Here’s what I love about your playing: it comes with incredible emotional delivery. You’ve so thoroughly and deeply analyzed such guitar legends as Michael Landau, Dann Huff, and Steve Lukather that during your demos, with your sound processing and playing, you sort of immerse the listener in the ’80s.
Thank you for another excellent video! To me, this is the perfect practical accompaniment to Rich’s introductory video on Tyler’s switching options. The tones you pull from that thing are simply stunning and truly show why we could all use a Tyler in our respective tool boxes… oh, and as always your playing is a joy to listen to. Thank you for sharing your talents with us!
That means a lot, man - thank you! And yeah, that was kinda my thinking too. Rich Renken explains all that stuff so well that I wanted to try and demonstrate everything he was talking about.
My favourite guitar channel on the youtubes..... Congrats on the new axe Rich its a beast! You have it & your tone completely dialled in & sounding oh so good, & as always your playing is sublime! Cheers mate.
That "intro performance" is fantastic! You perfectly nailed that Mike Landau feel. I will pick from it some ideas to practice. P.S. I just listened to some songs from Black Sky Research's "One" and I am right now listening to Redux : I love it !
Incredible Rich. The break into the solo section is pretty much perfect. Fantastic new Tyler. I'm sure Master Casswell would be suitably impressed. Another "proper" guitar 😉
Stunning playing as always! Super tasteful along with the technique. I recently acquired my first JT, the Huff Black Classic, and it’s hard to put down. The Free The Tone Tri-chorus on my board is working overtime!
@RichardWatson You make me want to have a James Tyler even more... all the cleans and lead tones, even with the midboost 100% up, sounded perfect to me
Great playing and congrats on that Tyler. I totally agree with you on the add bridge push/pull being hard to get to. I ended up sacrificing the middle position for it on most of my guitars, and just getting that tele split on all of them. It works for me but isn't for everyone. Cheers.
Great playing and demonstration. And yes I never liked the headstock also, but I was always intrigued by the switching possibillities. But I was also always curious about the PRS Dan Huff guitar and the Huff PU.
Congratulations on acquiring ‘Woody’ Rich. As always your playing and tone is fantastic, that Tyler really does sound amazing! I’ve even warmed to the Tyler headstock over the years.😂 Just wanted to mention for anyone wanting that 80’s Huff ‘midboost tone’ and not wanting or able to stretch to the cost of a USA Tyler. Fitting 2 Seymour Duncan hot stacks and a JB with the widely available Fender Eric Clapton signature midboost circuit (I bought mine from Anderton’s) will get you there. This requires a bit of rudimentary soldering, probably best to go to a competent tech if you also want series and parallel switching added but ‘all in’ can be done for a few hundred pounds. I also fitted Fender locking tuners and the Wilkinson WVS 130 bridge with locking saddles (now used on the Suhr Pete Thorn signature models) to one of my Strats. These mods absolutely transformed it into a great playing and sounding ‘Huffcaster’. Thanks for all of your time and effort with your excellent videos. Enjoy ‘Woody’.
Great advice, man! You can also order the Tyler midboost direct from Demeter for a reasonable price. I've seen a lot of guys building their own Huffcasters recently- which is great to see! Thank you for the kind words, man- it's appreciated!
hey rich!! you’re the man - I’m biting the bullet, gonna get the pickups changed in my strat and get some series parallel switching by going on. the main thing im worried about is this preamp situation - i’m wondering if there’s any kind of stomp box solution…so having the correct pickups and series parallel but no battery in the guitar - maybe some kind of “over buffered” signal could get this? or a BBE? thoughts?
That's, unfortunately, correct- what an incredible legacy Jim has left us. The spirit of Tyler Guitars is very much carried forward by Rich Renken - he's a great guy.
@@emdblues Yes exactly, when I’m running a clean amp, all pedals are in front with the volume pedal after the drives/before the chorus pedal. When using the Boogie live, everything after the overdrives (including the volume pedal) is in the loop.
@@bingefeller Rich Renken says it’s voiced around 100Hz; so more of a low/low mid boost. As you can hear, clean sounds get pretty “wooly” when it’s cranked past 75% but the same settings can work great for distorted, high register parts. I find myself using it all the time!
It is, indeed! But Jim's magic is in the details. From what I understand, there's a pretty exceptional level of quality control at Tyler and you're also buying into a very rich legacy (in terms of all the studio musicians that Jim built guitars for). You will get a similar experience with builders like Suhr and Tom Anderson, but they're all a little different!
As Rich Renken said, the thing about the headstock is that everybody hates it when look it for the first time but then get used to it and end up loving it! I think that description is fair enough, at least it describes me too! And I see that headstock with so much respect for the quality and the pedigree of all those session guitarists!
@@TeodoroArevalo Exactly! It's a Pavlov's Dogs thing, for me- as soon as I see that headstock, I can't help but think Landau, Huff, Shawn Tubbs... all the cats!
I used to hate the headstock but have warmed to it over the years. Regrettably, it prejudiced my decision some years ago when I declined to try out James Tyler guitars in a dealership at their recommendation. Jokingly I told them “no matter what they play and sound like, I couldn’t live with that headstock”. Hmm, wish I’d tried them way back when, they were a lot less expensive then too😊

Totally agree. Couldn't have said it better. Exquisite playing with lovely shades of Huff, Landau etc.
