So I can sit out here and waste my life away

This is an anthem for all the working class in this country, and even the world (globalism). Oliver lives in Virginia and he does pay tribute to the miners with the line "I wish politicians would look out for miners, and not just minors on an island somewhere". Yes, this is targeting the rich men in DC, our "representatives". The instrument he's playing is called a resonator guitar. Supposedly Oliver is recovering from alcoholism - hence is personal reference to drowning his sorrows away.
    Here's the lyrics:

@@JustinTheJT It's a Gretch Resonator. Guitars like this were more common in early country/bluegrass because they could cut through and be heard. Remember: There was a time before amplifiers and microphones. That's why recordings of 'down home' music made in the 20's and 30's used LOUD, often even obnoxious-sounding instruments. Cutting a record back then literally meant cutting grooves into wax masters and with limited amplification, if you wanted to hear a voice or an instrument, you had to perform as loudly as you could.
It's the same reason early TV actors seemed so dramatic in their performances. They often came from the stage era, where you had to expostulate and over-perform a part so the audience could hear and see you. When the 'crooner' music started in the late 30's and 40's, for the first time, a woman could hear a man (who was not her husband), almost whispering in her ear.

He's also saying if you're 5''3" and 300 lbs. then taxes aught not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds (Little Debbie cakes) while hard working men are working themselves 6 ft. into the ground. He's slamming the obesity in this country who take full advantage of welfare to pay for all their crap food. Welfare shouldn't pay for people's junk food and enable unhealthy habits. I'm pretty sure all taxpayers and hard working men and women would rather keep their money, rather than give it to the lazy who don't help themselves. Meanwhile hardworking citizens are working to the bone 70+ hrs a week just to make it by... And they still have to pay a percentage of what they make to the lazy. It's not right.

It's a resonator guitar, sometimes called a Dobro, after the primary brand. It's an early attempt at making guitars loud enough to be heard over the drums. It has a metal speaker cone inside it, but it's passive; it moves with air, not electricity. You have heard it in a lot of songs, most likely; you just didn't know what you were hearing. It's a very common blues instrument.

He is playing a Gretsch Resonator guitar. I have a Pyle Resonator hanging on my wall next to my tele clone. It has a very unique sound from the sound cone under the strings. It is based on the Dobro, however it is to played like a regular guitar, where a Dobro is played laying flat and using a steel like you would a lap steel guitar. You can use a slide with a Resonator and it will sound like using a steel on Dobro.
And you have picked up on the messaging in the song. It's the voice of all of us. It's tired, it dreams for the world where things were somewhat simpler. And it's calling out those in power and authority for their interference and influence peddling.

    It's a Gretsch Resonator Guitar.
A resonator guitar or resophonic guitar is an acoustic guitar that produces sound by conducting string vibrations through the bridge to one or more spun metal cones (resonators), instead of to the guitar's sounding board (top). Resonator guitars were originally designed to be louder than regular acoustic guitars, which were overwhelmed by horns and percussion instruments in dance orchestras. They became prized for their distinctive tone, and found life with bluegrass music and the blues well after electric amplification solved the problem of inadequate volume.
Resonator guitars are of two styles:
Square-necked guitars played in lap steel guitar style
Round-necked guitars played in conventional guitar style or steel guitar style
But this song isn't about art. This is an awakening. This is about the message.
