  • Giuseppe Antonio Capuzzi (1755-1818)
Concerto for double bass and Orchestra in D major
    - original composers version -
    1st movement: Allegro moderato
    About the piece:
Although Capuzzi was well-known composer of his age, this lovely concerto is probably the only piece still performed. His other pieces are forgotten nowadays, unfortunatelly. This is the original version of this concerto, this recording present its urtext in its original tonality and octave. This piece is composed for three-strings-bass tuned in fourths and the manuscripts (based in British Museum) present solo bass staff in the real sound octave. Performing it one octave lower doesn't only sound really bad, many of the tones would simply not have been playable on the three-strings bass, the standard instruments in Italy during Capuzzi's lifetime.
The most of double bass players know rather F major version of this piece, which is in fact recomposed version by Francis Baines, the editor of the first printing of this piece. It was one of the very first printed scores for double bass. Francis Baines's version contains many harmonical changes of the orchestral material. Also very many single tones of the solo part have been changed throughout whole the piece. Its rapid recomposing of the second movement, printing obviously strongly romatized articulations and some decions which were out of any stylistic habits of the classical age (like placing the cadenza in the middle of the first movement) are decisions which are clearly unacceptable for today's understanding of the old music and trying to perform it in its historically correct form.
This original version can be performed very well in any of modern tunings in fourths: G-D-A1-E1, A-E-B1-F#1, but also as well in higher scordatura c-G-D-A1 and d-A-E-B1. The scordatura used during this performance was A-E-B1-F#1 which is probably the least comfortable one of all of them, but it was choosen just for practical reasons: Dittersdorf's concerto was performed in the same concert (that recording was already uploaded on RUclips few years ago).
This orchestral material can be hired by the Yorke Edition (GB)
Special thanks to Duckkyu Yoon and Jinwon Yoon for providing me the tape of their amateur video recording of this live performance as it is probably the only existing video. It made possible to create and upload this recording- and to share it with RUclips viewers.
The professional 32bit/96kHz multitrack sound recording (in pure natural sound, without digital hall processing) has been recorded using Schoeps microphones MK2s, MK2H, MK21, MOTU firewire interface and Samsung notebook / Windows XP.
    Artists:
    Božo Paradžik (solo double bass)
    Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim (SWDKO)
    Sebastian Tewinkel (conductor)
    Thanks for watching, Božo Paradžik

Its great to see a performance of this level, because i hate that it has become an student concerto after that nobody want to play it.
It should be played like koussevitzky, bottesini and another great bass concerts :) excellent work Master bozo...

I'm working this with several students, Yorke Edition, Rodney Slatford arr. There's a number of articulation and dynamic markings which are very different from your performance. Based on your notes I'm assuming the original does not have these.
Sounds great in the octave you performed. It actually seems to fit the instrument better up there and allow for more musical expression. Thank you for sharing!

Yes, that is true... my goal was the fact that still quite many people believe version in F major is the original. About the articulations, I had to adapt couple of things to make the piece sound right in a concert hall of capacity ca 2k 🤗 thanks

Hi 🤗 RUclips has messed up the sync, I have no idea how, it used to be perfect when it was uploaded. Actually, RUclips has had a server bug for years so the picture was delayed about 4 frames per second. This video was rendered perfectly well at the time to match that bug, but possibly RUclips has messed it up if they have edited some videos on the server after solving the bug

I played this concerto for my acceptance exam at the Musikhochschule Munich, the slow movement being really the most difficult because there’s no space to hide.
What I remember, though, is that I did the 1st and 3rd mvts. not as bouncy but more singing. legato if you will. Just checked the music again, and there a re few staccatos.
    Any reason?
Interesting small bass, btw. Mine was more like a Klotz.
    Thanks, and keep it up.

Why does he play in a much higher octave when the music I have is in a lower octave? Is it his choice? I’ve seen other bassists play this and they play in the lower octaves.

    • @leomeyer9537

    • @goranpiljic9362
      @goranpiljic9362 8 лет назад +7

It is written in sounding pitch, not in today's usual octave transposition. So he is playing it as it was intended to sound. Read the video description for a very detailed explanation :)

The lower octave was more common when I was learning the piece in high school, the option in F major. However, since that time, the bass community has made a big shift to playing in thumb position. Something that really wasn't touched on for me as a student (in high school) but now is common practice. So this version might be the more common piece now but 20 years ago it wasn't where I was growing up. I teach the F major, currently. Maybe once I myself learn this version, I might bring it in for my more advance students. Hope that helps. The performance was awesome!
