    As someone who has been wanting to make games ever since 1st grade and just about a month and a half ago graduated from high school - I appreciate the passion that you have put into your projects. I've been trying to "perfect" my craft by refining every last element I could use in game development, but obviously that is unrealistic. Gamedev is an art that takes mistakes: numerous ones, in fact, in such a way that the only way to learn is by failing because it isn't a concrete art form. It's an interactive display of passion, and how one developer or another goes about it varies. There is no "perfect" development strategy, and that is where the challenge comes in. What you've experienced in making your game only for it to go largely unnoticed is heart-wrenching to hear about - and there are points in gamedev where things will fail, inevitably, whether it is the arts, programming, distribution, marketing - SOMETHING will go wrong, and the best we can do is learn from our mistakes and become better. Create well, create with conviction! Best of luck to your career!

    Honestly on the graphic aspect (the only one i could appreciate in a video), it was weird at first because it reminded me of minecraft. BUT the levels look super cool i swear. A lot of details and care, the ideas sound pretty fun and overall you did a very good job for only a person. Keep going you did great!

      Yeah I agree, the minecraft style was a result of my inexperience with 3D modeling, but as the game's development went on and I learned blender, I eventually ditched the blocky style and went with a more low-poly look for the game, you can tell by the progression of the levels that they progressively get less and less blocky lol

    Well, releasing the game is already an achievement.

      Just the fact that i finished the game and released it is enough to make it worth all the time I spent working on it, it's a great feeling knowing you did your best and finished your work 😎👍

    Man when I heard you say you had quit your job and had banked everything on your games success I had winced in pain as a wanna be game dev myself working on several project. A painful lesson with game making(And honestly any form of art in general) is learning it ain’t that easy to be the next Toby Fox or Hakita in terms of popularity and sales, and it always hurts seeing optimistic devs fall into that trap. Takes good marketing, a well presented and decently polished game, good marketing, a lot of luck, and did I mention marketing haha. I’m so sorry you had to learn that hard way, but I’m also so glad it didn’t ruin you or your passion for game design, as it very much could have. You turned what could have easily been a life ruining event into a learning lesson for yourself, and also for others and that’s wonderful.
    I will say, the Minecraft style of the first in the nicest way I can say this, likely did not do it any favors promotional wise. Me personally, I was very thrown off by it, even when you had mentioned the fact it was Minecraft styled. Just because of that, any identity the game had was hard to really find just from the style being from quite literally the biggest game ever. The fact it looked like that likely had pushed away a good chunk of people, just because of the general trend of similarly styled games being mostly, well. Soulless off brand Minecraft games trying to get money by following the style. You’re game obviously not being so, with all of the features and content you mentioned showing so very clearly(50 levels is insane, I respect the dedication), along with just your mentality with the game in general. But, that might have been a likely cause a push away of a few players who had stumbled upon the game. Presentation means a lot and if you can’t stand against the crowd, that makes it harder to pull people. You could have made a great hit, but nobody wants to take the chance when the crowd you’re lumped with is just mostly soulless misses
    Now that your newer project has a style more of its own though, I’m sure it’s much more likely to catch others attention better!(especially if you market it much better than week early haha.) Releasing a beta sound like it will help a lot in both polishing the game itself, along with getting people looking at it, spread it, and also give feedback on how it plays(Player feedback is huge when making a game). Just make sure you’re not banking on the game to be a big hit to keep you financially held together like the last game haha
    I will also say, huge kudo’s for you learning everything with game making, music, sound, animation and modeling included. That is very impressive, and as someone just starting Blender I could only imagine the fun times you had. From one dev to another, I am wishing you luck

      Wow, thank you so much for taking you time to write the comment, really appreciate it!
      Lack of feedback was my biggest downfall, I have some traumatic experiences with feedback on the internet, when I was 12, a Minecraft video of mine went viral (2.2m views), and the comments were all making fun of me, calling me names, etc. Since then, I became extremely afraid of looking at comments, dislikes and even reviews of the project.
      About the Minecraft style, I'm surprised to hear so many people say that it turned them off, I thought it was a genius idea to give the game that style 😂😂😂
      I went with the following logic:
      if(minecraft.isPopular == true)
      {
      dannFox.isSuccessful = true
      }
      My passion for game development never dwindled, it has never been stronger, I couldn't recommend it more to anyone try it out, it is amazing to learn so much, good luck on your journey too bro 😎🤝😎

      @@BranfordDiana of course! Thank you for taking the time to reply as well!
      And mannn I’m sorry to hear that. Assuming the time period, the internet was BRUTAL towards people, especially kids, just for the fun of it. Everyone wanted to be a critic, but only wanted to tear down with criticism, not build up. Healthy feedback is one which has the goal of helping you improve, not just tearing you down until you realize how to make something good haha. I do get why you would be adverse to it(Hell I can get not wanting to look at comments just from looking here unfortunately), but man is feedback such an integral part of game making. Number one with game making, always make the game for you, and unless the vision just straight up sucks or you find another better vision you want to pursue for the game, don’t give it up for anybody. However taking feedback is very important for helping other players be able to get and jive with the vision you want them too hehe(It also helps with stopping players from dying a hundred billions times to something because you’ve gotten too good at your own game so you can’t balance properly first try[Totally not saying this because it happens to me all the time])
      For Minecraft style haha I completely get the mindset. On paper it makes sense but, when it comes to the artistic side of games most people are caught by things they haven’t seen much of. Minecraft style is unfortunately a super saturated field, especially by just Minecraft itself lol.
      And that’s wonderful to hear! Love seeing devs still trying their best and having fun with it all! And thank you so much
      I will say, don’t forget other social media’s! A discord is a good way to pull together a small community who is interested in the game, along with a good place to share demo’s/play test builds, screen caps, and also get feedback directly. And places like Twitter, Instagram and TikTok do allow you to have places where people can passively follow and get updates on how progress is going(Though if you’re avoiding these places for the likely sanity drain they usually cause, I don’t blame you at all, however at least having a like one of these with a brand account for the games for posting promotional stuff could help you just a bit)

    Some brutal comments on here omfg. Good luck with your next project. When you said the game is a platformer at the start of the video I had really low expectations bcs I feel like indie devs making that genre put out total shovelware. But yours actually looks decent, and unique!

    • @BranfordDiana
      @BranfordDiana  7 месяцев назад +1

      Ty hehe, platforkes are definitely saturated, there are so many devs that make them (especially 2D), and because of that, I tried to spice things up by having souls like combat, but it wasn't fleshed out due to my lack of skill and experience. In the end, the game looks generic, is not super polished, can be super difficult at times, is inconsistent in art style, but despite all that, I LOVE my game and will be forever grateful for every second I spent working in it 😎👍

    Seems YT deleted my comment maybe? Summary, nice work keep it up, but don't stick with one distribution platform only, especially one that is less friendly to indie devs than others. Subscribed and excited to see where this goes! Good luck!

    Girl, you don't really have to tolerate or even try to reply nicely to those rude comments. I know you're trying to have a "haters can't affect me" mindset, but there's no actual need to keep this negativity going, do yourself a favor and just delete them. On the game aspect, i think you've learned a lot on those 2 years, but if you want to make it a viable career, there's a lot more to do. It's a highly competitive market and you need to understand what sells, not only what kind of game in general sells, but what kind of polishment and art style people want to see, what kind of music they want to listen to, what kind of gameplay they like, etc. You projects look pretty cool, to be honest, but they lack polishment. They look much like free game projects, and in a store that has many super polished games, they don't stand out a lot. My honest advice is that since you're now working at a full-time job, you should take your sweet time and participate in a bunch of game jams, which will teach you more about the process of creating and publishing the game, outside of just the coding and modeling part. Take a year or so, polish your skills, understand the market better, don't be afraid of asking for help on a project (if 3d is hard for you, don't be afraid of contacting another person to be the modeler) and don't stop. I'm sure you'll be able to publish successful games very soon.
