- Dan runs through various options for anchoring your stationary rope climbing system in the canopy and the pros and cons to each system.
SRT - Stationary rope techniques / Single rope technique:
Within the Arboricultural industry the term SRT describes a climbing system when the climbing rope anchored in the canopy or at the base and the climber is ascending & descending on a stationary/fixed rope, meaning the climbing rope is not moving when ascending/descending.
The rest of the SRT series is available on ClimbingArborist.com Спорт
I leave the throw line connected to the tail. You can use throw line to pull rope back instead of leaving a very long tail. This method is especially good when you do not have rope long enough.
Great compilation of tie in points for single rope technique ! Thnx again Dan !!
Brilliant! I really like your videos. They are very helpful and I like your way of instructing. Clear and on point. I am not an arborist, but I am a gardener and do a bit of climbing with Ddrt in largish old fruit trees as it is now. I am longing to climb our oak at my job and remove some dead wood but I will wait for an arborist friend of mine to do my virgin climb together with him as to feel safer and learn some tricks of the trade from him. Safety first is the way I want to go and I wouldn't do the climb without some hands on instructions and help.
Keep on with your great videos!
Kind Regards from Piffen
Thanks. Looking forward for more of your videos.
Do you still use this last system shown here? I really love this SRT series you did, its so informative. Maybe you could make a short update video now after 5+ years where you summarize what has changed since this series in teams of gear and techniques you use frequently.
Thanks for that last one. Great idea to advancing...
great video, love the topic
keep them coming
Thanks for the video. Appreciate the information.
great evolution of canopy anchors
Cheers for sharing dude, I'll think i'll start using the multi sling method from now!
Great info, as always. Thanks man!
often wondered about using carabiners with a frictions saver to advance in the tree and here ya thanks !
I'm old school and had always been very comfortable with DRT. I'd be willing to try it but since I'm retired from climbing it would just be for recreational use.
Great video.
Great information, Thank you for your time.
Will Soto thanks for watching and commenting, glad it was helpful
Thanks, so much to learn.
THANK YOU.!!
In one of your other videos (with comments disabled) you tied an alpine butterfly knot very quickly and efficiently. I'd love to see a demonstration of that technique. I use the "wrap around the hand twice" technique and it it does seem a bit awkward if not inefficient.
Hi , thanks for the interesting videos, so much to learn here!
I was wondering, when you use the alpine butterfly, aren't you eliminating the possibility of a rescue in case of injury? The alpine butterfly is basically replacing your anchor at the bottom right?
Like the last idea to be able to freely advance. Great on if your coming from DRT to try SRT.
With the last one, that you use. Could you put a large carabina on the large eye of a cambium saver for the effect?
Great video, I understand placement of friction saver, but if rope is equal lengths what I don't understand is how you tie alpine butterfly and place near friction saver and still be able to retrieve? Not bringing tree down just pruning. Thanks for video look forward to more.
I know it's quite easy but the bunny ears figure 8 drives me nuts. Hard for the new guy. Just like the clove hitch is so easy it took me weeks to master it every night. Lol Excellent teaching videos! Thanks for your time.
Nice videos....
Cracking idea. I think it could be improved further by using two lengths of of rope and sandwiching them together like the linkage on a rope wrench. Either with a sewn or velcro fabric, something a bit shiny like leather, truck tarp or even an old skinny bike tyre. This will give you a slightly stiffer and much much more durable anchor to use for a long time. One that doesn't get saturated with algae, moss, bark slime and moisture every time it's used.
How do you retrieve the two last systems from the ground? You use the little balls and pull it through the cambium saver? But then you need to make sure the end you pull through is the one with the tied-in eye of the rope no?
Will the ring and knot ever slip threw the Carabiner?
Dan- do you have to worry about the small ring and the alpine butterfly being pulled through the large carabiner? This would make it hard to retrieve. thanks.
I was wondering the same?
Thanks!
Thank you so much buddy, your donation is hugely appreciated!!
Just curious where you purchase that multi-sling. I can't seem to find one like that. And where it might be applicable on a smaller limb, can you wrap the sling more than once around a limb and use it safe in that manner?
As this video is quite old now, is this still legit ? Can a big guy with a load of kit REALLY hang on 10 mm prussic cord ? I've got a hank of that line and a bunch of rings in my bag, I'm thinking of making one up. Barrel knot a ring on one end, and a figure eight knot on the other for a carabiner ?
Now that I think of it... that is what's on my hitchclimber ! But it just seems nuts to use it as a cambium saver. Is it safe life support ?
The next to the last example was the friction saver. Could you add a carabiner to the large ring. So when you pull the friction saver into the tree with your throw line the throwline will be passing through the small ring and the carabiner? Now it's the same as the last setup which is your favorite. Bingo, you now have two favorites. Carabiner should be rated and triple action of course. Unless I've missed something. Thank you
Is there a line you recommend for srt?
Hey mate, the last system you demonstrated, do you set that from the ground the same way as you’d set a cambium saver?
Hiya, could I just use my multisaver and stick a carabineer on it in place of the multi sling?
Roger Cornthwaite yes, that would work exactly the same
Hi Bro. Why you have chosen a bunny ear for the ring? Would not be a cow hitch an easier option?
On your last set up, couldn't the alpine butterfly and carabiner easily pass through other carabiner? I realize if this did happen the system would act like a choker and you wouldn't fall, but you would still abruptly drop a few feet? Just curious, thanks.
nicholas millward
they shouldn't ever be on that side of the anchor.
With the last multi sling system - would you set up the multi sling around the top branch just when you’re on top? Otherwise how would you set up the multi sling from the bottom up high?
So what do you prefer the art over the drt ???
Is it not possible just to use a cambium saver and tie s running bowline in the rings, and use that as a base?
Not quite understanding what you mean
How do you get the friction/cambian saver and or ring to ring sling up in the tree around the branch you choose and then get the rope through all from the ground ?
Mikey Hullett there is a video on our website about installing a friction saver from the ground
Hi dan, love the videos. Would you recommend a 60m or 45m rope for srt?
Thanks dude. There are a few factors like the area you live which will reflect the height of the trees etc, but I would definitely suggest 60m because you set the length of your working line, so don't have the same issues as you do climbing a smaller tree with a long rope with DdRT.
So I might be stupid, but how do you get the (last) system up in the tree?
Very curious how you mention retrieval of the alpine butterfly with a few redirects could potentially damage your rope from the friction. Is that any different from using a prusik loop for ascension descension and the wear it puts on the prusik?
Really enjoy your videos man!! Long time subscriber!
Thanks!
Lucas
Some differences: First, for a prusik loop, you'd generally use particularly heat-resistant fibers, which will withstand the friction longer than a climbing line. Second, the prusik loop is relatively cheap compared to a whole climbing rope, so you can afford to regularly change it out.
can't the small ring fit through the carabiner? if so, isn't there a possibility of it becoming girth hitched?
just watch the video and thought the same thing. if that ring and the knot can fit through the karabiners then there are some brown pants moments waiting to happen. the cabin saver and stopper knot would be my choice. personal I drt all the time but slowly coming round to the idea of srt especially on pines.
+Chris Brown With the multi sling, you can choose any carabiner, if you choose one that the ring can't fit through then there is no possibility. The way in which the force is loaded into the system I don't think the ring would pass through regardless (my opinion), but there are the other options shown e.g.. delta link & 2 carabiners and just use a retrieval ball.
+Climbing Arborist I agree it is probably not likely that the small ring would pass through, but I've had my rope tie itself around a limb just being pulled from the tree, so if there is the slightest chance, I would bet money it would happen to me lol :) Depending on the angle you are working at and the tension in the line, I could see it happening and being a real pain to go fix.
The new singing tree quickie, albeit expensive, would probably be great in this application. www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?category_id=181&item=15672
This was a great video! Being able to quickly and easily advance my tie in when climbing srt has been the biggest drawback for me and it looks like this video solved that. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Could you just use a ring and ring friction saver and clip a carabiner to the large ring and run the rope through?
I have the same question
Where can I find a multi sling with a caribeaner? Can you give me a link? Thank you
9:19 consider putting a tail on the running bowline,
Add a carbiner
Climb up and attach the carbiner to your saddle,
Now you have a double rope climbing system
Tie a pull rope to the end of the line ofter tying the bowline
6:44 how do you throw the lanyard up into the tree? thx for your good videos!
You can use this technique ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=sKEfLm066-4
This link no longer works : (
@@selbyjg Here's the correct link: ruclips.net/video/sKEfLm066-4/видео.html
Thanks! Now after this video I beat my head on my keyboard after purchasing the cambium saver with two closed rings. Seems like one ring which is able to open (or a delta) would make much more sense.. Darn it
+jodelboy Don't kick yourself, I still use a ring and ring regularly. The multi sling is a really hand bit of kit to have as an addition because it can be used for lots of different applications.
+Climbing Arborist Thanks ;) I'm glad there are channels like yours where "noobs" like can learn from the pro's. Like with everything you at first buy something and then you see what's good and what's bad and then change it (or add to it) ;) Greetings from Switzerland.
+jodelboy you could just throw a carabiner on your larger cambium saver ring and then you have the same setup haha
+jodelboy just klip a crab in the big ring
All of these methods you have to be in the tree to set up..... how does that work
Do you set these from the ground with your throw line?
+Nicholas Cox Yes, as long as you can Isolate around a main limb/fork they can all be set from the ground
I'm trying to picture how, do you end up needing a rope length 3 times the height of your TIP? Or is there some throwline trickery involved? Edit: I think I figured it out - you just tie the butterfly on the tail after the end of the rope is pulled through the rings, but before you pull it all the way to the ground.
+Nicholas Cox Check out these two videos, the first is a better video the second explains installing a ring and ring a little clearer

I can never get my friction saver up. Don't have luxury of clean branch. Always have clump to get it back down.
“And it’s the three way locking carabiner” did you mean triple action double locking? 8:10
Clove hitch your shot line to the tail end of the running bow line...just saying🤣more than one way to gittr done
I've never used an alpine butterfly, but it looks like the kind of not I'd get wrong at some point
Great vid though
What kind of rope is that?
Jimmy MacDonald Yale Hedera 11.7mm
you turned my view
keep things simple if you make it to complicated you will loose your concentration on the job, for me i prefer old skool
