My great grandfather was an engineer from 1920ish until 1950ish. He never operated a Diesel engine. He worked out of Portland Or. I wish he were around to tell me about it.... thanks for posting the video!

Really... Also back then in 1944...? How did they run their trains crosscountry in the old days without squadrons of diesel helpers...? Never saw any of them on O. Winston Link's legendary N&W footage. Todays "historic" rides of great vintage steamers are mostly ridiculous...
@@Dokker62 The diesel is actually there mostly for its onboard computer systems. I don't remember the exact name, but modern diesels are connected to a network so rail traffic control can moniter the train's location, notify other trains about said position, and automate nearby switches to keep the train on route. It's easier to just slap a diesel on the consist, rather than trying to fit the whole computing and power systems onto a steamer.
@@redman7775 Sounds like all of these functions could be provided by a laptop or similar mobile device as in the majority its about software and connectivity. In Germany small cargo companies operating older diesel units not being equipped with latest technology do it exactly that way. In contrast historic rides with steamers nowadays also often run additional engines just to provide electric power as modern cars used for these 'authentic' rolling stocks do not match the leading old lady.

Professional observation is her fire is a hair dirty on the opening to middle (before her rebuilding) & she isn't being unbridled to her capabilities; all else aside she is being well handled by her crew

I hear it every time it's out! Where do you live?

Holy Democracy, listen to that: Diesels are the workhorses, sure, but the sound and fury of a big hog getting out of town in a hurry makes me want a Brass Band, with Astronauts, pretty girls, and ice cream! GO, BABY, GO...
Sometimes whistles get worn, or they change them for special occasions. Changing whistles had been huge since the Railtour era of the 1970s and beyond.
If the whistle is worn could the re-machine one? And is it possible that they changed it because it is its first run in 2016 or they just decided to change it because they could?.
Early in the vid when 844 is passing the freight the diesel is emitting exhaust as if its "giving a hand" there's one thing for sure it doesn't look like its idling!!!!!
