I like to think you didn’t hire Jacques, he just keeps showing up when he senses epic gardening lol
^ Accurate
😂😂😂
💖
In the Caribbean we eat watercress like you would eat lettuce. It is very good in sandwiches also. You can make a salad mix with it.
If when you buy the watercress and they have their roots on them still, you can place it in water and it will continue to grow.
This feels like a gardening mukbang 😂
It so does but I am totally here for it
Loool this is so accurate
LOL
🤣 Exactly
You guys are flipping through the seed packs like kids with baseball cards. It’s great!
Kevin and Jacques give off an older brother, younger brother dynamic 😊
Kevin: what are you doing here? I didn't invite you
Jacques: I'm here to sow seeds with you 🌱
Your bromance always brings a smile to my face. You too are hilarious 😆.
*two
I'd ship them.
I love the playful banter between you n the garden hermit. He's like your sidekick now!
This is the most wholesome convo bet two men 💚 I'm a mom of 4 and I watch this while folding clothes @ 2 in the morning. Feels like hanging out with friends ❤️
Loved the "👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 cut this" part lol. Felt awkward 👀 like I was watching yall illegally 🤣 as illegal as your seed/plant imports lol
We left that in on accident!
@@epichomesteading haha, it was a magical moment
Time stamp?! Lol!
Felt like behind the scenes to me. I enjoyed it as well 😁
It was pretty cool and human.
Don’t hurt on kohlrabi! It’s a great healthy substitute for potatoes (lower glycemic index, more fiber and nutrients). We eat the rounded stem portion and leaves roasted, in stir fry, raw in salads, and our favorite- fritters. It is much easier to grow than broccoli (slower to bolt) and is rarely woody. We grow spring and fall crops of Terek and Kossak (giant) varieties in Zone 8a. When the apocalypse comes, it’s our subsistence crop!
An elderly family friend once told my husband (when he was a kid) to loosely roll up newspaper and lay it in the garden where earwigs were a problem, leave it overnight, and throw it out in the early morning. The earwigs crawl in to shelter from the sun, so they get tossed out with the paper. It seemed to work last year, just bring a garbage bag with you to the paper, so they don't jump out. I loved listening to you two, but now I have to go start some winter seedlings. Thanks for the inspiration!
Wow, wish I had read this at the beginning of summer! Tip I’ll use for next season! Thnx
You left in a part you meant to cut 😂 it was like seeing bloopers or extras
Best video ever super chill, and I can come back to it every year, and ofcouse see How Jaque got started
“I only want things that I can eat” this is what I said too! Starting to appreciate growing flowers with different colors too.
I love how you started laughing at Jacques’ entry while looking down at your seeds. You couldn’t even hold it together! Sincere comedy!
Love how supportive you are of jacque, I guess you just like watching things grow!
I’m not gonna lie… I did dishes and folded laundry while I watched this because I’m in zone 7b, and well it’s a bit too late to sow seeds (tho
I just direct sowed some greens…). Either way, it was such a joy to hang out with you!
Glad to keep you company!
Same... 7 A/B East TN here. It's getting super overcast and just slightly chillier. All the gardens are winding down here!
@@james_thegirl hortube with Jim Putnam gardens in zone 7B. In Raleigh N.C. where I live also. Has a lot of knowledge.
@@james_thegirl yes I'll always watch this channel as love it so much bur agree with you, would be great to also find someone in Zone 6b and first frost date mid to late September.
I love everything about the show Kevin .. muscle hermit and the fact that I heard the police sirens in the background is just epic....
So I’m in CA also, and was obsessed with water cress at one point… if you happen to have an air conditioning drainage pipe on the north side of your house, you can grow water cress in a pot right under the constant drip… if you wanted to… it is possible. Lol 😝 I did it!!
I had to watch this twice. Not only lots of great info but I laughed so much I’m sure I missed some good info! Love u guys!!
Love the banter, would watch these all day
Hey guys not to be mean to anybody or anything but you both are a treasure you guys are magic the way it works between you and jock keep it up all the harvests in the world to you
Endive and escarole are the same species, just different cultivars. They get more bitter in summer, and less in cold weather, but I love the bitterness. If you slice escarole finely and season with plenty of salt, lime and olive oil it is amazingly bitter in a good way. Even though I don’t eat cheese anymore, it is amazing under the cheese in pizza, precisely because the bitterness interacts with the salty fatty cheese.
Love this format! It's like chilling in the backyard talking with friends while you get little jobs done. Epic! 👍
With my rapini I just threw the seeds willy nilly in the bed. I think they all sprouted because there's a lot. I'm thinking about throwing a second sewing.
Omg I loooooove kohlrabi! But I will say it has been the hardest thing to grow for me. But when it comes in, man! Kohlrabi, Butternut, Potatoes, and Kale fresh outta the oven is chef's kiss *muah*
I diced mine up and put to in my chicken soup that I canned. I have to hide vegetables from my family so they'll eat it
Kohlrabi is friggin delicous... I'm actually going to attempt that same Baker Creek Kohlrabi this year... We'll see how it goes!
So good roasted! I typically just slice it with a little salt, pepper, oil; toss on the grill.
I'm so envious of the climate of southern California. You can practically grow year round. I actually like seeing Jacques as your helper. You guys have great chemistry!
Love hearing about what your planting. As a fellow Californian it’s good to know what works best in our climate. This video is the motivation that I needed to go through my seed packs and pick out some brassicas and lettuce to start some seeds in my epic 6-cells.
Extremely soothing to sit here just listening to you guys talk about gardening.
Yup! Bulb planting time now here in the Netherlands. I always add some new ones and never dig up old ones. The older ones will either come up again a 2nd year or be 'absorbed' in the soil and just disappear. Always fun to see what comes up in the spring!
And escarole/andive: perfect in a potato mash with bacon! I still have some in my garden right now, does perfectly in Dutch fall weather (zone 8b).
I love that you guys are such good friends and the banter is so fun.
Thanks for the good info!
OMG THE CROW IN THE BACKGROUND CLASSIC
Loved you talking about watercress as a new discovery and how you'd *never* be able to grow it because you'd *never* have a river running through your backyard... And look at you now! A pond full of it and soup on rotation.
I very much enjoyed this video. I felt like we were visiting and having a great conversation. This played while I was purging files, so making that task seen to go by quickly.
Gladiolas and Daffodils you can leave in the ground. they will come back every year in So. Cal. also Naked Ladies, Many Dahlias will come back too. My DAD always called them a lazy Gardeners flower.
Good afternoon. I'm in Colorado and 28 deg is predicted for Thu evening. Hope to get my garlic in next week. Been bringing herbs in to grow in the house. Have a Wonderful Day.
It's still 63 in Texas I miss Colorado
It just hit 49! Here
I wish I had a friend I could garden and have wholesome (and sassy) seed starting convos with. You two make me smile 😊
I don't know how I feel about watching this.... had a little frost this morning so y'all just seed teasin me right now.
I love kohl robi!. The bulb tastes like radish and i eat the green leaves with salad. Send them my way with another birdies' bed. lol
You make it look so easy and so fun. When I do it, I overthink which seeds to start (limited space) and it takes me forever. This video is so soothing to watch, just like friends hanging out. Wished there was a dynamic duo in the Bay Area to follow along (climate-wise). Love you guys.
You guys are so funny. Great job entertaining us Garden Hermit!
“This tastes like garbage! And smells like it too!”😂😆🤣 Kevin I felt the that way about ALL brassicas growing up.
And my mom would start cooking at 9am so every Saturday morning I smelled sulfur gas throughout the whole house. 🥴
Jacques, try to make a simple soup with your escarole. I chop it, simmer in chicken broth with lots of garlic, 2 cans white cannelloni beans and the heel of parmigiana. Let it simmer about 30 minutes. Delicious!
This is literally my favorite channel
Hope everyone is doing well.😊
A 95-year-old Italian woman taught me my favorite way to make escarole. Bring to a simmer in chicken stock, add salt and crushed red pepper to taste and eat it as a soup. Delicious.
Love hanging out with you guys 🙂
An Epic Duo!
Hyssop is lovely in stirfrys and noodles x
These are some of my favorite videos Kevin love them
I really enjoy the chill banter and jokes. Listening to this makes me feel like I am back home among people I grew up with
Watercress salad is delish Filipino style:
Steam a bunch already cleaned like spinach. Slice thinly some tomatoes and green onion white only. Toss in your home-made dressing: lemon juice, evoo and salt and pepper. I can have this every other day. This same recipe, I sub watercress with spinach, rapini and some other soft leafed veggies.
I’m watching this a year too late but I just did my set of seed beds in my apartment, best feeling ever. ❤❤
Thank you for pronouncing Nevada correctly there Jacques! We greatly appreciate it :)
I remember as a kid I went to coco's too they have this really good Buffalo chicken bites Cobb salad and I swear it was the most amazing salad ever.
Some of my favorite videos are of you and Jacques just talking while doing garden stuff.
That was the most delightful, entertaining, informative, and inspiring gardening videos I have ever seen. You two are truly the Epic Dynamic Duo! This might have been your longest video, but it wasn't long enough! I hope you two do this again.
Appreciate this! We may do 1 per month
I’m so happy you’re adding more flowers to your garden!! I felt the same way as the Garden Hermit at the beginning, but now I’m even more into flowers than veggies 🌸
Ps did the editor intentionally not cut the part where you clapped? That was hilarious 😂
LOL it was a mistake
@@epichomesteading my favorite mistake ever, idk why but seeing stuff that I’m not “supposed” to see always endears me to creators more. Feels like breaking the 4th wall in a non-meta way.
I really love this video! So fun and yes i think i must be a hermit gardener! lol
Jacques needs one of those tiny houses you see on yt in the corner of the garden.
I like to boil my sprouts in apple juice.
I found a sprouting potato peel in my composter in mid June and planted it in my "science! pot. It also had leeks that i was trying to regrow from a supermarket end root.
I replanted the potatoes when the plant was about 2ft and i just unearthed 3 potatoes, about 1lb 3oz/ 548g. Largest was about 4.5 inches 11.5 cm. Need to wait until Sunday to harvest the rest and see what we got from the peel. Funny thing was, the actual peel fell off the sprout (chit?) when i planted it, so didn't expect anything of it. Was a bog standard cheap white potato from the supermarket.
I think after the horrible weather we have had in the UK this, this was a wonderful success (i was like a squealing school girl sending pictures to my dad! lol ) and i want to try sweet potatoes next. Having not grown potatoes before, it was interesting how much more earthy flavour came through. I made roast potatoes with the roast chicken and it was lovely.
I don't know what home grown leeks taste like but the regrown ones taste more like spring onions (scallions?).
My step father-in-law, spent years making a hybrid tomato. Sadly, he passed away in 2018 but my mother-in-law still kept growing them. 2019 - we got a plant from her, which was great as the varieties we got didn't do well and it was wonderful. 2020 - all seeds were sold out by the time we went to buy them. Lockdown happened but again was luckily enough to get another hybrid pot from the MIL in Feb before the total lockdown.
2021 - We prepped with Money makers and Beef steaks. About 16 seedlings made it to planting. we held off after a sudden late frost and thought we were in the clear. To our surprise, we also had a volunteer hybrid from last year, which grew faster and stronger than the other two varieties. Sadly, the storms damaged all the bedding ones, including the hybrid. We were fortunate enough to get tomatoes now from our containers but too late to benefit from a big planned harvest. Got two half pound/ 246g beefsteak tomatoes and lots of money makers all sizes.
I've since brought in some smaller tomatoes and a courgette plant pots into a small conservatory hallway, out of the dropping temperatures and heavy rain.
Now just extending and digging deeper into the bedding to try and get more drainage. Going to try autumn/ fall garlic.
Our wormery crate system from your video, is now in the workshop. From i think Feb till now, the 20 red worms we collected from the garden is now about 200. I often put a handful in our main outside darlek composter. The last change over/ clean wormery, i put in two handfuls of worms. This will help with the clay soil, greens and browns we mixed in, to go back into the new bedding spaces.
At the end of the day, it's all an experiment to see what grows well in our garden.
I’m about to start my fall garden and I’m so excited about it! I plan to document my journey on my channel ♥️
A Santa Ana is to do with the jetstream for us down here in Southern California. Santa Ana happens when the jetstream is way up North taking any system with it to the Northwest. Then the jetstream will dip straight down over Imperial County and when that happens. We end up with Eastward hot air blowing really drying it out for us in San Diego County.
Long videos are good! We learn so much from the both of you. Thank you.
Snapdragons can overwinter. I live in WA and mine lasted 3 years. It can handle heat and light snow.
This was so fun! Sit down, chill, but still educational with some banter and a bit longer. Would love more of these!
I'm glad Jacque got the Rossi de Salomi garlic. I ordered mine from Garlic gods and planted them last week. This is my second time growing garlic and I wasn't too successful last time.
I really enjoyed this! Thanks. Reminds me of growing up, my dad had tackle boxes of seeds and each of us kids would layout our littles gardens…
Gotta say, If you built a little garden cottage and rented it out on Airbnb I would be ALL over it! Spend a day or two in the Epic Garden at the Epic Homestead?! Count me in!
I loved this episode, Jacques' participation is always very funny yet informative. You should invite him more often :) Good luck with your seedlings in fall and keep us updated :)
More to come!
I know this is an older video but fyi the greens of leaks are great when roasted with ghee & salt & caramelized.
Your guys friendship and both your demeaners remind me of my best friend and me. He passed away almost 10 years ago and life has been pretty empty since. I'm a hermit and don't think I'll ever find another friend. Anyways, I already loved your show but once I heard your smuggling stories I love it even more now lol. You guys are great. Thank you for sharing so much info.
Dude, I’m from Prince Edward Island Canada. It’s an Island surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. We’ve got chowder down. It’s on every restaurant menu and made in every home.
I live in Texas and planted tons of marigolds for Dia De Los Muertos. I'm making a big altar for my deceased love ones. Happy planting.
Epic gardener,
I want to thank you so much for your support !! I start my first garden at 65 years old and love it. I started with sweet peppers, tomatoes and summer squash and it squash wS delicious! The peppers grow wonderful too. I have tomatoes too just Waiting until they ripe!!!
Holy crap, I’ve literally been watching you for over a year and was watching last falls videos and noticed that I had never subscribed to this channel 😂so uh, new subscriber, long time watcher 😅
I grow escarole to make a family recipe Escarole and beans. Sauté down in garlic and olive oil, add a couple cans of white northern (cannellini) beans partially smashed and chicken stock with some oregano. Serve with crusty bread.
Kohlrabi seeds are excellent for microgreens!
I have to say I do enjoy your banter and your collaboration.
Last night, hubby and I were reading descriptions of plant varieties from the SeedsNSuch booklet. Whoever writes those descriptions needs to write for romance novels!😆😆😆
escarole is amazing especially if you cook it down in stock. removes alot of the bitterness
Zone 10B . I have broccoli and beets doing well. Finally got some cauliflower started. Struggling with cabbage and may get some plant starts.
Waiting for the tomatoes to finish then I will start on peas. Lettuce, radishes and spinach all doing well. Weather temps swinging between low 70's and mid 80"s is not helping. lol!
Scabiosa has always been one of my favorite flowers. Most nurseries do not sell it any more.
I was watching and commenting throughout but you guys are just complete magic especially when chalk The Rock hermit sprinkled whatever he had in his hands by tapping his hands Kevin you know what you doing good luck man
Jacques and the Beanstalk. I love you guys hanging out together. :D
This is my favorite Epic video.
Thanks I need this vlog. Something ate every single kale and broccoli I planted this fall. Wasn’t going to replant but after watching this going to replant tomorrow in my epic 6 cells again.
Love Fall seeding with the boys!! Thank you for sharing! 👍
In NC I started snapdragon thinking they were annuals.. I was surprised when they overwintered and bloomed even better the next year!
I’m still catching on the fun-o-Rama at both the homestead and garden. Y’all bring so much useful info in an accessible fashion. Thanks!
LOL, yep I got the Kohlrabi too!
Escarole sautéed with garlic, hot peppers, crispy bacon and olice oil then topped with parmesan and some breadcrumbs is the best
I would watch this for the banter, but watercress soup is on the menu and I will try leeks! Jacque has been a great addition.
So much fall info for me to glean for my zone. Long vid to boot. Thanks for all you do Kevin, as usual.
Y'all are great together. This was a totally fun video. I found myself smiling and chuckling throughout.
Love you two together, totally my jam! I can't grow anything over here in 4b Montana so I'm living vicariously through you guys.... thank you!
I use the green and white part of the leek when I make my bacon and leek pasta.
Thanks for keeping it entertaining!
"never will be" but Ive already seen your watercress planted at the pond river. New here binge watching both channels Im in love with all of it.
I kid you not, just saw someone show off a stinzen set up, if that's what you call it, on a facebook gardening page I am part of. I hadn't had time to look it up yesterday and forgot until you mentioned. Its like you know exactly what gardening questions I have. I have no seeds to sew but it was fun to watch none the less.
42:50 lmao! That's EXACTLY how I remember eating Brussels sprouts 🤣
I live in the tropics which mean i get 2 season (Hot and Monsoon) so i kinda plant all year round non-stop cause the weather is more or less the same. But plant variety, in terms of vegetables is limited due to really high temperature, but growing trees is no problem for me.
Great video, awesome guys. Love seeing the two of you together 😃
This intro was so wholesome xo
I love this one, I love the chatter between you and Jaques. Very fun to watch along and drink my tea and plant some seeds. Thanks 🙏
Another thing to do with small edible flowers is to preserve some in ice cube trays to decorate some cool drinks
This is a fun and diverse garden adventure show. Super-hero gardening duo you are indeed.
