It's worth pointing out that Raid mod can trace back to WWII where some Paratroopers Raid mod their M42 Jump uniforms, and Vietnam where some people in MAC-V-SOG and SF raid mod their jungle uniforms.

Out of all the things I thought the next vid could be about I didn’t think it would be a sewing tutorial I’m a fashion designer and use your channel for research and it was very interesting to see you do something closer to what I do quite often in my day to day!
ever since i watched that spiritus video on field tops and when they mentioned raid tops it opened a whole new possibility for me since i like to cheap out on whatever gear i get
Mods with alice compass pouches, always keep your extra buttons, i use fishing line to sew with because it doesn't rot . Sewing 🧵🪡 a cotton M-16 bandolier across the back bottom lip of the jacket gives extra survival items storage. maybe a old school rubberized medic bag pocket with zipper and paracord draw string etc.
Comment for the algo brother. As a dude that's getting into sewing I'm enjoying seeing how much easier this project is than I made it out to be in my mind

Good info, excellent job on the Mods. I tried this and I’m not happy with the vertical sleeve pockets, I left the bottom pockets off but may use them cross draw now. Thanks for sharing and Cheers to Venture Surplus.
This is the first of your videos I have come across. I think what you do is awesome. I had no idea someone was doing these things! Subscribed for more. Loving the content.
I'm a big fan of M81 Woodland. I got an M65 Field Jacket, a hot weather BDU blouse, and an LBV 88 (enhanced). I like this raid mod stuff and never knew about it until watching your video, I might have to borrow my mother's sewing machine.
I've been wanting someone to make this video. I've been wanting to do this myself, I was going to attempt this blindly as I'm not bad at sewing but this has given me the confidence to do it!
If you want this in Multicam, and can do without the chest pockets, the Army IHWCU is excellent. A set of those, and a set of these, you’re set for the brown season and the green season.
Depending on your sewing ability, if you want an upright pocket and easier access you could add a zipper on the side of a pocket so you can access it from the top or side. Something I've seen on aircrew uniforms.
Thank you for doing this video. For a while I've been meaning to ask a friend of mine, who is handy with a sewing machine, to make a raid mod shirt like this for me. Now I can just show them this clip instead of trying to explain it all myself :)
Dude what a fricking awesome video. Showing the insight and process really helps, I tried raid modding a ABU top, and couldn't decide on how I wanted to go about finishing it. Thanks again!
This made my DAY. I am in a bit of a rut, so watching a cost effective way to both improve a (possibly thrifted) piece of clothing while both teaching and improving your own skill set was incredible! I am running to my surplus store tomorrow to get started on this side project asap!
I Myself AM 55 Years Old, having Served in the Marine Corps and Army from 1987 to 1998, with 1 Year and 4 Months in the Army National Guard ( ARNG ) and US Army Reserve ( USAR) . The Woodland M81 BDU Cammies and the 3 Pattern DCU equivalent were the Uniforms I once wore. To this very Day in 2024 , I own several Raider Modification ( Raid Mod) Cammies in that configuration. 🇺🇲🇺🇸🦅🌎⚓😈🐶🇺🇸🇺🇲🪖🎖️💣💥🔥
You should color match your velcro to the color of your uniform... Woodland top with woodland or Ranger Green Velcro... Desert tan with coyote Velcro..
Definitely want to play around with matching colors in the future. For now, I like the way black contrasts with woodland and desert patterns. Plus the loop panels will just be covered up by patches anyway.
Awesome Video! I've honestly never used my chest pockets. I'm army and wear the hot weather ocp's exlusively now but before that I used the standard ones with chest pockets. Me and everyone I work with never use them. Some guys use them for their CAC but most of us keep our wallets/phones on us at all time anyways. In the field we wear Plate carriers or our tap rigs (some guys still have a FLC and some, like me, use our own kit completely) and they make chest pockets useless/inaccessible.
That was a dope video, thank you so much brother! I am a bit of an ALICE enjoyer so I like the original BDU design, but for when I use a plate carrier I'm gonna get a few more surps to try this out! I already have the experience altering some pants that were not fitting correctly. BTW Venture Surplus is awesome, their propper Tigerstripe is great and everything else I've gotten from them has been super useful. Keep it up!
Bonus of doing the pockets all yourself is you can add additional pen or oganizer channels in the pockets. Can be any old fabric, doesnt need to be camo.
I have no idea how to sew but, I took my m81 BUDs to a tailor and made them raid mod it. I made the tailor add Crye kneepad holders on the trousers and used the chest pockets to be on the front like the G3 cut. I gave the tailor my Crye pants to the the measurements from the kneepad holders. I had two BDU jackets, so one of them was cannibalized for the top chest pockets to be used on the trousers, also the fabric was used to make the kneepad holders and the lower waist pockets were moved to the shoulders, however the pockets are vertical which I then realized was really bad... In the end I had all 4 pockets on the jacket and the vertical shoulder pockets, while I had the trousers with kneepad holders and front facing pockets on top of the kneepads. After this video I have decided to hit up the same tailor again. So for the jacket the shoulder pockets are being removed and replaced with the lower waist pockets and they will be at an angle this time, The chest pockets will be removed and sewed back on at an angle like ACU. The removed shoulder pockets are going to be sewed to the trousers on the sides of the calf. Thanks for the inspiration! Also, a lot of people that I showed my raid mod complained that the crye kneepads were not needed but from my experience they are the most comfortable kneepads out there and it's very advantageous to have especially in urban terrain. Personally I have busted my knees enough times during exercises and had the old kneepads with straps absolutely torture me, especially when you need to cover big distances.
Sick vid, going to try this. Another method you can try for sewing sleeve pockets, especially on BDUs with wide arm openings is pull the sleeve into the arm hole. This will allow you to place it flat on your machine without having to use the hemming feature and gives your freedom of rotation. Just make sure it's pinned well.
This is badass! I recently chopped up a BDU woodland to and paired it with my favorite Miller Lite T Shirt to make a drippy "Combat Top" I love this shit
just found your channel, and I can't believe you only have 15k subs your stuff is awesome! cant wait to watch all your stuff and buy gear I want but dont need
This video is a good inspiration I've been wanting to do one of these as well as a heavily modified chicom rig but this is first Update I finished both and I'm working on a tigerstripe one
I've done one myself so far, definitely had to fight the sewing machine. I put the shoulder pockets too high and I'm not quite feeling the same side access chest pockets I did (or at least the angling), but it was definitely a fun process.
I'd honestly never thought about modding my BDU shirts. I do Run & Gun comps and usually wear them because of their utility and affordability, but this opens up some new options I'd not considered. Great video and thanks for the hard work.
Super cool.. I've been thinking about this for a while. I haven't gotten a sewing machine yet so I bought a woodland combat shirt and then cut the sleeves out of a BDU. Missouri woods are like a one canopy jungle full of ticks chiggers oak mites and mosquitoes .Almost every plant has thorns with 60% humidity 90'f degrees during the day. But it's gorgeous here lush and full of critters.. lol. ✝️🇺🇲❤️💥
Love it. I have a bunch of surplus stuff on my own and this has given me some ideas and inspiration on what to do. Though I am not really sure what exactly to do. Once I get some free time and look through all the things I have...
This is your first video Ive watched and I got to say you bring a good attitude and a lot of value to the table. Im over here just trying to gain the confidence to shorten the sleves on my brushstroke top. Hand sewimg all the way cause Im poormaxxing 😂
Good sewing job, cool channel. Its funny to see a kid interested in this kinda thing who's young enough to be my son (smile) I raid modded my jackets over 20 some years ago when it first became a thing. Now that I'm out I actually prefer wearing camo sweats which are cheaper, non restrictive most importantly is quieter compared to BDUs.
@KitCreep You could also velcro the chest pockets on the outside so you can access the same side but without angled pockets. This allows access with chest rig in place. Provided you dont have a large cumberbun on your rig.
This is pretty sick if you’re completely broke and need a decent uniform. But you can used OCP tops for less than 50 bucks used these days. This is awesome to see the evolution of the uniform.

Modifying gear, be it practical or just to save time when doing stuff is so fun, when I was in the Dutch cadet program I modified my pants by putting a piece of elastic string in the bottom of them to safe time when rolling them up.
