This is an anthem for all the working class in this country, and even the world (globalism). Oliver lives in Virginia and he does pay tribute to the miners with the line "I wish politicians would look out for miners, and not just minors on an island somewhere". Yes, this is targeting the rich men in DC, our "representatives". The instrument he's playing is called a resonator guitar. Supposedly Oliver is recovering from alcoholism - hence is personal reference to drowning his sorrows away.
    Here's the lyrics:
    I've been selling my soul
    Working all day
    Overtime hours
    For bullshit pay
So I can sit out here, and waste my life away
Drag back home, and drown my troubles away
    It's a damn shame
    What the worlds gotten to
For people like me, and people like you
Wish I could just wake up, and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is
    Living in the new world
    With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just want to have total control
    Wanna know what you think
    Wanna know what you do
And they don't think you know, but I know that you do
Cause your dollar ain't shit, and it's taxed to no end
Cause the rich men north of Richmond
I wish politicians would look out for miners, and not just minors on an island somewhere
Lord, we got folks in the street, ain't nothing to eat
    And the obese milking welfare
    Well God if you're 5 foot 3 and you're 300 pounds
Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds
Young men are putting themselves six feet in the ground
Cause all this damn country does is keep on kicking them down

He is playing a Gretsch Resonator guitar. I have a Pyle Resonator hanging on my wall next to my tele clone. It has a very unique sound from the sound cone under the strings. It is based on the Dobro, however it is to played like a regular guitar, where a Dobro is played laying flat and using a steel like you would a lap steel guitar. You can use a slide with a Resonator and it will sound like using a steel on Dobro.
And you have picked up on the messaging in the song. It's the voice of all of us. It's tired, it dreams for the world where things were somewhat simpler. And it's calling out those in power and authority for their interference and influence peddling.
When I was a child, a high school graduate could get a good enough job to buy a house and have a family and do it on one salary. Now one salary won't even pay for your groceries.

@@JustinTheJT It's a Gretch Resonator. Guitars like this were more common in early country/bluegrass because they could cut through and be heard. Remember: There was a time before amplifiers and microphones. That's why recordings of 'down home' music made in the 20's and 30's used LOUD, often even obnoxious-sounding instruments. Cutting a record back then literally meant cutting grooves into wax masters and with limited amplification, if you wanted to hear a voice or an instrument, you had to perform as loudly as you could.
It's the same reason early TV actors seemed so dramatic in their performances. They often came from the stage era, where you had to expostulate and over-perform a part so the audience could hear and see you. When the 'crooner' music started in the late 30's and 40's, for the first time, a woman could hear a man (who was not her husband), almost whispering in her ear.
These guitars could be HEARD, and it's an interesting choice for Oliver, isn't it? HE wants to be heard!

He's slamming the obesity in this country who take full advantage of welfare to pay for all their crap food. Welfare shouldn't pay for people's junk food and enable unhealthy habits. I'm pretty sure all taxpayers and hard working men and women would rather keep their money, rather than give it to the lazy who don't help themselves. Let me add that the money that goes to “help” other countries isn’t to help them. It’s to either bribe, pay off or launder the the money. Please research this and not fall victim to something some politician said somewhere. I think you’re great! I really enjoy your reactions ❤️ Thank you kindly dear lady for doing this one. Where we go one, we go all.

Musicians like Oliver Anthony, Jason Aldean, Tom MacDonald, and Adam Calhoun are following in the footsteps of artists of the 60s, telling it like it is. This is an anthem for the working class and a rallying cry. Its the working class who pay ALL the taxes.

@@lukemilam918 It doesn't matter that some else wrote the song. He is the one who has the balls to put his career on the line singing the song. Do you hear the lyricist singing thus in public with his career on the line? Jason Aldean like MacDonald and Calhoun and Oliver Anthony is one the front line not sitting in front of a screen imputant.

We traded our souls for a bellies full of toxic chemicals, a society full of obscenities, the loss of a national identity, and worst of all our hopes and dreams. Our culture is stagnant, our movies and TV shows are poorly written, our news is all fake and disingenuous, and our politicians HATE and DESPISE us so much they'd rather enrich themselves halfway around the world then meet their obligations here. So yes, your depression era parents saw some dark days, lived through the Golden Age, and would/do completely disagree with the direction we're heading, if they have any sense left. It's not enough to survive, you have to live as well.

He’s playing a resophonic guitar. Also known as a dobro. The style can be played like a regular guitar like he’s playing or on the players lap or flat. Jerry Douglas is a very popular flat style dobro player. I have the same dobro as Oliver has only mine is played flat so the neck of the dobro is squared. Oliver’s has a round neck, so it’s played as a regular guitar. The metal part has a cone in the body of the dobro and helps resonate sound outwards. The instrument is usually played in bluegrass, country, delta blues, and Hawaiian music. It was invented in Hawaii.

It’s called a Resophonic guitar. They were invented in a time before amplification in an attempt to give the instrument more volume. Since that time it’s sounds and uses have been used in everything from blues and rock in the “round neck” version which is played like a regular guitar, to country and bluegrass with the lap steel sound of the “ square neck” or Dobro version of the guitar which is played with a slide like a steel guitar. Either way the resophomic guitar has been around since before the civil war and the sounds it makes are still sought after today by musical artists of all genres.

How refreshing to see a downright wholesome song about what is true today! I believe it brought some emotions up that I had brewing deep down, this past year or so, that I had not really acknowledged. I didn't spend a better part of a decade serving this country in defense of adversaries to let its values, and morals, be tossed aside by unpatriotic groups and individuals who cannot realize the beauty of this democracy. There will be a time of reckoning and only God knows when. Until then, thank you Britt for this reaction to Oliver Anthony's "Rich men North of Richmond". You go girl!
