Drummer, producer, singer, and songwriter James Gadson has worked with the world's top performing artists, including Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Bill Withers, The Temptations, Ramsey Lewis, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, Patrice Rushen, the Pointer Sisters, Herb Alpert, the 5th Dimension, Smokey Robinson, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, and Paul McCartney.
On this DVD, James demonstrates and explains the many funk and rhythm & blues beats in his entertaining and enthusiastic manner. This session includes several live performances with talented sidemen June Yamagishi on guitar, Toru Tsuzuki on keyboards, and Ko Shimizu on bass guitar.
I have known this man for nearly 50 years I have played many big time gigs with this man he is undoubtedly one of the greatest drummers and most recorded drummer of all times keep him in your prayers.
Must be a great honor. "I want you" the sofa practice tape is an all time favorite of mine. Plus Live at Carnegie hall w Bill Withers (a favorite song writer).
It's a dream of mine to see him at a clinic at Vic's drum shop in Chicago.
I bought this DVD a couple of months back. It's the BEST drum learning vid i ever saw. Covers lot's of difference black styles, no pointless solos or useless tricks, no show-boatin' whatsoever, just pure goodness. GoGeddit.
Love his voice...he could be a radio personality, and love the guitarist too.
Keeps it right there all the time and keeps me there with him tight and right. I played congas and percussion with James brother Tutti , Joe Banks Blues and Friends. I still tear up when i think of him. All I can say is that when your thinking of doin something with other folks, don't wait! I'm finding out now that I am getting older that it's sometimes to late. I'm happy to have recorded most of our gigs and I can sit back and visualize us playin. cool
Learned how to play listening to James and purdie
I like this guy--excellent feel & groove
Gotta love him, his playing and his instructions! :-)
Let it roll!..James is bad dude...guitar player bringing too.
I bought his 2 dvd's
james is an all around fantastic drummer. I first discovered his groove back in 68 with Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd St Band then onto Bill Withers. He is a GROOVEMAKER in any style
James Gadson was playing drums in a duet song of Summer/Streisand "No more tears(Enough is enough" Fantastic musician! Respect!!!!!
Mr Yamagishi is playing the shit out of that guitar - you can tell he loves it! And Mr Gadson is one fine drummer - love this kind of real music. Four on the Floor, baby! For those who may not know, Mr Gadson is session drummer for Beck now. :)
The funk legend himself
"That's that good sh-. . . texas driving style"
Brilliant.

Alright, now!
This guy is the tupe master
thats one bad ass funky wig
We draahvin'
Do you know who is credited with starting the Texas shuffle? Ray Price.
@sethisloggedin R&B means rhythm and blues which this is.
Vangelo secondo Gadson !!!!!
That's that good s- ... Texas driving style!
@RobynWalpole Yes, I'm well aware of what R&B stands for...the title says FUNK R&B...not just R&B. So...not saying you're wrong, just completely off base :)
OMG, so many mics on his kit that looks like a xmas tree
They should jam for 2 hours at least, this is grooooooooovy
Do percussionists get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? If so, James Gadson should be inducted.
Heeeeeyyyy now! Ha haaaa!
Thar guitarist is smoking too they need to record this at least 8 minutes long...you dig
Left hand goodness
Tyler Perry got his groove back
Guitar player is smoking
@filip1218 thanks
2 mics on the toms, but i can barely hear them? What does having two mics do?
I could've swore he was gonna say...
"Yeah! That's that Texas Driving Shit."
A lot of guys try to drive that with the kick. It's better to do it on top like James is talking about.
So many mics lol.
Is that his real hair?
He's more like Gaddsfather....
does somebody know a good song to pracrice this
The black Steve Gadd... (purely for name similarites)
Mike Hanopololololol
@CloggedLacrimalGland hahahahaha uo nga
not my syle, but he's good!
That's some weave
i bet he has some great funk and r&b chops. too bad there not on display here. wrong title for the video i believe
therolfinator Search for “James Gadson cold sweat” on here and you’ll find one of many examples. He did more funk than blues, but was brilliant at both.
yes that's a wig he took it off in front of my sister in Kansas City
and that is my uncle
my God, I can't even imagine playing in long sleeves, much less a wig! *too HOT*!
lol
This is blues...not R&B, good try.
tool
im sure im wrong for a thousand reasons but i wouldnt call this guy amazing
Yeah, I agree with you.
I'm.going to venture you're not a drummer, or you'd know him already. :)
Bill Withers: live at Carnegie hall
Marvin Gaye, the "sofa video" of I want You, with the bead-haired bass player in the thumbnail...? Go check that out and come on back.
If you think it's easy, try recording it as a drummer. It's harder to play "something easy" that it first sounds, than something busier. Lots of technical guys can't do it. They know showing off and flash, not pocket or driving a song for the band. He and Bernard Purdie will tell you which one keeps you paid. The one that keeps the girls dancing :) I heard Bernard say it 7 feet away from me in person. Most valuable thing I've heard in years playing drums.
where is the funk?
Clearly this has nothing to do with Funk or R&B. This is as white as you can get. No groove or anything. Just a hillbilly shuffle.
