      Maybe not designs exactly like these, but maybe steam-electric locos could be designed, the main problem is operation cost, diesels are cheaper to run than these.

    • @railroadmcdailroad1565
      @railroadmcdailroad1565 6 лет назад +3

      @@nathanofftopic Scientifically speaking, steam has no limit in power. The more heat generated = more steam pressure. It's only limited by the amount of stress the boiler, cylinder and pistons can handle. Electric motors OTOH have a maximum output range and that's all you get. If you require more power then you have to start teaming them. How many times have you seen two or three steam locomotives teamed together pulling freight? The main reason for the change over from steam to diesel electric was due to the amount of maintenance time and cost required to keep a steam locomotive running. They have way more moving parts and moving parts wear down.

    Search for a picture of the Southern Pacific 4207, and we see a 2-6-6-2 that has a tender with a fairly standard looking pair of trucks. Also, notice how the front cylinder is larger. The front cylinder receives recycled steam from the exhaust of the rear cylinder.
    We can conclude that more wheels equals higher quality, and the Union Pacific, being the most badass railroad around, put as many wheels as they could on their tender, not to exceed the limits set by the equation w=2a.

  • @gmc0422
    @gmc0422 3 года назад

    Wow! Talk about haulin' a**. I guess that is referred to by the train "nuts" as highballing.
    Did you make note of her speed? Does 4014 go as fast?
    That is so majestic, seeing those rods and those 8 drivers working as a whole. Once she gets going that fast, you don't hear the typical chug-chug. Those driving cylinders are exhausting so fast, that all you hear is a mild "patter". This, by God, is a TRAIN! I think I've seen several clips of her pulling a regular freight train, and I'd bet she doesn't even grunt.
    I'm delighted to see that UP is taking advantage of their heritage and restoring these beautiful old locomotives; if nothing else for posterity.

    Your pacing footage is nothing short of epic! It is literally a collector's piece and an archive of historical significance. Technically, I am sure you notice the difference between the sound of the steam whistle from your stationary shots and your pacing shots. In the former the sound rises and falls as the engine passes you owing to the Doppler effect and it does not because there is no Doppler.

  • @GuyBucktastik
    @GuyBucktastik  12 лет назад

    whoops! the SP 4207 is a cab-forward steam locomotive, so it is the rear cylinder that receives the cold recycled steam from the front cylinder.

  • @GuyBucktastik
    @GuyBucktastik  12 лет назад

    ok, i'll answer your q.
    yes.
    you only see centipede tenders on locomotives that had large fuel requirements. 844 had top speed of 110mph, and needed lots of water
    The 'centipede' tender that you see here was delivered with the FEF-2 and FEF-3 locomotives from Alco. Five axles are rigidly mounted to the tender, while a four-wheeled trucked is allowed to move laterally to navigate through curves.
    I think that that yellow, 2nd tender is from one of UP's old steam turbines, but I don't know.

  • @GuyBucktastik
    @GuyBucktastik  12 лет назад

    The number of wheels is determined by the following equation:
    w=2a
    w=number of wheels on tender
    a=number of axles on tender
    If any more or less wheels are put on the tender, derailment risk increases.

  • @Pianoman71213

    Why in the world are they using a diesel for a 6 caoach consist. That thing could pull 16 coaches at 90 mph on the flats. And in reguards to the comment below, the 800's had a higher top speed that 110 mph. Steve Lee is quoted saying no one really knows how fast an 800 could go but they were safe to up to 120 mph.

    • @GuyBucktastik
      @GuyBucktastik  10 лет назад +11

      They are using the diesel for safety. Railroading is dangerous business, even on uneventful days. The dynamic braking provided by the diesel locomotive makes the insurance bean-counters happy.

    • @Pianoman71213
      @Pianoman71213 10 лет назад +1

      My father works for the Union Pacific so I am fully aware of the dangers in railroading. Steve Lee said in a thread that they only used diesels when the weight of the conist was higher than what would have been allowed during steam days. If Steve Lee only used em under those conditions than why does Ed use em twenty-four seven. Of coarse at the rate he's going, we won't have to worry about steam at all. He's dang near ruined the 844's boiler.

      Railroads don't want old engines accidently breaking down and requiring shutting down the main line. So they keep the diesel there 'just in case'. Of course that 4-8-4 doesn't need help pulling anything.
