I love this.. I have tons of military surplus and I have sworn by it amongst all the haters..!! Of course all the haters keep buying new gear every year or two because their ultra lightweight shit falls apart under stress, and 35 years later I still have all my original gear.. just saying..!!! Keep them coming Dave..!! Parts 3, 4, 5 ,6, 7, 8, 9, and 10..!!
Most definitely a part 3 and 4, I'm a late 90s thru 2016 Vet that has a collection of gear and surplus and a Cantabury follower!!! Love the videos Dave.
Thank you for the new videos ! A modification that I have done to my Sustainment Pouches is to use a seam ripper to gently remove the plastic D-Rings from the sides and then slip them over the top two Molle straps and either just snap the strap closed or then just stitch the flat part of the ring to the bag material at the top with the strap still inside of it providing support . This then keeps the bag from flipping over when you attach a common utility-2qt canteen type of strap to it when when the rings are on the sides and the bag gets top heavy . It turns the whole thing into a more useful musset type bag that you can either use independently for gathering goodies , a stand alone day hiker and still attach to a pack . Hahahahaha I had to edit this post as I just watched your 1st video and saw what you did to your 1-qt canteen pouch , same thing ! 😂
The military mess kit is in my top 5 as well. I have one for each of my family of 5 for camping and what not. A couple of weeks ago my church took all of the teenage young men on a week long camp out, and one of the requirements was to bring your own mess kit. I let one of them borrow one of ours since he didn’t have a mess kit, and he absolutely loved it compared to the Boy Scout style kits that everyone else was using. For those that don’t know there’s an old GI trick where you cradle the lid on the handle with the ring securing it in place in essence turning it into a 3 compartment dining tray.
I liked the gear you presented in parts 1 and 2, but had to laugh when I saw you hold up a military pocket knife and say "There's no way you're going to destroy this thing," remembering the only one I ever had - it lasted exactly as long Ranger Class 8-78. It was probably a 1974 or 1975 model like yours, and the back piece that locks the blade open broke on my last patrol. After that I went back to my Tinker Edition Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, the brand I’d carried before and have carried ever since (no, it hasn’t been the same actual knife!). Sorry Dave, maybe I was too tough on mine, but yes, you can definitely ‘destroy this thing.’
I'd love to hear about more stuff, even if it's more difficult to find. You never know when you might happen upon something in a surplus shop, so having an idea of what to have an eye out for would be tremendously helpful. Thank you for everything you share!!!
I use a Sustainment Pouch as a Mini Ruck on my Plate Carrier. I can use it to carry extra Magazines, or anything else I want to keep with me, and even use it as a 24 hour Patrol kit. One nice thing, is they're usually one of the least expensive surplus items you can find. So I bought several when I got them.
Love my old alice pack. Three day camping trips, going to the shops or out with the kids absolutely perfect! Tried newer bags like the osprey bags nothing carries heavy loads or keeps your back from getting sweaty quite like it.ATB👍👍👍
A cool thing with having that adapter is if you had a molle pouch for your dirty water container, you could attach it to the side of your backpack (like the scout pack) upside down and let it drip right into your canteen in your side pocket while you're walking
Yes, for all parts going forward, I actually have the 1965 pocketknife and very proud of it. it was my first knife before i even got into the Cub scouts.
Thanks for more informative video Dave. Love them, and so did my Dad. Picked up an East German Assault pack yesterday for a deal - strichtarn pack for my landrover kit 👍
Might as well do the entire series. Sad that we can't get the gear, but learning is valuable in itself. Perhaps we can find something modern that is available as a replacement?
Love this must have a part 3. I put on a mountain warfare course three weeks or so ago. I used the old Alice pack, my 2 - 2 quart canteens, some old m81 woodland tops and an old tiger stripe top. Our old pants suck compared to other stuff out there. So, I use Magellan’s super light weight multi stretch pants that are less than $30 from Academy. Literally, I threw away all of my other pants and blue jeans, and replaced them with these pants. The crotch blows out but is easily resown. Between those, my Vertx pants, and my Cryes…that’s all I use. I will be trying to some other brands, but for now that’s all I use. Dave, you actually inspired me to think like a 1800s frontier’s man and mesh that with my years in the Marine Corps, contracting and Police experience. My buddy is an avid ultra light back packer and did the AT and other places, I think he said he has 6,000 plus recorded miles from west coast and east coast mountain ranges and trails. So we’re trying to find a way to be a light infantryman again but not lose our modern tactical gear. Great videos brother, God be with you
When I was a kid, my dad had a metal canteen (may have been 1 qt) and it was covered by green canvas . The water tasted so good and cool from that canteen. I don't know for sure but he may have gotten while he was in the Air Force. Wish I had that canteen!
Military surplus is my favorite and I have lots of it. Have three of those military Molly waist packs. Get them at the big flea market for 15$, can’t beat that! Really enjoying these military surplus videos, thanks Dave, looking forward to the next one
I'm a million miles from being as prepared as you Dave. Just wanted to say how much I've been loving the Sawyer filter, especially this summer with how I've used it to travel way lighter. The perfect, flexible filter system, if you ask me. I'm going to look into that canteen.
Great video series Dave. I enjoy using & collecting vintage military gear. It's made to last & still affordable. I agree with you , It's getting harder to find genuine surplus items. I'd like to see a video of the large Alice pack & a four day cold weather load out. Thanks D.
Couple of notes. The sustainment pouches readily attach to the sides of a medium Alice Pack. The Molle II Buttpack also holds precisely one military poncho and liner. I use the chemical suit bags to carry a light weight sleeping bag which I supplement with the poncho liner whenever I find myself camping out of a backpack.
I always use a large ALICE ruck, over the years I have really come to love the frame, after staying long periods of time at a winter campsite (trapping season) in the mountains firewood supply gets further from camp while trying to establish a wood pile for the whole month. The ALICE frame, combined with a pair of M1945 suspenders helps freight the wood back to be piled high and dry for the tent stove.
Good morning Dave, great videos on military gear. Definitely yes on making videos 3 and 4. I am the happy owner of a good deal of military gear but always looking for more. The 2 quart canteen has always been one of my favorite means to carry water and rest my head on. I've eaten many meals out of my GI mess kit. I thank you for the new ideas for ways to use this and other gears. You are very knowledgeable and an excellent presenter.
I literally have everything you have shown in this video, but I also did 21 years in the Army from 03-24. All good items but also some more are the newest issue of tents the litefighters and the medium ruck.
Yes please to a part 3 and 4! When I get to the US I think I am coming home with a suitcase of US surplus as it so hard to get in the UK at sensible prices.
I got one of those 2Qt. canteens from the surplus store years ago just as a water source for my morning walks. Still have it, easily one of the best investments I've ever made. Pouch in lined, has a strap and tablets pouch, plus you can attach it to anything with ALICE clips or MOLLE straps.
Yes absolutely a part 3 I am a very big advocate of military surplus. In my opinion there is no better gear than that it's tried a true and battle tested gear.. I'd say it's getting really hard to find the woodland camo in surplus then it is in ACU or coyote brown and people want ridiculous prices for the gear...I have 3 Alice packs 2 in OD green and one in woodland but it's a radio pack where the top lid splits about a 1/4 of the way up the lid for an antenna and the Alice pack is my big out bag that lives in my car. Thanks Dave for the informative video and yes to part 3, 4 and 5 lol. nice job
My favorite pack getting some love! Another favorite piece of surplus gear for me would be the old pilots flight bag. I’ve got several, and you can store so much gear in them!
I have seen "softer" 1 quart canteens. They would allow you you to squish the air out and prevent sloshing, but they were made out of material much heavier than the 2 quarts. The bottom of the canteen is about as solid as a normal 1 quart canteen. Mine is marked on the bottom, 2 US 2002 H.T.F. with the usual For Water Only, etc, etc on the front. I've haven't seen many of them. There is also a wide mouth version of the 1 quart that takes standard Nalgege caps. Apparently a mostly USMC cold weather item ,also a scarce item to find. The old Viet Nam era 5 quarts bladders are still out there, new in the box. Great series, grab the good stuff when you can!
Dave, Would absolutely vote for a part 3. When growing up I always bought my camping gear at the surplus store cause it was cheap but indestructible. One of the pieces I wish I would have kept was one of the old wool sleeping bag liners. Also regarding the old “butt-packs” there was a set of “H” suspenders that allowed you to attach a butt-pack to the cross piece of the “H”. You could still put one down low too.
Excellent video and I really like how you think outside of the box. There's absolutely no reason that Sawyer, MSR, and the other major manufacturers of handheld, portable, backpacking water filtration/purification devices shouldn't have various adapters available for sale that fit all the common military canteens and commercial water bottles/canteens in use for backpacking, ultra-light hiking, bushcraft, survival, and SHTF scenarios. That none of these companies has such adapters for sale just shows how short-sighted they are as well as how parochial their thinking processes are. Nearly every company in the outdoors space wants to sell *ONLY* proprietary equipment with no abilities to mate up with anyone else's gear.
Absolutely loved to see the part 3 and 4. Love to see all of your .... everything....! Wait!!!! That didn't come out right! 😅😅😂😂😂 you know what I meant!😂😂😂😂😂
Yes on part 3 because if I do see something obscure I want to know what it is I'm looking at so I don't pass it up. Even if I never see them I still enjoy the history lesson
Hey Brother. It's hard to beat Military surplus gear. I own quite a bit myself. I am gonna get a sleep system again soon. I have a large Alice pack and a medium Alice pack, both are rigged out in the "Hellcat" modification with the MOLLE shoulder straps and waist belt. They definitely weren't as comfortable back in the late 80's when I was in the Marines. Thanks for going through this gear. Reminds me of the things that I need to get again.
I still use my ALICE Pack & frame, a mussette bag, an ammo bag, and rigger's pouches on my LBE. I can mix and match depending on what I am doing as well as the planned duration of my trip.
I was a US Army soldier from '86-'90. I wasnt issued the two court canteen, but I did buy one in the PX and use it in the field-- With the sling-pouch it came with I found it far superior to those heavy ones on my belt
The military mess kit is an awesome piece of kit. It's heavier than most commercially made kits, but it is well worth it, as it's darn near bomb-proof. Same with the utensils - heavier, but strong and tough. Those things will last a few lifetimes (or maybe more). Also, I would love to see a part 4. Semper Fi! (Edited for spelling)
Thank you for your views I appreciate it!
I vote yes on Part 3! Thanks.
Yes, please to parts 3 & 4! Thank you for doing parts 1 & 2!
Yes please, part 3 and 4
I love this..
I'd love to see the more obscure items!
Please we need Part 3 and 4. Thank You.
A big vote on part 3 and possibly more of you're willing. Thanks Dave. God bless and stay safe.
I also vote YES on a part 3,4,5,..... as far as you can go. Love your videos Dave, keep them coming.
Woodland sustainment pouches. Love them.
Most definitely a part 3 and 4, I'm a late 90s thru 2016 Vet that has a collection of gear and surplus and a Cantabury follower!!! Love the videos Dave.

I love surplus gear. Alice, assault pack, sustainment pouch, MMS, canteen pouch, all purchased in the last year. Thank you for another great video 😊

Yes to more knowledge. I appreciate you taking the time to show the different gear that is available.
I vote for # 3.
Thank you for your educated opinions.
I'm looking forward to a part 3 & 4. Thanks for your time and efforts.

I say yes to keeping these videos going.
Yes, for all parts going forward, I actually have the 1965 pocketknife and very proud of it. it was my first knife before i even got into the Cub scouts.
Thanks for showing us even more possibilities of gear, all while looking out for our pocketbooks.
GENIUS on the adapter for the 2 quart canteen!
Dave…as an instructor you know the power of information. The power we get is when your information, is given in its entirety. I vote for Part 4.
Love this must have a part 3. I put on a mountain warfare course three weeks or so ago. I used the old Alice pack, my 2 - 2 quart canteens, some old m81 woodland tops and an old tiger stripe top. Great list again Dave. Those 2qt canteens are awesome. I'm up for a part 3 and 4 for sure.
Nate
I second parts 3 and 4. Even if unobtainable, it's beneficial to learn about these items.
When I was a kid, my dad had a metal canteen (may have been 1 qt) and it was covered by green canvas . The water tasted so good and cool from that canteen. I don't know for sure but he may have gotten while he was in the Air Force. Wish I had that canteen!

Excellent idea lists. Very helpful, do have a suggestion.... I added molle 2 shoulder and waist belt to my Alice frame.
I picked up two of the 3 bag sleep systems & other surplus items from a Veteran's Stand Down, when I was homeless in Montana. They're fantastic.
Dave, thank you for the videos. I love surplus gear and I am a collector as well. I would love to see a part 3 to this series.
Please keep this series going Dave!! Love it!!
Yes, please on the additional videos. Great stuff here! Keep it coming and we’ll keep watching.
PLEASE PLEASE by all means....keep making as many military surplus videos as possible!!!👍🏽
I'm a million miles from being as prepared as you Dave. Just wanted to say how much I've been loving the Sawyer filter, especially this summer with how I've used it to travel way lighter. The perfect, flexible filter system, if you ask me. I'm going to look into that canteen.
Yes part three. I love seeing the gear in hand because some I'm not familiar with and really can't picture it dimension wise
Thank you for your videos. I've been watching for years... Please continue to keep making them.

Absolutely down for a part 3, and however many more you can do after that Dave!!
Part 3 and 4 will look forward to seeing more of your videos thank you
Good Evening Dave ! You can also fit a complete Improved Combat Shelter in the waist pack. Minus the poles & stakes, put in Pack. TAKE CARE..
Thanks Dave! Been loving mil surp since the late 70s. I would love to see parts 3 &. 4.
My favorite pack getting some love! Another favorite piece of surplus gear for me would be the old pilots flight bag. I’ve got several, and you can store so much gear in them!
Thank you Sit for some more valuable content. Cheers from Canada
Great video! I use a lot of that gear still, so good to know I’m not alone. Would love to see part 3.
Definitely do parts 3 and 4!
Thanks for the Great video Dave. I vote for as many videos as you would like to share about military surplus gear. 👍🏻👍🏻
I used my mmss during the winter storm and blackout that Texas had several years ago. Never thought I’d need it to sleep in my house. Kept me warm

Yes Dave, please do the hard to find/might be gone surplus stuff!
I would appreciate as many of this type of video as you can produce! I own some surplus, but almost all of these would be a great addition to my kit.
Thank you. I already have some of these things. I would love to have 3 or 4 more episodes on this.

Appreciate the videos. Part 3 would be great if you have the time
I enjoy them very much. Keep them coming.
I must give a big shout out to the British Army reversible softie jacket and trousers. A must buy if you can get your hands on them 😊
thanks Dave and yes please do part 3 and part 4
Yes on part 3 because if I do see something obscure I want to know what it is I'm looking at so I don't pass it up. Even if I never see them I still enjoy the history lesson
Keep bringing brother!
Definitely a part 3 and 4! Keep them coming
keep op the good work i love this info what you are sharring whit us.
Yes do a part 3 and 4....thank you
Hey Brother.
Dave ur the bonus. Ur awesome.
Yes, Dave, tell me more. I think that Military Surplus are the best gears for the Backcountry.
My favorite is the Danner Men's USMC Rat 8IN GTX Boot in GORE-TEX. Purchased for 70$ and love them. Had to buy a second pair as a backup 👍
Great info Dave, I would love parts 3 & 4 because surplus suits my checkbook.
Yes to part three. And yeah on the mess kits. Mine are both from 67
Great video Dave, and a big yes to parts 3 and 4 from me. Thanks.
I have a 5 liter collapsible water bladder, I found in a military surplus store. My mess kit is stamped 1957. Yes part 3 and 4.
I still use my ALICE Pack & frame, a mussette bag, an ammo bag, and rigger's pouches on my LBE. I can mix and match depending on what I am doing as well as the planned duration of my trip.
I think it’s a great idea more information is always a plus
Yes, make part three and four!!!!
Hi Dave, I vote yes also on more of these videos. Thank you.
Dave we'll take as many parts as you want to put together. 💪🇺🇲
I have several of the items you have shown in this video I actually own 4 . I have a bivy cover but no sleep system
yes would love to see more
I was a US Army soldier from '86-'90. I wasnt issued the two court canteen, but I did buy one in the PX and use it in the field-- With the sling-pouch it came with I found it far superior to those heavy ones on my belt
Yes, I am interested in Parts 3 & 4 as well.
Hey Dave the carrier for the 2 quart canteen fits the Swedish stainless mess kit with the alcohol stove check if it fits your version
Part 3 please. Maybe about an entrenching tool, maybe a military surplus tent! Thank you
