It is based on the Dobro, however it is to played like a regular guitar, where a Dobro is played laying flat and using a steel like you would a lap steel guitar. I think that's a resonator guitar. They're louder so they won't get drowned out by other instruments and it gives them a very unique 'twangy' sound.
Its called a Dobro. Normally it is played flaty with a pick and bar on the frets but it can be played like a guitar.

It is based on the Dobro, however it is to played like a regular guitar, where a Dobro is played laying flat and using a steel like you would a lap steel guitar. You can use a slide with a Resonator and it will sound like using a steel on Dobro.

So yes, your depression era parents saw some dark days, lived through the Golden Age, and would/do completely disagree with the direction we're heading, if they have any sense left. It's not enough to survive, you have to live as well.
Let me add that the money that goes to “help” other countries isn’t to help them. It’s to either bribe, pay off or launder the the money.
