Freddie was a huge fan of Montserrat Caballé. What he didn't know was that she was also a huge fan of his. Montserrat said that Freddie had the right tone for each note. Two world legends of music.

Love your reactions :) Montserrat Caballé was a world renowned opera diva. Freddie was obsessed, and was so nervous before they met but they got on so well and had an amazing friendship. Mutual respect and in interviews with her after Freddie left, you can see how much she loved him. Would have been amazing if they had had the chance to do more music together. If you can, listen to the whole Barcelona album, it shines. RIP to both these legends

Goosebumps!!! I heard that before they performed together Freddie was concerned about what to do with his urge to move & feel the music but someone said have you seen opera stars perform? That’s all they do.. 😂😂 You can see it on Freddie’s face how fortunate he was to be with her!! You’re right ... Montsy showed great restraint & control singing with Freddie. Deep respect! Now you gotta do THE GOLDEN BOY, GUIDE ME HOME, HOW CAN I GO ON 🎼🎼🎼

Great reaction. I never thought that FREDDIE could sing Opera. I knew that FREDDIE was one of the greatest singers ever but Opera. Well he showed us another side to himself. I guess I should never underestimate how talented this man is. To me FREDDIE is the greatest singer ever. Love this song. I also love HOW CAN I GO ON and THE GOLDEN BOY too. I also found another song that FREDDIE did called EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE where FREDDIE just goes off with the Operatic singing. Thank you BECKY for doing QUEEN I find out that my day goes better if I hear QUEEN play atleast once a day. Take care and have a good day. Your friend, QUEEN BEE.

Everyone knows what an outstanding talent Freddie was, but I want to thank you for your appreciation of Montserrat Caballé (Cah ball YAY). She passed in 2018 and was considered one of the last great opera divas. She was a Spanish soprano from Barcelona and while still alive, had a street in that city named for her. Known as La Superba, her breath control is legendary (she's known for holding a note for 22+ seconds) as is her pianissimo -- the ability to sing very high notes very softly which is not an easy thing to do (she does that twice in this song). Separately they were each outstanding in their own right, but together they were an amazing experience.

Exercises in free love was written and recorded originally by Freddie to show Montsy what he would do vocally to compliment her voice. He played it to her when they first met. Shortly after, before they recorded together he attended a performance of hers, she knew he was there and to honour and surprise him, she performed it that night. They do a duet version of it on their album, though his original version was a b-side to his single of The Great Pretender.

This was recorded with all of the instruments being synthesiser sounds. In more recent years the vocal tracks have been put to proper orchestra for the whole album they did, you can hear the difference, it now sounds like it always should have. Recommend you check out the full album, also called Barcelona.

You did pretty well pronouncing Mont/Ser/At and Cab/Er/Ray. Freddie was blown away when he heard her sing a small part at a Pavarotti opera. “Monsy” as he called her is a soprano opera singer actually famous for being able to sing high notes softly and with long breaths. She met him at his house to see if they wanted to sing a song together. She stayed through the night, until 6am singing with him as he tried melodies on the piano. She told him she might be too old and heavy. He told her music doesn’t care. She asked him how many songs a rock album made. He told her 9 or 10. So she said “Let’s do that!” Thus Freddie wrote the album Barcelona and created a rock and opera masterpiece with his beloved Monsy.

6:22 Even as an opera enthusiast, I understand this. It can feel weird if you are not into the opera genre and used to that style. So I get it.
But why this collaboration works so well even for those outside the opera genre, is the very reason Montse is so special as a soprano. She is especially known for her remarkable voice- and breath control - and pianissimo. (Which means very soft and quiet)
You might want to check it out, it’s absolutely wonderful. I’ll link it below 😊
