    After collecting oaks I am convinced the best way to get a oak bonsai is definitely by seed! When collecting I am convinced their root balls all come from near middle earth 🤣.
    Love the structural set on that first tree Nigel!

    The new feline friends are precious, Nige, I've midwifed (midhusbanded?) a large number of litters myself. Mama cats are usually at their sweetest at this stage. Of course the trees are looking good too! Keep it up!

    I have now a nightshade vine that volunteered itself in a plastic container pot that a tree died in. So. Taking your, "why not let's give it a try" theory, I am going for it. Being different and not sticking to just standard trees is a unique theory.

    Loved seeing the oaks! would you recommend removing an oak from a bonsai pot and placing in a large pot or the ground to help thicken out the trunk? The main part of the oak died (so left a dead part) and grew a new shoot from the trunk which is about a year (just over) old… that’s the part I need to thicken out. Thanks 😊

  • @beth7467
    @beth7467 2 года назад +1

    At about 10:05, in the case where that part of the tree is already weak and you're smoothing out the bumpiness by nibbling away at it, would that be a case for applying some sort of cut paste to protect it? I'm learning.

    I wonder if there are different types of Natal Ficus?

    • @BlueJayBonsai
      @BlueJayBonsai 2 года назад +1

      You got me wondering Alan, and I had to look it up: "Within Ficus natalensis, 3 subspecies are recognized: subsp. natalensis (‘coastal strangler fig’), distributed in East tropical Africa and coastal South Africa; subsp. graniticola J.E.Burrows (‘granite-boulder fig’, ‘natal fig’), growing inland in Zimbabwe, probably also in western Mozambique and northern South Africa, differing from subsp. natalensis in its leathery, often grey-green leaves, the often truncate leaf apex and the larger figs which are yellow when ripe; and subsp. leprieurii (Miq.) C.C.Berg, distributed from Senegal to southern Sudan and southwards to eastern DR Congo, Zambia and to northern Angola, differing from subsp. natalensis in its often shrubby, scandent habit, obovate to obtriangular leaves and small figs."

    • @reywashere5284
      @reywashere5284 2 года назад +1

      In some of his earliest videos he used it a bit. From what he's said, it's mostly because he feels that he gets more natural results from clip-and-grow than wiring, and he prefers the idea of having every branch grow where it grows, rather than twisting them to obey his will.
      In a wild tree, natural forces like wind and heavy snow tend to break off less structurally stable branches, encouraging trees into a healthy form. Clip and grow does largely the same thing, only instead of a hurricane, it's the bonsai artist.
