A couple of things that would have been worth noting in the video or in your description section... would be the thickness of the acrylic, and what number sand paper grit you used....Also an annotation link to the video of the amazing PC desk shown in the intro... I couldn't find it in your Garage playlist for some reason... I didn't read every single comment here so don't know if this stuff was already brought up. Regardless...the vid still got a thumbs up from me...;)
arkatub its not really about the tool and the cut but having a guide to keep the cut straight using the wood template allows you to get a CNC style cut.
You have many PC cases with windows for sale like where I purchased my Thermaltake case at newegg. Besides you have to own a tool to cut. Save money and your bodily well being by buying a windowed case. If you do cut, remember, "Measure twice, cut once". Please wear gloves. This is really too much trouble.
Cut in clockwise motion with the router? wrong it's anti clockwise. Clockwise makes the Router want to kick out, anti draws it against the work surface, also that i'm aware of i've never came across a metal working Router bit. Skip the whole Router part and just file the edges whilst the panel is in the jig,
Dinxsy You are incorrect. The shaft spins in a clockwise direction (if viewing from top down) and you want to move the router in the clockwise direction around the hole so that it digs into the material. If you move the router counter-clockwise it will jump around. That would be called "climb cutting" and can be dangerous. The bits we use are a high quality carbide with top bearing. Carbide will cut any metal without the use of a coolant but does not last as long as when used on wood projects. This is a video about using a router to do a window, not how to use a file on a window, but maybe in the future they will do one.
BSMODS Counter external, clockwise internal, thumb & forefinger rule. Not gonna lie didn't actually watch the video, skimmed over. Also Climb Cutting only really applies to wood to eliminate tear out and leave better finish, yet still not worth the risks, i know all too well the dangers of pulling work surface from using a stacked Rail & Stile bit setup on unsecured material at work. Dual direction spiral cutting bit would eliminate the folding/burring of the tin, basically like a flute end mill, but the average hobbyist won't want to pay £100 plus for a single bit.
I have a rosewill thorv2 and i really wish it had a case window but there is a 230mm fan on it and I don't really want to sacrifice the airflow for visuals especially since the case is not on my desk #firstworldproblems
Warriorheart I don't have hands on experience with that case but after reviewing it you should not need that fan on the side with the right fans and CPU cooler. Ive found that side fans tend to recapture exhaust heat and dump it on your GPUs. That case would look good with a window the shape of the side vent.
Henry Chan The product he used holds better than contact cement. And it stays flexible. It's the best stuff out there. It's made for doing automotive work and takes the place of gaskets on almost everything. Once you try it you will never use anything else. Be warned though... it seems to get everywhere when you start playing with it.
Majin Susangz Like my Antec 900, already has a great window, but I still loved the video it'll make for good reference if I ever decide to do any DIY case building.
Once you had to have a router template just lying around you totally lost me on this "quick" DIY. Does the two hours include the time to create the router clamp? If not, you really should indicate an accurate time.
Pete Jones True but this video is all about cutting a window. This method will also allow you to cut a factory window much bigger to show stuff like water cooling that might not be visible on a factory window.
So he is using about $500 worth of tools to put a window in a case that cost a little over $100. Makes no sense to me when Antec can sell you a windowed side panel much cheaper then that.
I loved the tutorial till the part he used glue to stick the window to the case Such a horrible finish! So much work on the metal and the last part "glue"
Jose Jimenez Would you rather use duct tape? lol.....If you ever used the stuff he used then you would know it isn't just glue. It's not cheap for a reason.
Bob Stewart he could do clips like the on this pictures with the whole piece of metal he cut from the case, and would have been better and wont cost more! scontent-mia1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xft1/v/t1.0-9/11742723_860883227337974_3936574646639866532_n.jpg?oh=152bfa4542b187f2ef195ca6857dc264&oe=564DDED8 Just saying!
Material Cost rating: $ / Equipment Cost rating: $$$$
Soo true XD
you should paint the cut edge of the side panel black before attaching acrylic
visionisscary I noticed that too. Could have used the sharpie or similar maker to hide the bare edges.
visionisscary Yes, you are correct. We did take it to get professionally powdercoated after the shoot.
NVIDIA Picture/video of it professionally powdercoated or it never happened
***** This series is a six-parter. You will see the final build eventually.
I said the same thing before he adhered the plexiglass to the side panel.

That's a great touch to have the Phil Scholz Memorial Foundation T-shirt!
Phil was a huge part of Nvidia and our local LAN party! - Rod
I believe is cheaper to get a factory windowed case or just go the rough way. Maybe adding a fan slot on the window would be interesting.
Dude, the Antec ninehundred is a classic tho.
heheherh
Nice, just in time for me cutting in my Lian Li p80n Armorsuit.
Hey! I saw this guy on Linus Tech tips's Scrapyard wars this year!
What applies to this case can apply to any case.
Reppin' the safety Gunnars
Dude that is awesome
I've always wanted to do a case modification. Damn living in an apartment has a lot of setbacks.
I use a Cooler Master HAF XB! :D
Also I have a crappy old Medion case I am gonna use for a Godavari build! ;)
Did he said 4 GTX Titan blacks both sides. Like 8 Titan blacks?
The case has to full computers.
The case has two full computers.
No U-Channel for the edge? C'mon guys, thought we were professionals here :)
I have an R9 295 x2, am I allowed to watch GeForce Garage?
I wish there was a purchasable window side panel for Corsair Carbide 400 R.
Great video guys Loved it! Now to see what case modding tutorials AMD have oh wait... they don't..
josiahct Kinda stupid comment.. none of the Nvidia personel did this. It was 3rd party member and Nvidia just published the video "as their own"
Hey i've got a question. Does a fx 8350 bottleneck an 980ti ???
If your getting a 980ti I would get something like a 4790k or at least i5 4690K
Is there an easy way of replacing the acrylic window on my Fractal Define R4 with glass?
Michael Rahmani I'll look I think I have an R4 at home you need to be able to have a good flush mounting surface
My Antec 900 case came with an acrylic windows already in it. Does this 900 not?
would a dremmel with a diamond disk not give you a smoother cut?
arkatub its not really about the tool and the cut but having a guide to keep the cut straight using the wood template allows you to get a CNC style cut.
pro tip: use a razor blade or such repeatedly on the side panel to create a much cleaner cut.
What about a rubber trim for the metal edges. I don't trust myself to make a clean straight edge like he does. lol
What model is the router please ?
110v or 220v ?
Wow all the safety gear, I thought this was a case window not a nuclear reactor lol.
I have had the same case for years, but mine came moded.
He made the Mad Max case with Luke, cool.
Mad Max was such a fun build!
hmmm been doing this since the 1990s ....didnt think this was hard...
Where i can buy the window?

Rob is OP at this. I could never bring myself to do this to my case, let alone give myself permission to use powertools.
AeroKitsune This is Rod....YOU CAN DO IT!
What about laser cut?
Cut in clockwise motion with the router? wrong it's anti clockwise. Clockwise makes the Router want to kick out, anti draws it against the work surface, also that i'm aware of i've never came across a metal working Router bit. +fliesenfuzzi Advise from a guy that didn't even watch the video....good stuff
"Now you can see all your kickass hardware."(8:21)
*Has gtx 670*
I have a rosewill thorv2 and i really wish it had a case window but there is a 230mm fan on it and I don't really want to sacrifice the airflow for visuals especially since the case is not on my desk #firstworldproblems
Warriorheart But you can make new screw holes for the fan on the acrylic ;)
***** true but would look stupid, imo. Little tiny bit of glass to see past and a mega ugly fan filling the rest of it.
Warriorheart I don't have hands on experience with that case but after reviewing it you should not need that fan on the side with the right fans and CPU cooler. Ive found that side fans tend to recapture exhaust heat and dump it on your GPUs. That case would look good with a window the shape of the side vent.
My antek 900 has a side window?
So Does mine....
why not just stick the acrylic onto it with a strong glue?
Henry Chan The product he used holds better than contact cement. And it stays flexible. It's the best stuff out there. It's made for doing automotive work and takes the place of gaskets on almost everything. Once you try it you will never use anything else. Be warned though... it seems to get everywhere when you start playing with it.
And really important..protect your lungs ;) You'll need them in the future:))
Would have like to rather see a glass replacement tutorial.
Clement Kirton Glass works pretty much the same just get the glass cut to size at a glass shop. Then sand the edges so it will bond with the case!
lol i actually have an Antec 900 but im using that case for a dfferent pc
or just buy a case with a window...problem solved.
And cost less.
Majin Susangz True but this method is pretty good if you for some reason want to make custom looking window
Majin SusangzLike my Antec 1200
Majin Susangz Like my Antec 900, already has a great window, but I still loved the video it'll make for good reference if I ever decide to do any DIY case building.
Some people like to mod things. Not everyone buys their stuff built.
Lets get kraken
sponsored by NZXT
For those of you that don't have such tools. Just buy a better looking case with window. :)
measure twice cut once
why not just buy a case with a window in the first place?
Beastwick And 8 months later my comment gets a reply. Yippee!
heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeello
reallycrappyusername and in 11 months I get yet another reply, god they're coming in quick!
Once you had to have a router template just lying around you totally lost me on this "quick" DIY. Does the two hours include the time to create the router clamp? If not, you really should indicate an accurate time.
As funny this sounds, Rod reminds me of Thomas Haden Church... go look it up...
This is only convenient if you have all of those tools otherwise it's better to buy a case w a window.
Pete Jones True but this video is all about cutting a window. This method will also allow you to cut a factory window much bigger to show stuff like water cooling that might not be visible on a factory window.
this guy both looks and sounds like he dosent want to be there XD
Please get back to making GPU Chips. The only thing you guys are good at at the moment lol
So he is using about $500 worth of tools to put a window in a case that cost a little over $100. Makes no sense to me when Antec can sell you a windowed side panel much cheaper then that.
Well obviously u also have the tools for other needs, not just applying a case window...
Holy molly those tools are expensive af. Better buy a new case instead
Pro tip.
When rotating operating power tools, DO NOT use gloves!
Materials cost $
Tools cost $$$$$$$$$$
Please, add russian subtitles. )
I loved the tutorial till the part he used glue to stick the window to the case

Just saying!
GTX 670 loooooooooool
"titan blacks"
uh, pretty sure its titan x's... smh nvidia rep. doesn't even know his own cards
ancapistan Nope, we're pretty sure they are TITAN Blacks.
NVIDIA With 3.5 gb of VRAM
ancapistan TITAN Z's are duel TITAN Blacks...
+NVIDIA why wouldn't you use the Titan X?
+NVIDIA why wouldn't you use the Titan X?
It looks BAD.
