Mark, you're step-by-step videos are awesome and they taught me when I was learning, but as I became better with my art skills, I no longer needed their "guiding hand" so to speak and the general tutorials gave me knowledge that I could use and apply to a multitude of projects and use it as I needed it. So I think the step-by-step is good for all of those beginners following you, and the general is good for the more advanced, and just for everybody really.
I learned from your colored pencil video and liked that you only used them. Would love to see more types of clouds - my favorite thing to look at when I walk outside.
I find your technique videos more helpful (like the 2 point perspective star destroyer^^ or the scene in the woods where the trees further away become grey). These are the videos that really advance my drawing. BUT I think a good balance is everything. Alternating between step by step & technique would be fantastic. And thank you.
Started watching because it was Kiki and I wanted to learn how to draw clouds! Thanks, you don't know how happy this made me.
No , we do want a step by step illustration, it is soooo educational and this is exactly what I love .
I don't, its not educational since it only applies to very specific scenarios.
Mark Crilley, i was at a store called Micheal's the other day, and i found your book on Mastering Manga, and i immediately bought the book. You have by far the BEST how to draw manga book ever! I'm so glad that i bought it, and i am very glad that you made this book.
Mark was the very first RUclipsr that gave me tips on illustrating
Also, I really love the difference in texture in your works. The smooth, watercolor look of Kiki looks really nice against the sky texture.
I really appreciate that you're dispelling the illusions of people NOT referencing photos and things from 'reality'. It's simply a fact that artists only get better by referencing life - hence 'life-drawing classes' in schools . I've been teaching myself to draw for 14 years now, and I feel like I'm always growing as an artist, and when I have difficulty I fall back to references to refocus and help my mind to figure out what it is I'm trying to do. So anyway, great commentary this time.
I'm a beginner and I need a line by line step by step method. Good for those other guys that don't need this kind of stuff. Thanks so much. And may the odds be ever in your favor. Michelle.
Thank you Michelle :)
Everybody don't forget Mark has a Vol 2 of Mastering Manga due out in mid October. You can preorder from Amazon for a nice discount! I've had my copy preordered about a week. Nice going Mark!
While I love general tips, don't abandon step-by-step videos all the time. Sometimes it is nice to see how you approach drawing something very specifically.
Doing clouds is challenging, it's generally negative space on the page with a little subtle shading (unless it's a more stormy scene), your advice about looking at reference material is spot on! Study photos of your subject material, study the real thing if possible, study what other people have done in their work, but ultimately it all comes down to practice.
Thanks so much for what you do here. I'm not much into the subject material you do (manga) BUT I enjoy watching your techniques.
Wretha
Hi Mark- When I was starting off with Manga and Anime styles of drawings, I particularly found your line-by-line videos quite helpful and I began watching all your videos because of the amount of detail you put into your videos explaining how to draw. I don't think you should abandon them! They're very, very helpful to beginners and even though I'm on my own path with my own style, I still find the line-by-line videos helpful at times. General ideas and tips would help a smaller range of people.
You can incorporate both: throw in general tips while you're doing step-by-step instructions. :) But if I were to pick one, the step-by-step narration outweighs the general tips. Love you, Mark Crilley!
Mark, I think the line by line process shouldn't be completely ignored as it does give help but the general tips do help people let them put their own creativity, or even leave them room to find their own style; personally, I like that
I appreciate the step by step process. I also value the fact that you take the time to even show people how to do certain things in detail. You are awesome!
Mark, my mom surprised me with drawing supplies. She got me prismacolor pencils and the kneaded gum eraser you use. I don't think it's as soft as yours, but I was so happy when I saw they were prismacolor. I hope this vid will help me with the background for my lighthouse drawing!
Just a few things. Thanks! I want to learn coloured pencil because i can use it on any paper and i have them around, but its easy to make them look childish. Please keep line by lines, i have been watching you for a while and i still use them! For newer artists they are so helpful, and even more experienced ones can use them sometimes. Finally, any chance of some background tutorials, or ways colours and backgrounds can help set certain moods? Thanks! Oh, and as always your drawings are AWESOME!
Mark you are the only one that teach something for free in youtube and I learn so much with you in all videos all line by lines everything you make is awesome if your videos have one hour I will watch until end and over and over again great work MR.Crilley
Sometimes I just watch your videos to put me in a drawing mood idk why it just gives me the urge to draw but learning these new techniques is always amazing to become a better artist but I love you so much
man, I love your videos and I am urged to look at your series all of them
Step-by-step is really needed as well as generalized tips. Another area that you could focus on for us (your loyal followers) is foreshortening. You have touched on it in the past but I personally would like to see more. This vid was super helpful and made so sense even though I use water colors. Thank you Mark!
i like step by step/line by line videos about general principles, not that you tell us line by line, but that you show us your line by line... really what i mean is that i like real time instead of timelapse, how you you get from one place to another and how long it really takes to get there, and your process on the way.
I definitely like the general technique style videos because you can apply what you've learned in numerous places, but I think your line by lines are very good for techniques as well. So I like them both! Sometimes it's nice to flex and draw something specific utilizing a skill.
Love the videos, and look forward to them every weekend! Thanks for doing them!
You should keep the step-by-step drawing videos. They've helped me out so much and there's no other person I've ever seen who does step-by-step like you do. They mostly just show the drawing rather than explaining it to the fullest.
It kind of frustrates me when something isn't explained enough. I really enjoy knowing all of the details.
I know I've seen pretty good tutorials, but they weren't in video. Watching you draw and hearing the explanation helps the most.
Do you have any other sky-related videos?
It would be really cool if you did a video on how to draw a sunset with lots of clouds~ :3
Mark Crilley's videos has seriously enhanced my artistic abilities.
Continue the step by step, this is how I progress ! And you're the only one that explain that well the steps by steps videos, so continue!!
Mark, I love your videos, i've said this so many times and you've heard it from so many others, but you really have helped me a lot in the past. Before I started watching your videos I couldn't even scribble an image, but now I can actually draw to a decent standard. I would just like to say thank you for being awesome, as well as a fantastic teacher.
I really like these generalized videos, but I think if you are going to continue to touch on specific illustrations, maybe suggest how to apply that to someone's own illustrations, for people who do not understand how to do that already.
Something that would be greatly appreciated:
Tutorials on colors and values. What is a smart color set? How light or dark should colors be? Complementary colors like blue/orange, red/green, etc. and where those complements come from? If you wanted, you could make an entire series with it; maybe including your "composition" and "panel" videos in a playlist with them.
Please Mark, show us how to draw rain. I don't even know how to start...
ooh yeah nice question
i think imma go get a reference. but, the question is, how do i get a reference of rain in the middle of the sahara?
I think for your viewers who are a bit older, or a bit more advanced, it is good to see general techniques and the like. But i am pretty certain there are viewers that benefit from more specific, step by step videos so that they can build confidence and be able to quickly go in and draw what they want to draw. Anyway, great vid, keep up the good work.
i like a good balance of general tips and demonstrations of certain drawings. there are certain things we (or at least i) cannot draw myself from just a picture, and like having your discriptive videos teach me how to do it. its also nice to to be given useful tips and comparisons of different art styles, art supplies, etc. BTW i really love your videos and i like listening to you talk as i draw :)
Hi Mark, I've learned an incredible amount from your videos, and Mastering Manga (I've pre-ordered the next one). I am VERY thankful that I found your sight. I think that the line by line is very useful but the occasional "free style" is also very helpful. The combination between the narrated and the time-lapse is also very helpful for going back and refreshing the info you put into the narrated version... Thank You so much
I find this generalized approach to clouds very helpful. I think these clouds are great, delicate, with depth and yet remain ehtereal. Thanks so much for sharing your talent in this tutorial
I never thought I'd get used to your voice. You've turned into a Bob Ross for me. Thanks so much for your informational videos. I don't ever feel skimped, and I learn so much!
PLEASE do not give up the step by step videos. It's sad to say but I am not a very good artist yet, and your videos are such a help. Videos with general tips will help too, but please try to every once in a whole go into depth and show us exactly how you do your work.
I like the step-by-step style videos sometimes, when they come with tips it can be a helpful way to gain confidence, following along with your drawing. Not all the time, though, just now and then.
I really value your "technique" videos, and the ones where you explain the choices you make in different portions if the illustration. Those are the videos I bookmark and watch more than once, or reference when I need to do a particular effect (like a stone or brick wall.) The manga stuff is cute, but I don't look at it more than once.
I have been watching your videos for a little while now, and just wanted to say, you did this one with perfect timing. My friend has been trying to draw clouds for a while and she wants me to tell you thanks for doing this
Got so excited when I saw this thumbnail. Kiki's Delivery Service is such a great movie, even by Ghibli's standards.
I personally, and maybe thats because I've been drawing for a fair amount of time now. I prefer to see your more general video's. When I was less experienced than I am now I did watch your step by step and thats really how I learned to draw manga. Now granted this was over 2 years ago and I don't need instruction like that anymore, generalized advice on drawing something I don't understand well, for example this, is very useful to me and I'd like to see more videos like this in the future.
Mark, I think the step by step line by line videos are helpful to beginners, but they only show you how to draw those things that specific way. I think general tips are more helpful to the more experienced artist because it gives me stuff to use when I'm wanting to draw a different pose or picture, it lets your tips be helpful in our own original and creative sketch work
I've gotta say, I much prefer your tip videos. It gives me real knowledge than just 'put a line here.' It makes me so fed up with trying to follow you exactly that I get frustrated, while tips really help me out.
I enjoy both step by step and general overview videos. Think you for posting them.
this is the best video I have found for colored pencil clouds, thank you so much!!!!!
+Missy Knoll Thank you Missy! :)
Considering that pencils where never made of led and it's simply an expression/term, yes calling it a led in colored pencil is the correct term.
Step by step vids really help me a lot as I draw of how you go about drawing the line and the way each line builds and relates to each other. I find it hard to get that when u time laps.
One of your best illustrations in my opinion, Such beautiful colours!
I picked up a valuable tip from this video. Erasing the guidelines after coloring the sky is fantastic! Thanks for that.
it looks like u took a picture of some clouds out side, then edited it a cartoon witch lol nice job, mark!
I wish I could like this video more than once! SO HELPFUL!!! Thank you for posting, Mark! Great work, as always :D
+LordKhabal Thank you :)
Your clouds are the best I have seen. Very realistic. I dob't mind the time laps since once I see what you are doing with the sky and the cloud shading I don't need to watch every movement of the pencil. I think you did great and thanks for this tutorial.
Your videos are perfect in every way, time laps are perfect, some humor, your own techniques, and keeping your viewers interested(: don't change a bit!
I thoroughly enjoy both types of videos Mark and think there is a place for both, much as "Frostie" has pointed out. It was great to see this done with pencils, I use them a lot even though they do need patience and steady perseverance. Thanks for taking the time to put these together for your fans :)
Thanks so much for the video. I really enjoy the color instructions. For me general themes are good because they can be applied to a wider range of pictures. The way you did this video seems to be a good balance of specific and general. Thanks again. You are the greatest.
Lead in pencils derives from the very beginnings of pencils when actual lead was used as the drawing medium. As people became more aware of the toxicity of lead, they began using graphite mixed with clay. The ratio of graphite to clay determines the hardness of the pencil (more clay = harder). For colored pencils, clay is mixed with pigments. The part of the pencil used to create color on paper is called a 'core' in manufacturing. :)
Mark i don't know what kind of light you have but if you were to put a piece of velum paper or other kind over the light it would soften your lighting. The thicker the paper the more diffuse your light will be. I do that with the built in flash on my camera because sometimes its makes harsh shadows or glare oh what I'm shooting. Just be careful not to catch it on fire. :) Hope that helps.
I like your videos with more general tips the best. You have a lot of step-by-step videos to help people get started, and to be honest, your Mastering Manga book is probably the best all-around starting place anyway. Once I got past most of the exercises in the book, I started looking for more general tips.
By the way, more videos about watercoloring would be great, and it would help if you'd show us how you mix, what colors you start with, etc. too.
Line by Line will always be helpful, no matter what level of skill you are at when drawing, be it beginner, expert or somewhere in between. However, general ideas allow the creativity of individuals to take over, which is also important when creating art.
I like this video, found it helpful. I love your work, especially "Miki Falls"! Also love how you included Hayao Miyazaki's characters Kiki and Jiji from "Kiki's Dilvery Service" it goes very well with your theme of the sky and clouds.
HI Mark...I am a big fan of yours and I love any videos you do, but since I am a beginner, I do appreciate the step by step explanations. I know that making them is time consuming for you but really helpful, for me anyway. Thank you so much for all you do!
I think Mark should upload a drawing video in its entirety one of these days with no time lapse. People that are serious about drawing would appreciate it and learn so much more from it.
PLEASE KEEP DOING STEP BY STEP VIDEOS! Pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaase. I love them and learn a lot from them. It's also fun to watch you draw.
Your videos help me sooooo much! I always over-do my details and seeing you work on it helps a lot!
Thanks a lot for all your hard work mark , I know your probably really busy at the moment and yet u still manage to make us a video every week ,
thank you :D
Please, keep on the step-by-step explanations! They really help with the small tips that we don't usually find. Thank you!
Thank you so much for yet another amazing video, I have your Mastering Manga book and it has helped me time and again! I really enjoy this style of video, and I would not mind at all if you continue to do them this way, though I would still enjoy seeing some step-by-steps on occasion for trickier things.
While I could never be able to draw as amazingly as you it's awesome to see how professional do it
Very helpful! And I don't mind the time lapse at all because it's easy to get the idea just fine still and it saves time so that I can just get straight to drawing!
I have to agree that general tips would be more useful than line-by-line instructions. In particular, I am interested in the human figure and drawing it in various poses and from different angles. The sort of thing that would be useful for comics or graphic novels.
Mark i am speechless when I see u draw. You have this amazing talent for drawing. You should enter some kind of drawing championship.
You are the best. Bye
Oh, I forgot to vote. As much as I like these kinds of videos, I really enjoy the the step by steps too. Please don't stop doing them. And yes, more color videos would be cool too.
In my opinion, Mark's videos are more appropriated to intermediary and advanced drawers who need general tips on how to improve some specific skills, or starters who are stuck with something in particular. People tell him about recurring troubles and then he makes a video about his methods and techniques to overcome them - but he won't do the whole job, otherwise he would be creating copyists and we need personality. And we should always remember that drawing improves basically by practicing.
I prefer both. Step by step, and line by line, I enjoy following along with you. But general ideas and tips is etrmely great as well. So yea, I'm 50/50 really.
Love you Mark! I saw your Mastering Manga book in Michael's and i was like, MARK CRILLEY!!!!!! I GOTTA GET THIS!
I like the step by step videos. If I want to draw something in a different position or something, I practice that way until I have it.
Mark I've got mastering manga 1, 2 and brody's ghost 1, 2 too and they have improved my drawings a lot. Plus I sometimes love these songs u make. They are awesome too.
Thank you
+Shashwat Kumar Thank you so much!
+markcrilley why when im gonna do drawing why my hand hand is so shakey
I think the step by step tutorials are really helpful to those who really need guidance on how to draw certain thing, so I would say to continue doing step by step tutorials
Lead is just what we call the substance of what we're using to draw or write.
We use to in a general way so that everyone knows that we're referring to whats inside
I like to mix both markers and color pencils ^^ Very often I make the base color with markers and then I add texture and variation with color pencils. Not always, but I have noticed that it works rather well for me. Color pencils are more forgiving, because I can even erase them if something goes wrong.
DON'T DO IT!!!
I like your step by step its really helpful for those who don't know how to do those things,I'm not saying I don't know how to do that but when I first started drawing I watch your videos and other stuff but mostly yours.Don't let what other people say if they don't like what your doing they can watch something else or mute it, but some people like the step by step so keep it up.
It looks so Awesome! I really want to get the Mastering Manga book, I love watching all the videos, tips and step by step is fine.
Well,I think that I personally like Generalized tips WITH the step by step actions. For example when he said he was drawing his clouds he said it's best to look at reference. That's a really good tip.See how other artist AND real photos work together.it's important.Other tips such as telling viewers not to be afraid of getting this area to dark or light.Or when you are shading with colored pencil talk about the values and how different shading techniques work with different affects.tips like that.
re:"I saw your Mastering Manga book in Michael's and i was like, MARK CRILLEY!!!!!! I GOTTA GET THIS!"
--Thank you so much! ^_^ ~Mark
I like both types of videos, general and line by line :) but whatever you take the time to give us, we'll take and enjoy! Thank you for your vids, they are always very nice.
Thanks for this useful step by step video.
I love your work mate! Excellent stuff. I dont mind time laps at all.
I really enjoyed the video and felt it to be very helpful. It’s the first video I’ve seen of yours and was glad you used colored pencils as that’s what I’m attempting. You’re very good at explaining things and I will watch more of them.
OMG ITS KIKI!!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!
I actually recently got new cats, and one of them was black! I NAMED HIM GIGI!!!!!
Abigail Jarrett Jiji
+Abigail Jarrett MY CAT IS NAMED JIJI
You're a great artist Mark, hope to become as good as you some day!
I do not comment very often but I just want to say I really enjoy watching your videos and want to thank you for the effort of making them for us.
I love your step-by-step "line-by-line" videos :) it really helps when you are just starting out drawing a new thing, like clouds :) Sure, general videos are great but in something so detailed such as this, step-by-step is what I prefer. ~Bailey (P.S. The time lapsing was perfectly placed in this video and I loved Kiki!)
This video was awesome! Thanks Mark and please dont stop step by step
They really do look realistic :D At first I was doubting you because I dislike the shades that a pencil gives for a background but this turned out quite good.
keep doing step by step and keep doing colored pencil drawings, i think i'm not the only one here that would have a hard time getting 50+ different pastels or watercolor paint, colored pencils are the cheapest and easiest to learn coloring tools for new people and can still bring along some in depth techniques for experienced artists
What i'd like to see you draw sometime in the future is a manga black manga girl with afro hair but with good detail on the hair, with some visible small curls
Awesome clouds, I've had issues with mine in the past but this is definitely the way to go. Thanks again!
please dont not abandon the step by step and line by line drawing videos!!
Mark! You should do a video on your artwork supplies. For instance your pencils, pens, sketch books, etc.
I'm not sure if you already have a video of this but if not please do one! I'm interested in purchasing your "Mastering Manga with Mark Crilley" Book, and I want to know what supplies you use, and what you recommend for anime style drawing.
