  • Today I'm reacting to Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé singing How Can I go On Live at La Nit in 1988. Montserrat Caballé, was a Catalan Spanish operatic soprano who Freddie adored!
This is my first time ever watching and hearing them perform the sing and just wow!

Hi I'm Doe, I live in England with my partner and our little jack russell. I make RUclips videos about all the things I love, so you will see a lot of Beatles and Queen related content, music reviews and reactions, vinyl record hauls and unboxings and showing my record collection. Also we are both vegan and love plants and love growing our own food on our allotment and tasting new vegan food. I love art so you will see some creative projects on here as well as fashion, especially from the 50s/60/70s, I love that vintage style. I also vlog from time to time, especially if I'm travelling or showing you parts of England, hiking in the country, out on the motorbike or exploring a medieval castle.

Montserrat remembered to that night this way: "While he was singing, I noticed that his eyes were shiny with tears. I gave him my hand. He clasped it and kissed it. It was clear he was suddenly aware of his own fate. They were tears of farewell. It was his goodbye, at least to the stage." ♥

Yes indeed it was sadly to be the last ever time we would see Freddie on stage in a live setting. This was October 1988. He still looked ok but now not capable of singing live so had to mime instead.

Rumor has it that when Montsy put her hand out.. and Freddie took it, he had tears in his eyes.. so she didn’t let go. It’s obvious they truly loved each other.. btw.. please listen to the words of this song… they’re profound and amazing.

Freddie really was something else. I've always loved the Barcelona album. It was so unique back in the day. After that, many other artists have tried to do their version of opera/rock/pop thing, but I think that nobody even came close to it.

Hello Doe, from Seville, Spain. I have been seeing your reaction to this song and you are not the only one who is moved and tears fall. If a human being has a heart, it is normal to express feelings before such a wonderful interpretation and song perfect and after no longer having Freddie with us who died so young with so much talent and Monserrat a soprano with a voice that touches heaven. This song is sublime and Golden Boy is another masterpiece. Freddie with Queen demonstrated his great talent, but here with Montsi they go up a step together and take music to touch the sky together.
You are a beautiful Englishwoman inside and out. Greetings from Spain, beautiful! I'm subscribing to your channel because you seem like a woman with a big heart and you're perfect for reacting to songs.

ohhhhhh boyyyyy.... As soon as Montsie started singing, my waterworks started.
These lyrics are so significant: IDK how many people know that - at this time - Montsie was one of very FEW who knew of Freddie's terminal AIDS diagnosis. (He didn't tell his bandmates until 1989!) Mary Austin knew, I assume Jim Hutton and maybe Peter Freestone. (I’m sure someone else will know if this is right/correct me!)
Montsie had been excited for the prospect of Fred & her singing "Barcelona" at the Barcelona 1992 Olympics… Fred confided in her that he wouldn't be able to perform with her, then... "because he would be no more" (as Montsie put it in an interview later).
…And, they truly adored/respected each other! After Freddie was gone, Montsie was asked by other non-opera singers to do collaborations like she had with Fred... She turned them all down, because she said that "it would never be the same". When Freddie's statue was placed on the waterfront of Lake Geneva in Montreux, Switzerland, Montsie was there right next to Fred’s parents for the dedication ceremony.
(My “mushy” emotional state today also has to do with it being my Mom’s birthday. We were BFs, I took care of her when she became unwell/she passed away back in 1995… Still feels like it was yesterday.)🫶

Freddie took a huge leap forward to fulfil his dream to sing with Monserrat. He became a legendary cross over from Rock to Opera. Freddie opened the door for future collaborations. He was a pioneer and the aftermath became the new thing in music crossover. Freddie had the insight for expansion and inhancement to his career, even if he was dying of Aids. Very brave was he.

oh it is not just you ---- this video makes me cry, gives me chills too. His voice is beyond compare, as is Montserrat's. And knowing that he knew he was going to die within two years, makes it SO poignant, it's almost unbearable. Like you, this song is now one of my favorites, or maybe my very favorite of Freddie's.

Listening to the music of the band Queen, it's like seeing Michelangelo's paintings from the Sistine Chapel or listening to Beethoven's symphonies.

    .
In the description area, there are links to each song performance. Enjoy!

The original version shown to the world of "Barcelona" was the live version from La Nit in 1988. Even thought the first live version was one year before at Ku Ibiza.

i can’t work out whether montserrat’s reaction was to freddie doing that amazing powerful ‘is anybody there’ or if that was part of the performance but i’d love to know as if it was, it was how i reacted and i thought i knew what freddie could do before, amazing stuff
