No, that would be Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca.” The chemistry is unbelievable. “Casablanca” is a much better film than “Titanic” (which I did enjoy a lot). The biggest failure in “Titanic” and the major strength in “Casablanca” was the script. “Casablanca”’s script is one of the greatest ever, with memorable line after memorable line. “Titanic”’s script was so weak that it became the first film since 1965’s “Sound of Music” to win Best Picture without a Best Screenplay nomination (Original or Adapted). You take that boat away and the CGI, and ‘“Titanic” becomes a little less impressive. “L.A. It should have won. Instead, it got 2 lousy Oscars. I saw “Titanic” when it first came out, and I was floored by it. 20 years later - less so as the storyline is weak, and the script is just dreadful. Sorry - but that is just my opinion. You folks who think otherwise are certainly as correct as I - our opinions are so so important, and I applaud you if you love “Titanic.”
I agree! Brilliant casting choice, especially Kate Winslet. She didn’t fit the mould of starlets of that era, and this made her career. @Jasmine N. Really? So Kate had to end up doing the screen-testing with Sisto instead? However, Cameron implied that DiCaprio did his screen-testing with Winslet anyway. I am curious about that.
@Jasmine N. Nice. Cameron should show the screen-test of Winslet with DiCaprio now or in the near future. Would love to see it. Yes, I knew Cameron was hesitant about picking Winslet, because, she was English and he was looking for an American. Not to forget, he was looking for someone who was kinda similar to Audrey Hepburn in appearance, but Winslet was obviously more round and curvy. Nonetheless, he was enjoying Winslet's commitment and dedication. And that is the reason why he hired her. Excellent choice.
@@monkeybrown5218 Wrong. That is Jeremy Sisto. An accomplished actor in his own right. A screen test is not only just used for one actor on one audition. Screen tests are also used to measure chemistry between actors being considered for different roles. Obviously, Leo had better chemistry with Kate.
***** IKRRRRR But she basically looks the same now, so that was a benefit omg. WHEN YOUNG PEOPLE get cast in huge roles like this 😭😭 It must be so exciting
NANCAY WANG Haha yes that's very true she hardly seems to have aged. She must have seemed older to me because I was about 8 or 9 when I first watched this haha.
Anna-- I heard it somewhere in the media, perhaps their calculations were a bit off. Wouldn't be the first time the media was wrong...but 20 years old isn't much different.
God, Kate is so beautiful. Her features look like she would fit absolutely perfect in this time era. Her skin is gorgeous!! SO glad they made her hair brighter and RED
The male actor is Jeremy Sisto (who played Elton in “Clueless,” among other things). He is not just here to feed her lines for her audition. He has talked in interviews about auditioning for Titanic and how heartbroken he was to lose the role to DiCaprio.
He seems to be speaking very softly and almost mumbling - I can barely understand him. That made it hard for me to stay engaged. They seemed to be at two different intensities or levels or something.
@@rogerbarrett5398 Also played Ceasar in the 2002 film Julius Caesar. Great movie to watch as well. And of course I thought he played a badass cop in Law and Order.
during the scene that made the movie, you never get the feeling that Jack is flirting. He likes her and respects her. He is interested in freedom and stands in life with light feet. This scene gives a feeling of him flirting and he seems to eager.
Kate Winslet is one of those women that are just "classic"as in you could plop her in probably any century and she would have been stunning in whatever time period of world history. She is in our movies, but she could have also appeared in Renaissance paintings..
Stones Fan I see what you mean, but there are a ton of movie stars that you could say the same thing about. You could put Scarlett Johannson as an Egyptian pharaoh's wife or an alien sex slave in 2599 and she'd be admired regardless.
I love how kate developed the character from this screen test. The accent she ends up using is so much better and her more shy reserved body language fits Rose's character a lot better too. This version of rose is a bit too brash and confident for a nineteen year old upper class woman about to be married off against her will
He's so serious. Leo actually made everything funny. When I watch this scene with Leo, I laugh, because of Leo's facial expressions and Kate's portrayal of Rose's frustration. But here it doesn't have any humour. And I can barely hear him lmao
I think Leo captures the youthful spirit that was supposed to be portrayed. Rose and Jack are young in the movie and especially given Jack’s lifestyle I think it suits him to be more free-spirited and have a lighter outlook on life
Man, she’s good. I don’t think anyone else could have played that role so perfectly. At only 19! She still has the ability to play every role perfectly. Such a talent. Jeremy Sisto isn’t half bad, either. He’s a bit too calm for this role, though. Leo’s early nervousness and feelings of being out of place were more evident. That and the fact his joy and enthusiasm were unbridled probably sealed the deal. He did an absolutely beautiful job in the part.
Sisto is horrible and not for this part! Unfortunately he plays better roles as an asshole lol with his deep voice but you can tell he was not made for this part!
@@AnastasiaLiliane no she was like 19 or 20 at the screen testing but when the movie finally finished and premiered, they both literally just had their birthdays. She had turned 22 and leo 23
Leo's voice *ALONE* is just perfect. All of Jack's lines from this entire movie... only work in Leo's voice. It's hard to describe or put into words... do you get what I am trying to say though? :/
+ErinLuxe This guy actually does a good job but it's just weird seeing him do the Jack role because we're so used to DiCaprio. They had amazing chemistry together.
Actually I think Jeremy Sisto does a great job, you're just used to seeing Leo in the role and it's then hard to imagine anyone else once someone leaves an imprint on a role.
Okay, Leo I see how you owned this movie. Leo is an amazing artist. The use of his facial features make all the difference. His ability to come off likable and genuine, funny and loving.
I agree.. there is awkwardness..neither of them are comfortable..no chemistry.. however jeremy sisto is a really fine actor.. leo is just a different type and has more charm..
I've read some other people's comments elsewhere who said Kate was a bad pick for the role of Rose, but I do believe she was perfect in this. And when you combine Leonardo with her, their chemistry appeared very natural and credible.
Her accent here is a little "common" and "loose" compared to the stiff erudite transcontinental accent she would have at the start. It even loosened a bit during the movie as she relaxed around Jack. Beautifully done.
Cut the poor guy some slack. This was probably one of their first encounters and they didn't have time to get to know each other. That's probably why there's lack of chemistry. Also this seems to be shot all at once, with no cuts and a gazillion of repeated shots until the pace, energy, chemistry, lighting and everything else is perfect. I am sure the movie would be ok even if they'd picked him, however Leo's boyish charm and good looks, along with Kate's sophistication were definitely a winning combination.
the guy is okay but i gotta disagree, not sure titanic wouldve been that huge of a phenomenon the way we knew it if dicaprio didnt play jack opposite winslet's rose
Daniel Radcliff's mom told him once, to keep him grounded in this business, if anyone else we're playing Harry Potter they would be getting the same response as you are and love them just as much, which sort of makes sense because the reason why we can't picture anyone else in the role is because we already saw him in it, but if it we're someone else we wouldn't be giving Leo a second thought and probably couldn't imagine anyone else in the role, but whoever would have replaced Leo. Don't get me wrong I love Leo and feel the same way.
She was 19 when she did Sense and Sensibility, so she would have been about 21 when she did Titanic. Still, such amazing presence and talent in such a young woman. :-)
@@Big-guy1981 You miss my point. I thought he was average at best. Why anyone would recommend him is mind boggling. You want to see him BELOW average? Watch his laughable performance in "The Man in the Iron Mask."
I think she was embarrassed and he sounded shy and embarrassed too, it's not their fault, they just didn't have chemistry and it was the first screen test so their acting skills weren't on point
The other guy was a good actor but it’s so crazy how as soon as Leo comes on set Kate improves drastically (not that she was bad in the first place), and the chemistry is through the roof. Couldn’t of imagined it with anyone else now i come to think of it. I’m kind of glad Leo was chosen for the role of Jack because obviously certain actors and actresses have got to have chemistry but when those two worked together you could see and feel the chemistry they had even off screen.
Kate and Leo actually love each other in real life under very close best friends they have this natural genuine Chemistry Between each other and they also respect each other as actors
It’s kind of like one Britney Spears performs when you see her in rehearsal it’s very good in comparison you would think OK this is how other performers are but once she is on stage for that actual performance, it’s like a light switch turns on and she becomes a superstar. It’s so weird seeing how people like that are so shy and quiet, but then they just have that stage presence.
Sisto always seems to have one setting. There's nothing animated in him, no life, no energy, no fun. It's just this energy that weighs down the proceedings. This is 180 degrees opposite of what DiCaprio did with the part. He makes Jack likeable in every scene. Here, you wonder why she's talking to this guy.
Aw man this makes me SO happy they found leonardo dicaprio to play with her. Just seeing this really makes you think of how different, and of how much smaller of a movie it would've been with the wrong actor and wrong chemistry between these two. This guy's acting is so cliche
2:24 that “I may have to get you to write that down” line sounds so cute and goofy when Leo says it! No one can replace him!!! He is the epitome of Jack! goofy, playful, cheeky, funny and sweet😭
It's a huge testament to Kate's talent that she acted so beautifully opposite a guy who has as much charisma as a wooden chair. She's also the reason why Leo accepted the part. He initially turned it down but she convinced him. THANK GOD. And they've been besties ever since. Everything worked out well.
Leo, Kate and Mark Wahlberg all benefitted. Leo was seriously considering taking the lead role in "Boogie Nights" over "Titanic," but Kate convinced him to come on board (no pun intended) Titanic so Leo told his "Basketball Diaries" co-star and buddy Mark about the "Boogie Nights" role and the rest is history. All three had their breakthrough roles in both movies.
He wasn’t auditioning for the part. . .it is Kate’s screen test with someone feeding the lines of the other character. He doesn’t have to act. . .they are watching and listening to her.
hey i have a question and idk if u know the answer but anyways 😂 this screentest was improvised or did they have like a script or sum? sorry for bothering and thank u for ur time :)
She's so exhilarating! You could totally see rose in this screen test.. Jim struck gold when he chose Leo and Kate though.. Their chemistry is the epitome of perfection and their friendship through all the ups and downs has proven that time and time again. They're my absolute favorite on screen couple.
This shows why Leo got the part. This Jack looks like he wants her. He tries to be sexy and seductive while Leo's more of a regular guy, chill and honest and astonished by Rose's soul. And of course she is just brilliant. Kate became a leading woman allong the character. As Rose did, she left fear, insecurities and worries behind and became a strong figure.
For me was that Jack is suppose to be this confident guy and I think Leo was able to portray a confident person. If this guy was just there to do the scene with her than I guess it doesn't matter. But if he was being screen tested, to me he seem to be intimidated being around her.
***** I love Leo more than jeremy sisto in this movie..He is better, more credible and he is less intimidated. This guy Jeremy seems so shy that he is dull and annoying .I got bored before the end.
I love Ms. Winslet. She is so genuine and real. It's hard to believe she carried such a role at 19. It shows her talent and desire to become the character. Seeing this and then realizing Jack really hasn't shown up yet but when he does Leo a nd Kate have such chemistry.
The right actor in the right part is everything. It's why casting is so important as is chemistry. Any of the great couples on screen have that tangible chemistry that the audience feels.
im sooo glad they picked leonardo dicaprio to play jack, jeremy sisto is terrible, he's flat and expressionless and not a patch on leo looks and acting wise. there is no chemistry between jeremy and kate. the chemistry between kate and leo is amazing and you forget they're even acting. cameron couldn't have picked anyone better to play rose and jack. thank god he didn't pick jeremy, this movie would have been dreadful if he did. kate and leo should have gotten together in real life
The beauty of direction! Kate Winslet is British, so this was her imitating a generic american accent before she was cast. I'm sure she had a vocal coach for at least a month and then all during filming.
She’s said she hates listening to her accent in the movie and says it’s “bad”.... I think it was perfect. Just like I’d imagine a first class American would sound like in the early 1900’s
Now I know why they selected leo. He's so perfect. I am not underestimating this actor..but there's no chemistry.. it's clear..but with leo..damn!! They were living each scenes. Love u more leo
Kate and Leo are the best of friends and are really close besides she would feel a whole lot more comfortable with him instead of this other actor the lot of chemistry between them no emotion whatsoever but with Leo it was completely different

it's always interesting to see something like this: all the noises that can't be heard in the film, the bad lighting and so on... makes you really appreciate the final product!
Shanto Lion but it’s possible the filming took more than one year, and their birthdays are in different months so.... Kate was 22 after the film was released tho..
She looks like the rose that is her name. So healthy and glowing. So different than most would've been in that day and time. Such an incredible actress!
I love how this scene is like a combination of many scenes in the movie! It's so cool to see how it all began! She is really a class A actress. He's not bad either, just not Leo.
fool4singing I think it just has to do with modern affectation. I'm American, and I came off the same age as her in this scene when I was 15. I spent more time around adults and highly educated people, though. You can definitely say for sure that in Hollywood movies and most media now days there is an emphasis on pop culture and the way of acting/talking that comes with it, which I think comes off as young and shallow. A lot of young people (and even 40 year olds sometime) have copied these affectations. It also has to do with the roles for actors in the US as well. Most of the time it's people who are older trying to act even younger than their ages. Most of the roles are immature and insipid. Take Jennifer Lawrence for example. In real life she acts and looks her age, yet when she was in American Hustle, although they did not make it clear what age she was supposed to be, her being married to Christian Bales' character and having several children (I think I remember that her character did?), one can only assume that her character was much older than her real age, and I think she acted the part just fine. Of course she didn't act like she was in her 40s, but easily she could have been 30.
I remember the girls in my class at the time who were head over heels in love with Leonardo. And we were in grade 2 for God’s sake. I wasn’t allowed to watch Titanic because it was deemed inappropriate due to some of the adult aspect of the movie. Soon after I watched it with my family censored of course and loved it! What a movie. I can honestly say it’s had the most impact around the world. The chemistry between the two main characters is beautiful and timeless :)
+Rowan Smits I heard he wasn't auditioning and just a stand-in. The test is really for Kate Winslet. But if this was an audition for Jack, we sure dodged a bullet there! Thank goodness they decided on Leo.
Hey guys, Jeremy was never auditioning for Jack. He was just a stand in to fill in for Winslets screen test. Leo hadn't committed. Later on, when winslet and Leo did their first screen test together, winslet told Cameron that even if he didn't choose her, to go with Leo.
George Waweru Of course Leo auditioned. Every actor auditions, even the ones who are specifically offered a role. But even when Leo passed the audition, he didn't instantly commit to the project, he wasn't sure it was the right fit for his career.
he is a great actor, very natural and delivered what his natural instinct tells him. No acting trash stuff in his performance. The only difference in casting Leo over him was chemistry with Kate. That's all. Such a tiny difference that we can't really explain in words, can make history in film. I admire that so much.
She's so great. You can really see why she got the part. Amazing how she's always been such a wonderful actress even when she was young and even in an audition.
Kate with red hair is PERFECTION.
And gum....gum as well would be perfection.

Lollllll yes thats trueee
I.e. no Chemistry. Lol.
Been there, my man
@@monkeybrown5218 Wrong. That is Jeremy Sisto. An accomplished actor in his own right. A screen test is not only just used for one actor on one audition. Screen tests are also used to measure chemistry between actors being considered for different roles. Obviously, Leo had better chemistry with Kate.
This makes me appreciate Leo’s acting so much. The difference between the Jack in this screen test and the Jack in the movie is night and day
Leo had more of the playful childlike energy that was needed for Kates character to break out of the chains she was living in
She was 19? Holy CRAP she's so elegant
+NANCAY WANG OMG! She looks like 30! That's insane!

+NANCAY WANG Lol .. Elegantly put. :D

Kate Winslet was great, perfect choice. I keep forgetting she was only 19, she looked more mature.
+MSO
Wow, I guess that means she was even younger in "Sense and Sensibility"! 17 or 18, maybe?
+MSO She was actually 22 years old in Titanic. She was born in 1975 and the film was made in 1997.
+MSO I wonder how did you calculate the 19.
Anna-- I heard it somewhere in the media, perhaps their calculations were a bit off. Wouldn't be the first time the media was wrong...but 20 years old isn't much different.
+MSO My goodnes, now she is what? 40? 41? and she looks exactly the same
God, Kate is so beautiful.
He's alright. Not as good as Leo.
I think he's pretty good as an actor, but I can't unsee him as a spoiled rich kid because of Clueless, so I could never have watched him in this role!
Leo is better, but Jeremy is so cute.
Was he the second choice for Jack?
He seems to be speaking very softly and almost mumbling - I can barely understand him. That made it hard for me to stay engaged. They seemed to be at two different intensities or levels or something.
It's so cringy seeing Kate do a titanic seen without Leo being jack

I'm sure glad he played Jesus Christ in the movie "Jesus". Great one! He rocked that role! Got it on DVD.

Leo was born to play the part of jack!
True
Kate Winslet is one of those women that are just "classic"as in you could plop her in probably any century and she would have been stunning in whatever time period of world history. She is in our movies, but she could have also appeared in Renaissance paintings..
Definitely, and her "nude" body is also the classical looking type, like the type in a renaissance painting.
fruitofthejoot So true. She just has that classic look. She could do a movie set in any time period and she would never look out of place.
Stones Fan I see what you mean, but there are a ton of movie stars that you could say the same thing about. You could put Scarlett Johannson as an Egyptian pharaoh's wife or an alien sex slave in 2599 and she'd be admired regardless.
miu miu rose if you've seen the sort of movies she's been in, i think you'd understand
She really fits historical movies
I love how kate developed the character from this screen test. The accent she ends up using is so much better and her more shy reserved body language fits Rose's character a lot better too. This version of rose is a bit too brash and confident for a nineteen year old upper class woman about to be married off against her will
She's 17.

I completely agree
@@philbecker4676ROSE is 17, KATE was 21

He's so serious. Leo actually made everything funny. When I watch this scene with Leo, I laugh, because of Leo's facial expressions and Kate's portrayal of Rose's frustration. But here it doesn't have any humour. And I can barely hear him lmao
Leo is great..an amazing actor - and so cute and funny. ,animated,, free spirited, creative .and really smart
I think Leo captures the youthful spirit that was supposed to be portrayed. Rose and Jack are young in the movie and especially given Jack’s lifestyle I think it suits him to be more free-spirited and have a lighter outlook on life
Yes, the innocence, and cheerfulness towards life, living to the fullest up to his capabilities and yet responsible and humorous.
Leo didn’t look at all like people from that time. It ruined what could’ve been a great movie if they got the acting and the plot better

THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING THE WHOLE TIME
Man, she’s good.
Ей тут 23 года так то
Sisto is horrible and not for this part! Unfortunately he plays better roles as an asshole lol with his deep voice but you can tell he was not made for this part!
@@AnastasiaLiliane no she was like 19 or 20 at the screen testing but when the movie finally finished and premiered, they both literally just had their birthdays. She had turned 22 and leo 23

ErinLuxe not at all
Actually I think Jeremy Sisto does a great job, you're just used to seeing Leo in the role and it's then hard to imagine anyone else once someone leaves an imprint on a role.
This looks like an incredibly difficult screen test. It looks like it's one continuous take and Kate's performance is very on the spot.

Okay, Leo I see how you owned this movie. Leo is an amazing artist. The use of his facial features make all the difference. His ability to come off likable and genuine, funny and loving.
I couldn't see him pulling it off without Kate. It only worked because of both actors.
Glad they chose Leo, with his natural, effortless charm. Leo has that ability to say his lines like he’s giving you a small wink.
Man the chemistry between these two is completely off. Just imagine if they hadn't put Leonardo in the movie. The chemistry would've of been terrible.
But I think she's off, not him. Imagine if they had put a better actress with him.
+jolie robles imagine if your brain wasnt fried with drugs

kimmyfreak200 How old are you? His charm doesn't work anymore. Besides his charm works only on young girls not women.
*would have been
There is no "of"...
I've read some other people's comments elsewhere who said Kate was a bad pick for the role of Rose, but I do believe she was perfect in this. And when you combine Leonardo with her, their chemistry appeared very natural and credible.
She did she was talented and looked like a edwardian girl.
i like kate and she is talented but just looked too old
+BriefcaseWanker she's 19 in this movie
ErinLuxe i know but she looked too old. like 24
+Mike Kennedy Agreed. I thought she was very good. A lot of people talked about how she looked fat, but I thought her tits looked great!
Her accent here is a little "common" and "loose" compared to the stiff erudite transcontinental accent she would have at the start. It even loosened a bit during the movie as she relaxed around Jack. Beautifully done.
the TA accent was reserved for hollywood. classes were taken for it. civilians didnt use it although they were much more well spoken regardless
Yes, he is pretty good!
I've seen him in many other films and did a great job in em, but titanic wasn't for him!
It just wasn’t for him
the guy is okay but i gotta disagree, not sure titanic wouldve been that huge of a phenomenon the way we knew it if dicaprio didnt play jack opposite winslet's rose
Kate was 19?? Holy, I thought she was like 28 maybe. She looks so mature for her age!
I'm pretty sure that's a mistake and she was 22 :)
She was 19 when she did Sense and Sensibility, so she would have been about 21 when she did Titanic. Still, such amazing presence and talent in such a young woman. :-)
in reality she looked very young and girlish

Yep.
I agree, Jeremy is good here, honestly better than Kate. Then with Leo, Kate's whole performance is elevated.

The beauty of direction! Kate Winslet is British, so this was her imitating a generic american accent before she was cast. I'm sure she had a vocal coach for at least a month and then all during filming.

She has like that 20’s accent. I love itttttt. It makes it like it’s actually 1912 with her voice.
She got special training for that. Watch her Oprah Interview

fool4singing do we? haha :P :)
fool4singing I think it just has to do with modern affectation.
