- ESEE has so many options, that sometimes it is tough to decide which knife is best for you and what your intended purpose is. The ESEE 3 is the most versatile knife they make...in my opinion. But what options do you go with? Do you choose the S35VN? Or the 1095? What handle material or shape do you choose? These are all things one must think about when shopping for a knife. If your budget is tight, and you can't have a drawer full of knives to choose from, what do you do? Hopefully, this little video gives you some ideas.

I’ll get the s35vn izula. You’ve convinced me. Everyday pocket carry in the summer heat and sweat. Just makes sense to get the stainless model. And I don’t mind using my pocket knives for food prep.

Thank you. That was very informative. I have been going back on forth on 1095 vs S35VN. I even emailed esee about it but didn't hear back. Now Im positive on G10 over Micarta and for me, S35VN is a better choice.

Everyone get onboard and get Esee to make the Esee 3 in s35vn but in the same thickness as the Esee 4, i believe it would then become one of the best knives of all time. Proper all round knife!
Hey mate, if you want to make carbon steel go an awesome black colour, cut up a heap of banana bushes or use some bananas (slower).

Awesome little knife! I love the RAT design knives though I've never owned an Esee. But my Ontario RATs have been really awesome, tough knives and never needed replacing. Thank you for the tidbits of "inside" info! My favorite thing about your channel is I always learn something.

I've never had an Ontario version. For no other reason than I guess I just never thought about it. Now that Ontario is kaput, perhaps I should look into owning one just to make a comparison. Hmmmm. You got me thinking.

Dang. About 6 hours prior to your reply, I bought one on eBay for 79.00. Not sure which steel version I'm going to get. The switched from 1095 to 1075 at some point but there are no markings to determine which is which...at least that I know of yet. I'll keep researching. I managed to buy one that comes in the plastic sheath like the ESEE. I look forward to getting it and giving it a whirl.

@@knifetimestory you're welcome! I know they switched the RAT series to 1075 in 2017. I have a newer RAT 7 in 1075 and I have to say IF there is a major difference in edge retention from my old one in 1095, I'm not cutting enough for it to be noticeable. But I DO appreciate that 1075 is supposed to be a tougher steel. By the way the grinds on the newer Ontario's are not what they once were, but I know you'll be putting your own edge on it either way haha! ✌️
@@knifetimestory by the way... to determine between the 1075 and 1095, (I know for a fact this is true with the SP series knives and the government fighting knives,) the older 1095 blades were stamped and the newer ones in 1075 are laser etched. Rat series may be different. Either way I hope you enjoy it! Ontarios have served me well over the years! ✌️
I have both versions of the 3 . The S35vn knife is my dedicated skinner . The 1095 version is my edc beater . I don’t baton with it but I do pry and scrape a lot .I’d buy another 4 if they thinned down to 1/8” .

I have an Esee 3 with the S35VN but haven’t used it because I don’t care for the thin/short handle. Gonna try to make liners for it and see how that goes. I really want that knife to feel good in the hand…and great video as always Tom!

You must have enormous hands if the ESEE 3 is too short. Wow. Perhaps the liners will help. I have done a video about how I do it but have not posted it yet. You do have one very important piece of the puzzle though, the stainless version. Doing it with the 1095 version is a little more touch and go due to the coating.
Just made the liners from the same craftsman plastic lid you used….lol, and what a difference! Totally changed this knife.

Yes, those are kinda thick. The darker red ones I'm using are thinner. Got them from a Sterilite mop bucket.
I just got a ESEE 6hm for a bush craft knife 🔪 I wouldn’t recommend battoning with it but it feels great in the hands.
I find the 6 to be awkward. It just does not have enough weight to be a good a chopper. But, the 5 does have the weight, but not the right handle shape for that task and is therefor replaced by the BK2. Same blade length, thickness but a handle that is much more conducive to chopping!! I've had a few 6's but always end up getting rid of them. Just can never bond with it.

Captain - Xancuda vs. 3 in the stainless? What say you?? I hate the scales on the Xancuda but I like the smaller size. What is the source for the replacement Xancuda scales you mentioned. I do prefer the G10 for the reasons you mention. Micarta is very absorbent.
I bought the Xancudo scales on eBay. There is a guy selling them for many of the ESEE models. Glad I'm not alone on the G10 thing. It really is just a better material. Maybe not as fun and doesn't patina like the other stuff, but it sure is durable and easy to hold onto in all conditions.

Love the reviews bro. Just a person being themselves, I love it. That's how I make my videos. I'm just me. I also have addictions to buying knives and guns including the same thing over and over. I have a nickel S&W Model 36 snub square butt with fake pearl, a blued one that is identical even made the same year then I just got a 3 inch square butt blued one that is a pre-model lol. I just subscribed.

I often asked myself that as a kid when I was eating rare chicken and turkey prepared by my mom who had no business cooking. But, on the bright side, I can now eat just about road kill and not get sick. My system learned how to handle it.
question: where can one get some "hardware" after adding liners? (also prefer wider handle) - nothing useful from esse upon enquiry for the same.
Not an easy thing to get. I'm fortunate in that so many of them have been in my possession that I have a collection of hardware from different models. I've found that the hardware from the 4 will suffice when you put liners in the 3. Maybe they will sell you some.

I really enjoy the ESEE Izula 2 one of my favorite knives. Do you think the ESEE 3 is a worthy upgrade?
I have no issue carrying the 3 around all day. I forget it is there. However, it really is a big jump in size albeit thinner. If you are used to just having the Izula 2 on your belt or in your pocket, then the 3 is not a replacement. You will be able to handle much larger tasks with the 3. I'd rather skin a deer with the 3 over either Izula. Even in the kitchen I prefer the 3 because of the blade thinness.

What about the bk9
Great knife, but I prefer my Scrap Yard Knives 9". Beefier, swings better and I like the rubber handle for a knife that large. BK7 is as large as I want from Becker. I love my BK7.
I have a few with the regular black coating. I took the black coating off a izula I have and put on black g10 scales. I’ll use it for food sometimes. I ordered a izula 2 with the black oxide blade. Haven’t received it yet. What are your thoughts on that finish?
First of all, good call on the G10 for food prep. Micarta likes to absorb E. coli.
The black oxide finish is weird. It will rub off on a cloth when wet. It will stain any food you cut like onions, potatoes, and meat. It actually makes the surface more prone to retaining water as the surface has been etched and has lots of convenient pores for the water to hang out in.
I used lots of Simichrome on mine and kept polishing the blade until the cotton cloth (an old washcloth) stopped turning black. Took a LONG time. It was only then that I felt comfortable using that knife.
As far as whether or not the black staining it will leave on your food (unpolished and out of the box) is bad for you...I don't know. I do find it totally unappetizing.

My ESEE 3 had liners too. I sold it because it was too short. Oh, and also because I'm stupid.
As you know, I like the ESEE 3 HM, but I wish it was stainless with a kydex sheath.
I miss the Xancudo, but it was also too short. Dangit.
I would actually have preferred a Randall or Dozier disappear. I worked years to get that ESEE just the way I like it. Oh well. Now I can try and replicate it, with the new logo on the blade however and red rather than green liners.
Tough to believe the 3HM fits your hand. There is actually less handle girth with that one than there is with the regular 3. If you were to get a regular 3 in S35VN and add liners, you would have a thicker knife and a plastic sheath to put it in.
I've sold and given away knives I would like back. That is not stupid. Plus, with ESEE, they are all basically identical and replaceable.
@@knifetimestory I have in fact noticed that the 3HM is a bit smallish around, but the length seems to fit ok. I found that with the regular 3 I was always looking for length.
I think I've said before that the 3hm is my answer to the Izula. But honestly, I prefer kydex for my small knives. I may make myself a kydex sheath for it.
I have liners on my BK 16. Couldn't imagine it without. Liners are great. Might try another ESEE 3 with liners.... 🤔
You may find that making a kydex sheath for it could be tough. I think that is why ESEE offers it only in a leather sheath. There is nothing for the kydex to "grab" onto to keep it from falling out if you held it upside down. If you don't plan on doing any hand stands, then I guess you would be fine!!!

Thank you for your vote. You can't purchase one like mine, because they do not make them in that configuration. The S35VN came with a black handle. I swapped out the handles and made the liners.

Well, eBay may be a place to find some scales. I've simply accumulated so many after years of tinkering. I have no issue with buying a knife just to part it out to get the hardware or anything else I want from it. If you buy a 4 with 3D scales, you could probably use the hardware on your 3 with liners. If your liners are too fat, you can countersink the holes. Or, you could go to a hardware store and see what they have in the "specialty fasteners" department and see if you can cobble something together.
I believe ESEE does not simply sell handles or hardware. Most knife makers don't because they don't want you using their stuff possibly on a knife that is not theirs.
@@ROE1300 The Knife Connection sells 3-D scales for most of the Esee’s and they come with the appropriate hardware . Esee also sells replacement scales and hardware on their site as well just not the new 3-D scales .
Ahhhh. Good to know. Thank you. HOWEVER...remember, order the hardware for the ESEE 4 so you can fit liners in. All the scales are the same thickness. I hope this works out and makes adding liners easier.
I’ve thought about food prep with micarta before, knowing if I cut a jalapeño it might not come out lol, But never raw chicken that is a bad idea

I told a few people their beautiful patina is from all the dirt and oil of whatever the hands touched prior . Boogers , weiners and butts . Comet cleans them up good for me .
Yikes. That is one sure way to get lots of guys scrubbing the heck out of their handles. Gross!!!

The oils part I can live with. I like it when it darkens and patinas. I have a leather handled Randall 3-5 that just looks better and better with each passing year. No buggers, weiners or butts!!!!
Wonder what the result of some boiled linseed oil rubbed into the micarta would turn out like...🤔
Hmmm. Never thought of that. I wonder. I'm not going to be the first to give it a whirl, simply because I want this one to age gracefully and naturally. Otherwise, I'd spray it with WD-40 and call it a day!! Thanks for watching and commenting.

The HM version of this knife is also really nice, I was thinking of buying one for a hunting knife. And im still waiting for my buck 110. Some political crap started here, and now people are protesting by blocking the roads. I just want my knife man, this is taking forever
I've had the HM version and quite frankly, did not like it. Much to my surprise. I liked the girth of the handle, but the overall circumference was too small. The regular version has more handle. Plus, I did not like the leather sheath.
I hope you get your 110 soon.
I can't write here how I feel the road blockers should be handled. However, I do have a snow plow on the front of my truck.

That is a good question. I have had one. I will admit… I was not a big fan. I have large/extra large hands. On the one hand, I do like the roundness of the handle. On the other hand I found it to be too small. I prefer the added girth of The standard handle. Especially with liners. Also… I like how the traditional version comes with the plastic sheath and pops in quite securely. That can’t be done with the HM. That is why they come with a leather sheath.

Ahhh. I really did not think it came with a Kydex sheath. Both of mine came leather. Hmmm. Either way though, I prefer my liner mod and the original handle. Thanks for the info!!
@@knifetimestory One of the reasons I like it a little better is that there is no finger choil. Not a big fan of choils. I like to be able to choke up on the blade while still having that extra cutting length and blade closer to my index finger for better control. Just a not picky personal preference though. I have all variations of the Esse 3.
Yep, I get it. I bought it for that exact reason. Now I just secretly dull and round the part of the edge that is closest to the choil to give just a little buffer between "all is well and oops".

Do you really believe they are worth what they cost now? I mean there are so many options nowadays that are cheaper better steel the only difference is country of manufacturing.
I bought a Utica utkn2 a few years ago. I was looking for my idea of a survival knife. Which is a knife you always have, yet is capable of doing what you need to survive. Basically I was looking for a izula 2 type or size. I was about to buy the izula 2 when I found the Utica. It was $40 but what set it apart was the real kydex sheath. Secondly the blade was ground much better. My problem with esee is the thick blade.
I believe the warranty is a gimmick. Personally if my knife fails it’s normally under warranty. The real issue if a knife I have breaks it’s a design flaw. I don’t want another one of the same flaw.
1095 is basically the cheapest steel yet esee and tops charge ridiculous prices.
I don’t understand why American manufacturers don’t want to make affordable useful knives. Everything made in America if it has anything new then they want to charge ridiculous prices. Like benchmade and the atlas lock.
I do believe they are worth it. Really have not gone up that much in price over the years. I don't like the Utica because it is skeletonized.
One of the things I like about ESEE is the owners, employees and the community associated with it.
@@knifetimestory you know only the neck knife is skeletonized the 3 in knife is g10 with a better sheath and is only $50. Where a esee is over $100 for a basic knife.
I like Esse knives, but I wouldn’t buy one. It’s a knife! Why would you spend that kind of money on something like this. And if you were in a deserted area or a major natural disaster once the blade gets dull your screwed. What are you going to sharpen it with?
Hmmm. Were you aware that before fancy sharpening stones were developed, folks used...wait for it...stones. Yep, a simple stone will put a working edge on a knife. So will the edge of a car window, or smooth worn concrete. See. Not screwed. You will be screwed because you have nothing at your disposal to help you fashion any other sort of tool to help you survive.

I don’t think it’s going to be as easy as what you’re saying. To many high end knife metals don’t sharpen easily, even with a stone! A car window?! Yes is works especially with 1095 carbon bucks 420HC, the lower grade softer metals. That’s why many outdoor enthusiasts, etc use 1095. Even though it is an amazing idea to have a super metal on a knife work that way is not easily accomplished, that’s why I said I like Esse knives, but I’d rather have something that can easily be reshaped. This is my opinion.

Finding something to sharpen your knife on and keeping it harp isn't a huge issue if you have the skillset and knowledge to do it. You need to work on your sharpening skills, and it won't be such a huge hang-up for you.
