanese people play this game for many of these reasons. Give it another chance dude! This game is awesome!

Alright, let me start by saying that the first Ridge Racer is an ARCADE GAME. They had a cabinet for it and everything. So of course this game is going to be freaking Arcade-Like. They are meant to have an unreal sense of speed and fictional driving mechanics. I don't like that you complain about realism when the game is not meant to be realistic. It's not a racing sim like Foeza. You just cant compare the two, especially since they are in a completely different racing sub genre. Seriously. You want realism, play forza. You want arcade, play NFS, or Daytona, or RR, or Midnight Club.
I don't mind that you dont like it. People have opinions. But don't complain about it not having realistic mechanics when it's an ARCADE RACER.
I think he missed the whole point of this game and the series itself. It supposed to be like Outrun, it's always been. Music is actually awesome, some electro, house all in Japanese climate. Dude I hate Fast and Furious I think is the biggest crap even made but sorry this game is just arcade racing with electronic music in the background. It's not supposed to be a simulator, it supposed to provide quick entertainment with nice beat in background, every single RR before was the same way. I remember playing RR on PS1 and PS2 it was awesome. Great arcade racing game, great beat and beautiful graphics.

I agree with you with the fact that it is supposed to be looking like that, but in my opinion, it is not a game that is so connected with the franchise. The game should not have some things like Nitro or that annoying voice, but it is not bad. I just thing that it could be better. Hope you understand me man! :D

NFS gives nitro for drifting, Burnout gives nitro for drifting. One of the worst reviews of Mark, PERIOD
yeah, seems like a totally innovative gameplay mechanic that nobody have done before.
That's because they are Arcade-like. NFS Underground was actually an arcade game so it would make sense for it to have those mechanics.

This is an awesome game it runs 60 FPS smooth and I actually like the female lead in the game. The graphics are nice and the in game videos depicting new cars and such are beautiful. You honestly have to be a RR fan to appreciate what Namco did here.
I loved Ridge Racer 1, Revolution, 4, but I hate Ride Rager 7: that drifting mechanics are so strange! I is not like you drift in any other racing game. It is more, you have to oversteer, then you have to correct, and then steer again, like: right, left, right. It doesn't feel natural at all, it is allways this pattern (and 2 others, at least they are described in the manual) you have to follow. I like the graphics, I'm okay with the voice, I like almost everything about the game, but the strang drifting-style turned me off that hard, that I sold the game, because I couldn't stand having it in my collection (of about 120 games). But I hope some more others like you had fun with it and could accept these mechanics...
Ridge Racer 5 on the PS2 was great
I think it's drifting was the best.
The best one in my opinion. And the last one to feature "hard to control" drifts. After that drifting became almost automatic

Id like more "good vs bad" in a review like this. This is just plain bashing. I mean everyone is entitled to an opinion ofc. But it stays true to a lot of the ridge racer mechanics, it does not seem like a good game in the series, but certainly not that bad. also i for one think the music is catchy! This is just my opinion.

I'm a big fan of CGR reviews, but this is probably the most anadequate of them. Still funny tho.
Btw, graphically RR7 doesn't look super impressive, but it runs in native 1080p + 60 frames per second. And it's a 2006 game on ps3. The visuals in that game looks very sharp even for 2024.
If you ask me, someone who knows how to play should review this game. Just because you don't know how to play it, doesn't mean it's bad. It's easy to learn how to play this game, it's all just about timing.
I actually like this game alot. I love the enviroments! This is just for fun & not meant to be realistic.
This game is fun Mark. It is high octane and very addictive. The whole point is trying to go as fast as you can around the drifts by using nitro to hit top speed before entering the corner. The faster you drift through a corner, the faster your nitro will build back up again. Once you are skilled enough as a player, you will be able to chain nitro drifts and high speed through out the whole race course. Having the skill to be able to to keep the car in control during high speed constantly is exhilarating and requires good reaction time, memorization, and strategy to master each track. I noticed from your game play footage that you used up all your nitro during the drift and not before the drift. You did not utilize the speed boost you gained from the nitro to its full potential in the game to build more nitro quicker. Once you get that down, you will learn other small advantages of using your nitro in the slipstream (driving behind opponents with less air resistance). Timing the right time to use nitro in the slipstream to reach a even higher top speed to attack the next corner will even net you even more Nitro for your next corner.

This game is OK, but its no Outrun 2006. Also, you CAN turn off the annoying announcer by turning the DJ volume slider off.
WTF! I liked this game! It still has a lot of players online. You can customize your car and theres alot of races. Some of the last races really gets your heart pumping. Way too harsh.
So much hate for this. 1. It is an arcade game, if you want realistic car physics than play GT. 2. The graphics are great and still hold today, almost 10 years after it came out. 3. I never really noticed her voice, and I still don't. Sounds like you're just looking for something to complain about here.
idk, it's one thing to not like arcade games but why even review a game and than hate it for all the things that make it it's genre.

I bought "RR7" for 5 bucks used @ Gamestop,and have to say it is an Absolute blast when played with a "G27" or "DFGT" wheel,takes a little time to get used to,but when you start getting the over all technique down,it's a very fun arcade racer,what really is amazing are the graphics..for a "PS3" Launch title thats over 6 years old,the graphics are simply beautiful and do not look dated whatsoever~highly recommend this title for "Arcade" racing fans,cheers;)

I like CGR, but I really would recommend this game to anyone and I disagree with all of the already weak points Mark made here. It's my favourite RR after having played many of them (1, Revolution, Rage, R4, RR64, V, and this one), the graphics are acceptable for PS3, not worthy of criticism, and the framerate is top-notch at 60fps. The announcer is annoying but actually mutable. And the drift physics are actually the most refined take on the RR drift formula I've experienced, and highly satisfying. So, pick this up, it is in no way a disappointment if you're an RR fan. Way better than 6, from what I've seen. I'd dislike this many times over if I had the chance.

Yeah, the voice actor in RR for the PSP is way less anoying, and you can turn him off if you just want to hear the sweet music (or the sound of you car bumping against a wall). Also the surrealistic physics is what makes RR fun imo.

Ridge Racer 7 is terrible compared to Ridge 4 and 5, but this review is still horrible. His complaints are ridiculous.
Dan Becker rr7 isnt terrible its different and i love each and every ridge racer this game is also so fun especially online, everybody is really friendly on there as well

2. i played for 30 hours to have all 100% complete with all cars and 'Special' cars.
3. Music is really nice, combining techno with some electric were just mindblowin.
4. I didnt suck at drifting becoz i know what you've called 'Ultimate charge', tye better the nitro timing the faster you go!
5. Xevious easter egg on Mist Falls? yes.
6. You use skill, you are fast.
7. Tuning is variative, even its experimenting, i use Esperanza the most becoz its utterly tuner heaven.
8. Hate it or Love it, there are still hardcore racers like me gets adore with it, if you bought the vita and unbounded titles, screw your money!
This is how a 'Honest Review' comes into it! and i am now one of the true Ridge Racer! BAKA!

I think your review was funny! I actually like RR, not 4 or 5, but 6 on the Xbox360 was good and I played this a few years back and it was similar to the 360 version. I like the "fake" car driving experience... I don't care for Gran Turismo or Forza etc. I also like those atv games where you can jump 10 miles in the air. And that guitar game with the rainbow buttons. I just picked up a PS3 and I am looking to get this game... do you know I'm having a hard time to find it under $30!!!

You got to admit, Bandai Namco made a very damn good introduction to the game by including an arcade perfect port of one of their earlier titles from the 1980s.

You know since ridge racer 4 (wich came out 3 year before Fast and Furious as you say) the gameplay as always included drifting.

I actually love this game. I dont play PS3 anymore, but way back when my friend had first gotten the PS3, I was planning on getting one. I played this and fell in love with it. I also fell in love with Spiderman 3 but that game wasn't for everyone, nor was Ridgeracer 7.
the drifting + nitrous system in this game is a huge variable and seperates the good players from the bad. If you don't like it, that's your personal preference, dosn't make the game bad. just means it's not for you. Personally i don't have a PS3 or an xbox so i can't play 7, but i have them for the PSP and love it.
the reviewer needs to realise that this is an arcade style racer and stop criticising it for unrealistic physics and nitro boosting, which are just part of the fun
I wonder, if you like good arcade racing games, then why haven't you ever reviewed any of the Motorstorm games on PS3? (if you would review one, Pacific Rift is definately the best one in the series). Or Project Gotham Racing 4 on Xbox 360? Since those are some of the best arcade racing games ever released, it surprised me you didn't review any of them. Just saying. xD
@TurningJappanesse I'm honestly quite convinced the entire point of this review was to point out why it's better he stays nit-pick free in his other reviews, as a response to people saying he never gets angry at games. To see him genuinely not like a game, watch Defender on PS2.

Ridge Racer is a game for people who wish to try something new or for who got bored of the reality rules ( or psychics ) which forces you to slow down in every turn , RR is not realistic & realistic at the same time ... Ridge Racer is like you're inside a dream ... racing in unreal world which only wants you to feel the speed - the machines - the nature beauty & it's musics which is one of the best things which made it a very unique game ^_^

Do you want to know what happened to me the first time I played this game? I tried to start a race with a straight line ahead of me. I selected the grippiest tyres and then set off. An AI cut across me so I had to go left. I touched the analog stick (which any other game would make you go slowly and gently left) and I drifted accelerating 200mph all of a sudden and crashed. I gave it a fair chance and I still hated it. No repeat of first disaster but there were more.
fair review, I don't get why people are moaning, however 7 is one of the weaker entries for me I still had great fun when this came out at a time, was it me but didn't the PS3 when first released feel like a real high end, high tech piece of equipment and the Xbox 360 was just plasticity? though both systems are equally as great but ridge Racer 7 felt ultra modern for me at the time, funny 5 did too for me, the drifting is a fine art in ridge Racer, sometimes easy to do but very difficult to master, especially on the original, if you understand the mechanic of ridge Racer you'll ultimately appreciate it more.
I love the old school arcade racing games where you can floor the gas and touch the steering wheel without going into a massive spin. Its funny that every negative thing the reviewer said about this game just made me want it more. I have bought racing games in the past and after a few minutes of playing them I had to say to myself "Fuck, another god damn simulation" or "Fucking open world, give me a simple track for fuck's sake"
i loved the original ridgeracer in the arcade because of the beautiful track design and the way you could whip your imaginary concept car around after learning the course a bit. it was sort of the racing equivalent of an on rails shooter. totally over the top with sweet 3d graphics,greasy smooth controls,banging tunes and some crazed american narating how great or shite you were every other second.this is the same reason i still razz RR7 from time to time.

I dunno looks like it plays sort of like Burnout 3, which I enjoyed a lot. It's not all about realism. I think these type of racing games I find more fun. Never played this though, I can see it's not perfect. Did you dig Burnout 3?
Hey man! I played the first 2 RR games and this game is supposed to be looking like an arcade game, but the originality since the first game is not so effective, in my opinion. :)

On my old PS1, I loved to play Gran Turismo I, II AND Rigde Racer, Ridger Racer Revolution, Rage Racer and Ridge Racer Type 4.
And I love Ridge Racer 7. I play to have fun.

I partly agree with you. I am a racing game enthusiast, that's the part I don't agree with you.
Other than that, Ridge Racer IS supposed to be a crazy "unrealistic physics and nitros" game, whoever buys the game should expect this. I've played RR series from ps1, always had it with me. I love the Gran Turismo series and Grid, but this game is just a must have as well with a simulation racing game.

Drifting to gain Nitrous Oxide also exists in Need for Speed Nitro, although that was a great game with licensed cars, an awesome car editor, as well as a very smooth frame rate and 15 well-designed tracks.
I like the announcing common mark i right you liked cheesests. Also burnout has the same implementation when drifting you get boost
Are there real cars in this game like GT-Rs and Supras, or are they all fictional. Oh, and is it one of those games where you just have to turn into the drift, or do you have to counter steer and shit like in real life?
