  • The Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers of the United Kingdom's Royal Navy consists of two vessels. The lead ship of her class, HMS Queen Elizabeth, was named on 4 July 2014 in honour of Elizabeth I and was commissioned on 7 December 2017. Her sister ship, HMS Prince of Wales, was launched on 21 December 2017, and was commissioned on 10 December 2019. They form the central components of the UK Carrier Strike Group.

Ummm wrong. The queen Elizabeth class Aircraft carrier is far more capable then is predecessors, the Invincible class Aircraft carriers. More aircraft, better electronics, sensors and more room for upgrades. You can also have fewer ships with far more capabilities that surpass fleets thats are larger and less capable.

Further correction: The Battle of Trafalgar was a naval engagement in1805 between the British Royal Navy and the combined fleets of the French and Spanish Navies. Needless to say the Royal Navy defeated the French and the Spanish simultaneously.

Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier - £7.6 billion. UK annual defence budget - £54.2 billion. This video is full of wildly inaccurate information.

Of course they cut the budget after the war . We went from full blown war to peace . The Falklands war was not “a small twist” . Do agree , I think not having cats and traps is a major mistake , especially with increasing use of large drones . It also makes these carriers dependent on F35Bs . Hopefully they will get converted in the future . They do have a life of 50 years . The country does need to up its readiness with ships with teeth rather than potential . I doubt people would agree that Russia is no longer a threat !

Not having Cats and traps is blowing everyone including you away. I served in the Royal navy in the 1970's and 1980's. Cats and traps means that if anything goes wrong then the whole deck is out of action, thus limiting carrier shis to being within reach of a land base that can be used in emergencies. There is NOTHING to break down on the QE class, so like the Invicible class of carriers (way smaller than the US carriers the QE class Can out launch the biggest US carriers. The invincible class regularly outlaunched a US carrier during the Former Yugoslavia crisis nearly every month they were there. Because there is no mechanical mechanism to go wrong the deck doesn't have to be out of commision for one hour twice a day to check the Cta and traps, and the complete system. If however anything is found wrong during that twice daily inspection then the minimum time out of action is at least 6 hours. Mean while the QE is launching, and landing at the same time 3 aircraft every 30 minutes, 24 hours of every day. Also with cats and traps you have to choose which you are doing, either launching, or landing, you simplty CANNOT do both with the outdated cats and traps idea. Thus the Qe cab launch and land 800 aircraft a day whist the largest US carriers can only do 750 launches/landings a day.

@@thetruthhurts7675 Excellent points, PROVIDED the carriers have all their complement of planes ( which is currently not the case - not by a long shot!).
Another point is that the 2 British carriers together cost considerably less than only one Ford carrier, and together have the potential to operate more aircraft in total, and quicker, as you point out. It also has the unique carrier capability of supporting land-based Marines operations from on board!
I personally don't think it was a bad decision. A Ford class carrier requires a mid-life (25 years) refuel anyway, like a QE major refit, except the Ford is out of service for a minimum of 3 full years, probably more! The British refit means that they would still have an operational second carrier, till they swap around till both have been done! A Ford refuel would also cost almost as much as the build cost of QE, while the crew would be totally disbanded for the duration and re-assigned elsewhere. This means it starts out its second stint with a completely new crew, with all the problems that entails.

@@dennisleighton2812 Well seeing as how the Invincible class could only carry 15 harriers in an absolute emergency outlaunching, and sortie increased numbers on the QE are already way above any other cats and traps carrier in the world. Just a thought for you to hold there when making the claim about the number of UK F35's. Plus you forget (or don't know) the major disadvantage with cats and traps. Every time a larger aircraft is used from a carrier guess what happens first? Don't worry I will tell you, the cats and traps need to be made stronger, which entails ripping up the entire deck, and replacing it with a completely new system. This has happened on the Ford itself 4 times, and still it cannot launch more than 15 sorties without there being some kind of major problem. Cats and traps are outdated, and outmoded by the designs inbuilt in the QE class, for example the launch ramp on the QE class is designed in such a way that if on launch something happens and the aircraft is stable, but unflyable the top of the platform is angled to port so that the aircraft can fly around into a recovery position withouth the pilot touching the controls (that is providing the intakes don't have the cover left on them upon take off. Also the QE can launch aircraft (as could the Invincible class carriers) in what is called ahigher sea states than any cat and trap carrier in the US fleet. This is somewhat because of the double island design, and because the F35B has a higher launch vector than the F35C from cats. Plus the Qe class was designed to accomodate every aircraft being designed currently and in the future for the NATO countries that have carriers, it's Hangers are vastly more cavernous than those on the Ford, or Nimitz class, and the operational deck on the QE is larger than on either the Ford, or the Nimitz, that is without the addition of cats and traps, and the angled deck.

@@thetruthhurts7675 It seems that we agree about the QE class carriers! And you make some very good points that generally get overlooked. My main point of concern is the very slow uptake of actual planes on board. With a complement of 30 aircraft each, however, they do indeed represent a credible force, with many advantages over the US carriers. The two carriers could have a long (+- 30 more years) career ahead of them, providing excellent service to the Royal Navy.
      Cheers mate!

"Nelson defeated The Armada in the Battle of Trafalgar". Really?
    Let's see:
The Spanish Armada was in 1588.
The Battle of Trafalgar was in 1805. 217 years later.
    Hmmm ........... 🤔

Well this video was a joke in the first 30 seconds the history is wrong, Nelson was not the one who defeated the Armada and it was not the Spanish we were battling at Trafalgar. The Spanish Armada attempted to invade in 1588 and the Battle of Trafalgar was in 1805. If you are going to make these videos at least fact check first a year 8 student in a British secondary school could have corrected this.

The QE class is a national embarrassment. They should have been fitted with cats and traps. Now they're stuck with the most expensive, slowest, heaviest, less capable variant of the F35. It limits the type of aircraft to fly off its decks and lacks interoperability with France and America carriers.
