Dude, the japanese dialogue goes even harder and the voice acting is super good, Shadow's voice was trembling and Vector was struggling to find the right thing to say... i really dont care for the dubs cheesy "THIS IS WHO I AM", the original's "that's my answer" is better imo.
Honestly the original was better in every regard especially since it had no juvenile swearing or the lines about THE EVIL ONE. Much less goofy overall.
This song I feel truly embodies Shadows character at his best. A confused creature left with no memories of his past, yet when he remembers over the course of his game he begins feeling immense regret and shame for actions he feels responsible for but aren’t his fault. The ARK being raided, the death of Maria, the near destruction of Earth in SA2, and only wanting to fulfill his purpose as either Mankind’s Savior or Mankind’s Downfall. He’s not an angsty rival to Sonic nor is he even a rival at all. He’s just a confused guy left with no direction, having been created for selfish goals of a scientist that wanted to create the Ultimate Savior and a tyrannical galactic overlord who only wanted the Ultimate Weapon.
I genuinely feel bad for Shadow, because he’s not his own person and he knows it. His entire existence is one where he was given no choices for his own life, no path for himself to carve. That, and the current writers of the games have horrifically flanderized his character into becoming the negative stereotype that detractors of the series think he is. That of a generic rival to Sonic when Shadow never cared for Sonic. Hell, outside of Omega and Rouge, he doesn’t have much to say about anyone else. Not because he’s a dickhead but because due to being imprisoned for 50 years and not knowing what his true purpose is, he’s just confused about himself and as a result distances himself from others as a protective instinct, as those that he built emotional connections with 50 years ago died.
Overall, he isn’t an asshole like Vegeta nor a rival like him either. He’s a poor, confused creature that has been so dependent upon the orders and wishes of those in his past that he misses dearly. Even if by the end of his game he vowed to not be concerned with past and focus on the future, he’s bound to have moments of relapse and just break down from the pain of it all.
you're absolutely right, unfortunately since 2010 shadow is apathetic and no longer shows affection towards rouge and omega, shadow was perfect from 2001 to 2008
shadow unfortunately today is seen as one who passes from the sides of good to evil, but it is not so shadow since 2006 was good and the only thing he wanted was to protect the earth and live in peace, the shadow of 2006 would never have allied with the bad guys for their own profit

The chorus is pretty heartbreaking, but the line that solidifies the sadness for me is "You made me, and I love you, but I can't change the things I've done." It's like, I can't change the fact that I'm the antagonist, but "bad guy" doesn't mean I'm a bad guy.

Odd how the Hero ending seems a lot more darker than the dark ending with how shadow loses his will to live.

@@entropy7705 Semi Hero (True), he’s not fully a Hero, he’s definitely not a villain, he’s not neutral as he knows what his purpose and morals are, but he’s just lost in the middle of it all. Being unsure is pretty scary. Plus that Dark ending ain’t too bad anyway.
This just sounds so bitter. Basically saying "I'm special. But that's the problem."
The way I see it the song is trying to depict that sort of anime hero special where yes you're strong and cool now but everyone's expecting you to live up to an impossible standard where they can trust you to solve all the huge world ending threats and save the day without complaining or failing, like if you plucked any normal person off the street and gave them the powers of superman along with all the responsibility that implies they'd probably emotionally falter under all the strain of look we have a perfect person now, we can just let them do everything.
I'm probably reading too much into it, it really just sounds like a song that's meant to sing about the specific character of Shadow and the problems he faced in the game much like in the same way a fanfic writer might pick out a song that, to them, personifies their gary stu and write the lyrics in one of the chapters.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Take Jesus, not to infinge on your beliefs, for example: he knows that he's gonna die for our sins and has prepared for it all of his life, but on the night of his arrest, he begs God to not let him go through the crucifixion. Afterwards he accepts his fate because "in the end I know, I'm the chosen one".

That... is... kind of Shadow in a nutshell... I mean it is more complex than that, but ultimately, he was made to be special, and this has, either directly or indirectly resulted in a good chunk of his life being awful.
I hit my head and damaged my nose in a fall in 2017 and lost most of my memory, I remember very few things, Shadow the Hedgehog is one of those things. This song helps me because I lost alot of my memories and it helps me to understand that no matter what imperfections you have you can be considered a "chosen one" by family or loved ones. I love this song and thank you SEGA for molding me into what I try to be today, I'll always love the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise for helping me

Losing my memory is one of my biggest fears because you'll never know that you lost your memory unless someone else told you and you would never be able to recover the lost memories basically rendering all the time you spent experiencing them wasted unless it left a lasting impact on others.

I remember when I was young and heard this song while playing the game, thought it was edgy and laughed. Soon tho times became tough, bullied at school, parents fighting, and this inferiority complex that no matter how hard I tried I would never be seen as good enough compared to anyone else. It was around that time stumbled around this song again and actually heard the lyrics, taking me time to digest.
I cried. Song isn't that profound, but it just hit me was most vulnerable. There's this melancholy in this song that we all feel regrets, apathy for life, and wish we could be someone else. HOWEVER, hidden within it, is this odd sense of hope, you are the chosen one, whether good or bad, only you can dictate your life and how it plays out in this world. It didn't change my life, but this song along with many other factors, led me to reconsider my life and ultimately not give into true despair. That crying brought forth determination and hope for a better future, I decided to be more involved in school, try to curb my social anxiety, and despite problems at home, try to focus on my own life goals in hope of a better future.
It's been years since then, graduated college, parents made up a while ago and are back to how they were before, and I never could have imagined the things I would have missed had I made a stupid decision while I was young. Sometimes my old anxieties come back and it sucks, and more hard times is the reason why I'm back here, but I just need to remember how it was back then, when I felt completely powerless and isolated, and it's the same as it was back then: I want to see what more life has to offer me, and even if I feel like the world is out to get me, I need to persevere and make it through the next day. Eventually, if you keep reaffirming your self-worth, you will reach a bright end to the tunnel.

Thank you for sharing this! And I'm glad that you've come so far! Sonic has helped me tremendously, and Shadow is part of that too, for how much he & his game resonates with me. As you can see, "edgy" really is just a term people who don't understand like to throw around. All of what you said really resonates a lot with me too and I've also found it easy to forget just how powerless and isolated I was, and even if I'm not done yet, how much more control I have now than before. I'm doing a lot better too than 2016 - hell with that year!
I’ve been in that place too. Shadow and Twilight Princess were my escapes. And they both had fantastic soundtracks that kept me coming back, rather than offing myself. I’m glad you’re here too. We’re the chosen ones.
shadow is most well written character in the series by far, a shame that most of the great storytelling that happened to shadow in his game and in sonic 06 is overlooked by most fans

@@KesslerVTuber Well yes and also no. They're not exactly plot holes per se. The whole motif of Shadow was all the routes show what he could have become, with the end being the Semi-Dark Hero ending, and the pure hero ending swaying him to be a pure hero.
06 his alliance with GUN is a symbol of him putting his past to rest and fulfilling Maria's wishes to protect Earth. By being with GUN, he gets clearance and access to more tools to fulfill his promise.
As well as Mephiles is a symbol of who shadow used to be. Hatred and contempt for humanity for creating him and then sealing him away. Even when Mephiles showed one day he would be sealed away for good, Shadow didn't care, he will deal with it when that time comes, but for then and now he will deal with the current problem he had.

Driven by such demented fantasies, he did great, awful things to so many people. Was he an accident or a weapon? Something else? It doesn't even really matter anymore. The dark fog clears yet the naked light burns worse than any fire or metal.
To wade through the rubble of your ignorant destruction whilst enlightened is a humbling, painful experience. Every twisted beam and crumpled slab of stone, every destroyed home... every limp body. He did this, knowingly, but only when he knew why did he finally know to stop.
He can't change who he is or why he is. He can't fix what he's done. He'll fight for his atonement if only out of loss of anything else he could do, but he knows the truth about who and what he really is when the cards are dealt. Good, bad, it boils down to one fact.

This song definitely defines Shadow. It tells of the semi hero that will work for anyone if they pay him right, but when it comes to it he will save the world. It also shows Shadow’s self hate and the dark personality that comes from it as he pains from his past and follows raw emotion over what would typically be described as right. Shadow is definitely the best and most interesting character brought out in any Sonic game.
This song would fit right well into a Silent Hill game. It just goes so far as to show how depressed Shadow was in the Heroic Neutral ending. I think Shadow deserves another go with a new game.

I liked the game, but after playing through the story for about the 3rd time. It got old for me, and I just couldn’t be bothered to go for the true ending
For me, the games plot is all over the place. It had so many possibilities that it just didn't know what it wanted to be.
I loved the game play, gun play was fun too, and Multiplayer was fun it is mostly solid and feels good even though shadow does slide a bit. It's definitely an improvement from Sonic Heroes.
I wouldn't call this a bad game by any means, but it not a game I come back to often, I beat it once and that was enough. It took a out of me to play the game 10 times to get the Last Story. Haven't seriously played it in 2 years. it just doesn't have the same charm as other Sonic games.

This was such a shocking song to discover for such a dark game. I'm one of those guys that can gladly embrace Sonic getting towards dark territory. As a result, I don't mind the tone Shadow the Hedgehog was going for. Oddly enough I like the game pretty alright. It was shocking going through the same world that we visited in SA2 and Heroes only to find it in such a pitiful state...and all because of our favorite anti-hero. I felt like this was what should have been a really good sequel to Sonic Adventure 2's story. Sadly, it isn't as much as it should of. But this song...just this song. It's weird for me to describe it but it's beautifully depressing music. That's how I would put it. I'm not sure why I like it so much but it just brings so much background and revelation to shadow. Very powerful and passionate. I'm glad shadow the hedgehog exists just for this song and all the game represented as an experiment for the franchise. To me, it was an enjoyable try at progressing the Sonic series.
Sonic games in the early 2000s were aimed towards a teen demographic, and honestly it should've stayed that way.
This is the way Sonic should be, and I agree 100%. I'm sick of how the series has been since Colors.

Sonic is supposed to be cool and aimed at everyone, especially teenagers or at least an age group somewhat older than Mario's audience. I just don't take the recent games seriously nowadays. Colors I could tolerate because it felt like an adventure. With Generations it was the excitement of seeing my favorite stages remastered. Lost World and Boom just revealed the new direction that was there since Colors......and it sucks.

I don't understand why people don't like this game; I absolutely love it. It has a great story and the perfect amount of dark stuff; like monsters killing people and black doom. This is one of my favorite sonic games of all time.

it was very good and fun to play i also liked the story (except when the last story made my choice irrelevant or i'm on someones side but there troops attack me anyway) in fact you don't get many high speed 3rd person shooter action platformers if they made something like this again i would buy it.
Because it has so many game design flaws, I get liking this but it really shouldn't be that hard to understand why people trash on this. This game is so damn repetitive.

most people think of the Sonicverse as a playful little place that mimics the marioverse in playful tones and silly stories. this song says different. it's this kind of music that brought a serious and real tone to the sonic world and that is what makes it so special. sonic world even though it can be funny, has had real defining moments and character development. thanks Sega :)

+Bobby D Huh, I'm not the only one. I can acknowledge it's problems, (that voice acting, game's a little floaty, story is atrocious) but it does have elements I like. I don't think it's really a good game, but I enjoy it and don't regret playing it. I'll go with that's a success.

Chosen One was, in fact,written specifically for this game by Odyssey of Mona Lisa Overdrive (formerly known as A2 at the time of release). Sega had originally asked the members of MLO for use of a song called “Broken” which was a song from their former band (Sins Of A Divine Mother). Broken was written by Wylie Beechler ( the singer of Sins). When they were unable to get hold of Wylie, Sega asked MLO if they could write a new song with a similar dark sound for Shadow. The Lyrics were then written by Odyssey based on the plot and story of the game and the specific ending story line and the music was written to capture the basic feel of “Broken” and to capture the dark melancholy emotion of Shadow’s character
This song explains what Shadow The Hedgehog is about... it is Shadow finding about his past.
Man I wish soul searching was this epic for everyone :P

Sonic X was so trashy because of it trying to tie in these two seperate worlds and shit, Sonic should’ve just been in the human world, Earth, it worked for the games it would’ve worked for the anime.
ุ ุ Well I mean, in reality they had to, think about it, do you think a blue hedgehog who bounces on springs and collects rings and runs fast would be in a normal human would from the start? Or hell a fox with 2 tails or anything in the Sonic Universe. They needed a reason to make both worlds, since if Sonic would just start in the human world it wouldn’t makes sense cartoon-wise. In the games, it makes more sense considering that back then their wasn’t much of a continuity until really the adventure series.

I like this Sonic Game and I like this song it's one of my favorites.
This sounds like 2 things.
1 - A Nirvana Song
2 - A hero who just saved something but was rejected by the things he saved
I remember getting the Vector ending on my first play through, This, Made me quiet for a while, It's the first time a song from the Sonic series ever made me want to cry.
This theme fits perfectly as neutral-hero theme since on that route's ending:

Shadow literally says that he is a experiment gone DEADLY wrong and that he shouldn't been created (sometimes i wish i was never born) and literally gets depressed after discovering that he was the one that caused the ARK disaster (and maybe he feels depressed too since, if i didn't understood bad, it was that ARK disaster that started the chain of events that led to maria dying)
Basically the song fits perfectly that route that ends up with shadow very depressed and him trying to make up for his errors even though he may never be forgiven because he's the only one who can do it and the lines that refer to that are: "sometimes i wish i was never born", "i'm the chosen one" and "you made me and i love you but i can't change what i have done" (even though the last one refers mainly to robotnik and maria and a little bit to shadow being the culprit of the ARK disaster)

The solo at 2:37 chills me everytime I listen to this theme. It's too damn good

No matter what anyone says when I got all A Ranks and all the Secret Keys in this game I actually felt more accomplished then getting all A Ranks in SA2...and the Hard Mode was totally worth it, you get to play through the entire game with every level its the main reason I come back to this game :3

Honestly, in my opinion, getting A ranks in this game was super easy. In the other Sonic games I find it WAY harder to get A ranks.
This is the saddest StH theme I know of, this is the one that basically fits ‘that’ ARK ending.
Whenever any one here is depressed, do they kind of go through their favorite songs starting with this, and then slowly raise their spirits until they put Never Turn Back and then feel instantly better? That's what I do and it has helped me put the worst time in my life behind me.
If they're gonna introduce Shadow in a post-credits scene in next Sonic Movie (just like how they presented Tails) I hope they use this song

This is without a doubt in my mind one of the best songs ever made.
WOW, I love that wallpaper. The way they rendered Shadow in this image is just so superbly well done. As your listening to this while looking at that, it makes you think of the atmosphere and action shadow went thru in his game.

A truly underrated gem of the Sonic series,i remember that played this game when i have like 11 years old in 2009,and it was really great, not only by the art or the story,if not by the different mode of game with Shadow,the tone of the story and morality decisions and for the guns,and never i was able to obtain the True Ending of this game.
This game in my opinion is the best spin-off game ever,aside of obviously: Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing sub-saga.
heading into 2024 with this song, sonic is such a good universal series for all ages whether it be the music or fast action gameplay theres something thats bound to stick with you for years and years to come and i think thats amazing
So many people work hard to make songs like these, yet so little get recognition. It pisses me off just to think about it. Also, Sonic music will always remain the coolest!

It's a shame the game itself wasn't very good, since the music is really great. Every 3D sonic game from SA1 to this had really great soundtracks. The wii/360/ps3 era games still had some good tracks but not as consistently good as the dreamcast through gamecube/ps2/xbox era's sonic games.
I think Unleashed was the last game to have a really memorable soundtrack

So many people like to treat Shadow as a depressing emo character but really this neutral-hero ending is the only time Shadow is ever actually "emo."
And even then there is at least a little context to it. To his knowledge he killed a lot of people at that point including people close to him like Maria.

This song is the best song in the game, hands down. I believe this should be Shadow's theme song. Don't get me wrong, I like "All Hail Shadow" as much as the next person, but this is so expressive in his emotions, wishes and hopes.
