    Is the poor sound quality of this video supposed to be ironic or the result of bad compression trying to reduce the background noise?

      The latter... hopefully.

      Sounds like compression artifacts or digital noise suppression not quite right, though I can hear him so it's fine.

      Not ironic. Needed to not miss a plane home, had a recording glitch and couldn't re-do the audio, then YT compression made it much worse. My apologies. -Patrick

    WOW! What's with the background noise. I was hopping more sounds from Carina all the way from Cambridge. Shure lot of talking.

    I tried the True-Fi app with mixed results. Some higher quality FLAC files came out as static. The ones that did work had more punch to the bass, but when I adjusted for age I found that the upper frequency range was sloppy and presented a hiss. It's also headphone specific, which can be a problem if you can't find similar headphones (assuming yours aren't directly supported).
    Results vary with music. Some sounded better, some worse, and some was better with only one feature. (Bass boost or age adjustment.)

    • @Tekthing
      @Tekthing  5 лет назад

      Were those hi-res FLAC files?

    • @sbrazenor2
      @sbrazenor2 5 лет назад

      @@Tekthing 24bit / 96Khz seemed to present the worst output with static. The lower quality files were ok (16bit / 44.1Khz). MP3 files were fine. I know my phone plays the higher quality files with other apps fine, so it's got to be a software issue, maybe with a bad codec or something. Perhaps it's assuming an external DAC is available? I'm not sure.

    Were there any other notable headphones? Or headphone amplifiers? For us who live in condominiums... Also, wrt SonarWorks DSP. How does it compare to the Schiit Loki tone control?

    • @Tekthing
      @Tekthing  5 лет назад

      Lot of true wireless earbuds, not a ton of new headphones. No headphone amplifiers that I know of (Check out JDSlabs Atom if you haven't seen it yet. Amazing peformance, and $99 price.) RE: SonarWorks, the Schiit Loki can bump your audio +/-12dB at 20Hz and 8kHz, +/-6dB at 400Hz and 2kHz. SonarWorks can/will mod the full audio spectrum to 'neutral,' will let you bump up the low end, and, for age, etc, the highs. They do similar things radically different ways.

      @@Tekthing I would've preferred to suppress noise as far as I could before the audio artifacting takes effect. The noise won't be distracting and the speech will still sound natural. From my perspective, the Lav mic seemed to have been set up (at least, physically speaking) properly. They're quite sensitive (understatement!) which is why I'm of the opinion some noise should be expected at expos like CES.

    1. Jesus, Norton, get a turntable already!
    2. APTx is pretty good. There can be some slight differences vs a cable, though. Soundstage comes to mind with my BT headphones in wireless mode.
    3. Did I mention that you should get a turntable?

    • @Tekthing
      @Tekthing  5 лет назад +1

      I own a turntable, Grado and Audio Technica cartridges, spent a bunch of money on vinyl LPs last year to realize that I really prefer digital. Lower noise floor, more convenient, easier to store, easy to have with me everywhere. It's cool dropping a needle on a record, - I totally get the experience - but I don't enjoy it enough to use it all the time. And the whole 'vinyl is better than digital' argument just doesn't hold water in terms of audio quality. Probably TMI there! -Patrick

    • @sbrazenor2
      @sbrazenor2 5 лет назад

      I like the idea of vinyl, but I spend most of my listening time driving (I'm a truck driver). I find that a turntable skips a lot on the terrible New England roads we have, and the crates of records are heavy and inconvenient to carry around. Digital is definitely the more convenient option these days.
      Maybe you can get back into tapes, Patrick? Get a high quality, vintage Walkman and restore it like Techmoan might. Then transfer content to some high quality tapes. I have an old Eric Clapton compilation album on type II (CrO2) tape that still sounds better than some CDs and FLAC files I have. (The tape is 24 years old, BTW.)

    • @alex_stanley
      @alex_stanley 5 лет назад

      @@Tekthing I hated the sound of CDs when they first came out, even with their lower noise floor. A couple years ago, I replaced my ancient Adcom preamp and amp with new ones from NuPrime, and digital audio is spectacular through the NuPrime's DAC. I've probably just become accustomed to the quiet transparency of digital, but the last time I played vinyl, the music was ruined for me by all the hiss, clicks, and pops.

    I find it weird that you make AMT tweeters are a new thing. The speaker manufacturer Legacy had them in their speakers 10-15 years ago. Along with GoldenEar and the Martin Logan Motion Line.

    • @Tekthing
      @Tekthing  5 лет назад

      Seeing three companies w/ AMT tweeters was new/unusual. (I shoulda grabbed snaps at GoldenEar, that would have made it four, but was told they didn't have a new product.) Never meant to suggest the tech was new, but -really- didn't want to go through the history of AMT back to the ESS (ElectroStatic Sound) speakers that launched in 1972, or the flood of Air Motion Transformers that hit after Dr. Heil's patent ran out. -Patrick

    • @stohl82
      @stohl82 5 лет назад

      TekThing, It is nice seeing them in more affordable speakers. That more people can buy them. I remember going to local dealers fifteen years ago and seeing them. Most of the time the low price was about 2K to get speakers with them.

    • @spacejaime
      @spacejaime 5 лет назад

      I first listened to the ESS speakers either in '73 or '74. It is the application of this tweeter that is new (not the design, as you are correct) - and that it is showing up en masse with a lot of speaker brands lately. Infinity's Emit tweeter was also excellent.///Cheers.

      You should hear the background noise on the mic built into the cam... actually overwhelms my voice. Mostly I should have talked a lot louder to drown the ambient noise. Was up against a 'don't miss my flight deadline,' the room was closing, plague, locusts... and had a recording glitch and couldn't re-do the audio, then YT compression made it much worse.
