Drawing a manga style background

- This is something I wanted to try for some time now - when I came to Japan one of the things I did was studying the way Japanese comics are made and also tried to make some by myself. I love the traditional methods - ink and pen on paper and manually pasted raster sheets but somehow over time, I moved to something I felt more at ease with - painting digitally and in color.
Tools used:
* Sketch: 0.5mm mechanical pencil with blue leads
* Lines: Pilot black drawing ink
* Lines: Saji-pen and Maru-pen from Tachikawa
* Raster effects: Deleter brand raster sheets

We all need a beans break sometimes.
What kind of beans is he eating? Maybe I'll draw better if I eat those.

*THIS MAN EATEN BEANS!*
Beans break needs to be a thing from now on. Hahhaa

He draw a perfect straight line like nothing
Me; what?how?
Practice
Is this the power of a god?
Did you practice something
and he did it a bunch of times in a raw 0 _ 0
He uses his whole arm, i’ve been getting better at doing that as well and it surprisingly makes a big difference even tho it’s a bit awkward at first!
"I am not really good at it.."
...yeah..me too..
Imagine making an masterpiece just for a tutorial
Damnnnnnn
an masterpiece ? :)))
🥶
Just so you guys know, most aspects of manga is made digitally, even if the art is traditional pen on paper, don't be too pressured with buying screen tones, if you can, just scan your art into your computer and find programs where you can insert digital screen tones, you can even make them yourself, also most of the latest manga, like for example mha, create shadows digitally by using Grey tones, so if your looking for a more cleaner style, use crosshatching and Grey shadows(it's just easier for mangakas to keep to a schedule this way, also I noticed this guy didn't use a ruler, mangakas do most of the time)
Yeah I've spent good part of past few years stressing myself if I'd ever be able to catch up to ppl drawing like this.
I like drawing with details too but am stressing in how to transfer my pencil art format to digital art and keep details and my OCD in check. xD
I am on lookout for ways to both save time and learn more.
@@arno439 my advice is stick to what you're comfortable with on digital, coz the switch from paper to digital is alot, but if u keep a mindset of "art is art" then ur transfer to digital will come over time, you dont even need to draw on digital to start, you can transfer your line work from paper to your pc, or art tablet to paint, coz supplies for paint and colour pencils is costly, and once you decide to make the full switch it will become easier, coz u've already got the painting part out of the way, now its just getting into sketching, and line work, so to get more into digital that would be a good start, as transferring line work to digital is what most mangakas used to do, but now with covid its mostly digital start to finish
"It took me long time, and I am not good at it". Man, you did this drawing in a day? It's a day's work all right for a professional mangaka, and you are very good at it. Seriously. Just draw, write your manga, and I wish you a prompt and successful serialization soon. Good luck!
03:25 if I try to do those lines I would immediately mess it up. I was nervous for a second there but of course you have amazing control and it’s perfect 👌
Those parallel lines are so on point! Also, very nice to see this before Inktober ^_^ very inspirational. Some Japanese Mangakas are just out of this world. Can't imagine what it would be like, seeing their work live. Beautiful piece!
beans break!
"Ok, beans are ready". Nice touch, man!
Am I the only one that loves his accent?
Wow, I love your process and how you share how both your personal and work routines are incorporated. Excellent work
I can't describe how much I love this.
Man we really need more traditional backgrounds painting from you >-
I think I saw your name in a space dandy episode credits. Was I dreaming?
Nope I did backgrounds for the episode 08. :)

its always so interesting and inspiring to see all the process behind your illustrations, keep up the great work!
Masterpiece. Just a pure masterpiece and i would love to see it colored.
If there was such a thing as traveling inside paintings yours would be the first I would travel into! You did such a fantastic job and I always end up learning new techniques and supplies while watching your videos. I usually paint with watercolors but after watching this I'll give pen & ink a try👍
It's great to see you try other stuffs , Love It
Aww.. That's so nice. I really love your compositions, I think that's what makes you unique.
You're the best illustrator on RUclips in my opinion, I absolutely love everything you paint or draw!
Wow!! Watching you start filling everything in with a pen is amazing
This was magical to watch (and also encouraging to go and try out things you're not necessarily familiar with)
This is so good, I can tell you really love what you do .
Thanks for making this video short, simple and easy to understand
Your narration made the video so relaxing to watch!
Wow. Out of this world good. My favorite artist hands down.
I had no idea that was how manga artists got that dot effect in their shadows! I always figured it was done by hand. Very cool!
From experience, I’d say never go all the way across with a single line on a tree when hatching - unless it’s dark enough to warrant a hatch in the other direction too. It can look like part of the texture like a birch tree or something. And then it becomes an unnatural uniform bark texture instead of shadow. Beautiful work! I thought they looked great.
so much detail. that's great.
This is so inspiring! Thank you for sharing your work.
Such a pleasure to watch- nice job
Absolutely amazing!! And loved that you set yourself breaks - always important!!
WOW! This looks amazing and it gave me quite a bit of insperation to want to do something myself :))
It's a very nice illustration, I like that you show different kinds of art supplies every now and then. It keeps the vidios fresh. ♥ Love from Slovakia
Wow. This is amazing. I was starting making my own manga and I had trouble drawing backgrounds so I searched some videos in RUclips. I found this and it really helps a lot. But I am really surprised that you draw those parallel lines so neatly. Good job and keep up the good work.👍😁😊

Never considered using a raster effect before, but I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for sharing! God bless

Amazing, your skills translate pretty well to the inks!
All of your videos are stunning n so inspiring ...

Bro thats aweosome!
Amazing work as always!
You've done such a great job, even if you're not used to it. It's good that a art you make it's not only in your safety zone. ;)

i love the beans break so much!
Great video! Just the inspiration I need for INKTOBER thank you Mateus!

I love yoooooou that's what I was waiting for aaa
insanely steady hand, legit does 23589 straight lines without failure
That is amazing omfg
I really like this
this is so good 😥
I'm blown away as always. Mateusz, you must be about the only person who saw this and wasn't satisfied, haha. Thanks for the upload :) .
This was a great video I enjoyed it. 👍
so nice! thank you
I love pen and ink. Guptil's Rendering In Pen and Ink is a good book if you've not seen it. Lots of examples of arcitecture and surrounding trees, with a focus on suggestion over outline that is interesting.
I think if you're not printing in black and white, it's fine to use a grey marker or diluted ink instead of raster. Raster has a very characteristic look though.
Amazing!
Wow so cool
The line shadowing is so hard but I love aot and isayama does that and it looks good so I do it as well
amazing
Kana’s got good taste! JoJo’s dope 😎. Great video btw, your work is beautiful!
Genialnie to wygląda :D
This is why i prefer traditional over digital

Painstakingly beautiful (don't even know if that is proper English but it expresses what I want to say 😜). I always prefer the pre-photoshop version.
OMG JOJO EXABISHSHSSIOOON 😩😩😩
Aw, it's you and Kana walking down a leafy path together!
you are very inspirational....
This is incredible. And you didn't even use rulers?!
3:23 holy shit that steady hand!
