I saw that you didn't back stitch...so it's not necessary on the name tags? It won't unravel? Also, it seems like your machine doesn't have a problem with the "extra folded" fabric (like ACU fabric and rank fabric folded twice in a corner making it 3 times as thick) or have you encountered problems with it?
@@skwon247 I have sewn since I was a child , as well as been a graphic artist and I recommend letting an experienced seamstress do these. Yes, thru thick part I turn hand wheel one stitch at a time. Yes- stitch backward to knot!
I appreciate the vid bro! 18 years in the military and I’m just learning how to sew. Good tip with the beer...critical to have when you’re sewing. Copy that sir.
Thanks for the inspirational video. I bought a sewing machine and learned how to do it because of this. It's way easier than I thought it would be. Kinda sad I ever paid to have my uniforms done.
Thank you for this video. It helped me not panic after having a sewing machine packed away for decades. I’m sewing name and Army name tapes on my nephew’s fatigues tomorrow. He just graduated from Basic Training. 💜😊
If this machine ever breaks, I highly recommend a vintage metal machine such as a kenmore 158 or a vintage Singer. These are typically a straight stitch and sew through many layers of jeans, some leather and are built to last. Kenmore is typically cheaper than Singer but equally a great solid machine for uniforms.
Thanks for the video. I had to sew on Name Tapes for my grandson's Civil AIr Patrol uniform. Was going to try by hand, and couldn't get a needle into the fabric. Watched your video and set up my machine using a heavy duty needle. It was so easy. Loved your tip to sew the sides down first. I was lucky that I was putting on a uniform, where I had just removed the name. Was able to match mine to the outline and stitch on.
This is such a great video. I hate having to tape my uniforms in and wait for them to be altered, when I have a sewing machine myself. After watching your video I am going to try it myself! I don't think I will risk ruining my blues though lol
A tip as well to making sure the stitches stay is put it in reverse and go back over your stitches (just like 5 stitches) this helps lock it basically.
Yeah, I still didn’t learn the locking stitch when I made this video, so I pinned a comment from someone else describing it. If I end up remaking this video (probably after I retire) I’ll be sure to add it!
Could you make a video for sewing rank on hot weathers? The flap is stitched right in the middle of where the chest rank is supposed to be. Thanks for a great tutorial!
Can you recommend a tailor that is skilled in sewing on U.S. Military ranks, insignia, qualifications, etc. I am hopeless with a sewing machine and would rather pay someone who knows exactly what they are doing.
Got a question im talking to a female saying she is serving in BaghDad but her name tag is on her left side is this normal Usa air borne division. Thanks
Mark Wallach I fold 1/4 of an inch on each side. As for the actual dimensions of the badges themselves I am not sure, but I think that can be found in DA Pam 670-1.
Quick Question: I had recently seen a lot of soldiers who have their NameTapes sewn on the back on their pants centered above the back right pocket. Is that in regulations? I can’t find anything in AR 670-1 that says anything supporting it nor against it. When I asked soldiers about it I hear from both sides saying they did it because it was required at the school they attended, but also some soldiers are saying it’s out of regs and giving my battle buddies a hard time about it. Got any advice?
It’s a big thing from prior Marines who transferred to the Army. I would also have to check AR 670-1 but if it is not in there typically any non regulatory alterations made to the uniform would be at the digression of the commander. So if whoever is complaining about it feels so obliged to, they can take it up with their commander to see if they can keep the alteration or not. I don’t think it should be an issue and think that 95% of commanders would not care about them being there.
I do not, but I’ll get one in the works soon enough. It’s pretty simple! I plan on doing one with the sewing machine and one by hand for people who get promoted in the field.
My patches on my uniform doesn’t stick to the Velcro. I finally got my NameTapes sewn on which was probably the best thing I could do, but my patches on my sleeves still don’t stick very well, and especially my American flag patch is constantly falling off. And even with my brand new set of OCP’s with brand new Velcro the patches fall off easily. Do yo have any advice to help them stick better?
Great video. As per the skills badges, would you pre-sew those as well? Would that not create two lines of stitching after you've sewn them on to the uniform? I find that the skills badges are the hardest to get right. Sorry if this has been addressed.
Sorry, just saw this. I just size it to the Velcro that is already on the uniforms. If you don’t have that available just size it to the same size as a Velcro rank that you might have.
Cant remember the specific name if I am being honest. Something around the name of Coyote Brown. If you are trying to buy online, I would recommend just comparing it to the thread color on your uniform while viewing the product on the highest brightness to show the "true color" of the product. However, if you're going to a store nearby, just take an old nametape or rank that has the thread color with you and just compare and contrast. Living overseas, that's what has worked best for me since amazon isn't as quick as it is in the states.
@@btg53189 Thanks. Every spool I saw that was essentially OCP Brown or Bagby Green had these massive spools meant for embroidery. Regular Tan and Coyote Brown are much easier to come by in smaller portions. I appreciate the reply!

Great video, thanks for putting it together. It looks like I have the same Brother sewing machine as you. Is there a specific needle you use in your machine for the thickness of all the folded fabric sewn together?
Karina Fernando a universal needle is all I’ve needed for all of my uniforms. As for the thread I’ve gone through a few different colors all polyester and they hold up great. As long as you’re not over folding the universal needle will do just fine!
Yes you can but it will add a bit more stress to your needle, so it might not last as long. I just saved all of my Velcro tapes for stuff like the IOTV and bought new sew on ones but if you’re in a pinch you can use them.
Coyote Tan/Brown or even OD Green would work. I got mine from a sewing store in Germany but you can get it at any craft store, or online there’s a lot of places on craft websites.
The army should have never went to this Velcro bullshit. I had a four year break in service and recently went back to fly in the guard. All my old uniforms from my active duty time are all sewn up but they’re too small now. So I’m trying to get my shit squared away. I refuse to wear the bacon strips velcroed to my chest.

Army Regulation 670-1 authorizes both Velcro name-tapes with pin on badges as well as sewn on badges and name-tapes.
