Okay, but the how to get motivated after losing a harvest answer was so helpful to me. I lost about half my garden and all my first growth of tomatoes after a hydraulic line burst and coated my plants in potentially toxic chemicals. I was so depressed about it that, other than occasional watering, I stopped thinking about my garden at all because of how much I lost. I hope I never have that happen again, but thinking about it in terms of opportunity to plant something else that might be exciting, even if it has to be shorter season and non-vegetable, is a great approach.
Also, I LOVED this video. I loved your answers and how excited you seemed about the personal questions, things you like and whatnot. It was a fun change of pace and still managed to be very educational and inspiring.

Kevin, I would like you to post your credentials on the "About" section of your page. It is important to know the background of those which advice we follow. For instance:
Where did you get your knowledge from?
Do you have a degree in horticulture?
Where do you get your information from?
How many years do you have working in horticulture? Etc...
As to this Q&A, do what you are comfortable doing. Do not feel that you have to do it just because other people do it. You do a good job explaining things on your videos.
I look forward to hearing from you. Happy Holidays!!

Just found you. Was the 'Caboose' of 8 kids. Mother and Father were children of the Great Depression. Mom always, ALWAYS had a kitchen garden. As the youngest I was eventually put in charge of said garden, so was handed down the wisdom of 'The Olders'. The simplest, easy to manage stuff always works best. If it's not broke don't fix it. Experiment, because that's fun, and can lead to new productive stuff, but trying to reinvent the wheel can lead to disaster, not good if you're counting on that food. Love your approach to all this. It's obvious you have a passion for life, and actually enjoy what you're doing. Loved how you answered so many diverse questions with such an easy, calm flow. I would like it if you did more of these, but it up to you I'll probably watch your future anyway, I'm still trying to older stuff right now.
PS I'm super jealous of the zone you're in, and you've got about 8X the space I do. Curse a you Banzai!

Hi Kevin! You definitely have a UCSB personality! Laid back yet steadfast in your will to succeed. Way to go Kevin. I was on the edge of my seat as you expressed which University you went to. I volunteered at Fairview Gardens in Goleta, CA when I was attending UCSB (2012-2016) and that served as my first exposure to gardening, growing, and composting. There are gardens all throughout the UCSB campus. I enjoy this style of video because it gives the audience a realistic view of how to become self-sufficient. You and Mark from self-sufficient me really caught my eye, as you both have such engaging perspectives when it comes to self-reliance and homesteading. Thank you Kevin, keep inspiring us all to grow! People come from all over the world to do both. the sandstone climbing walls and archs here are unique, along with some limestone ones. I cant rock climb any more either unfortunately but I still hike a ton here and work here... well a ton too now that I think about it😂. I used to hike about every day, but Ive dedicated most of the summer days to gardening now and save my hiking for cooler weather. less sweat and less people lol✌❤

I can tell, you're a kinesthetic learner, like me. :) Enjoyed this video. For those doing small apartment gardening, I would definitely recommend doing a worm farm, and processing all your veg scraps though them. Because nothing grows big plants, in small containers, like worm wee and castings! It helps to condition the soil too. Also look at using diluted hydrogen peroxide, as it helps to keep the soil aerated.

Omg so the question about what tree would you be when you die, it’s actually a thing you can do! You choose the tree you want to “be”, then they capsulate your body and plant you under the tree. People put plaques on them, or a bench underneath, etc. Thats my plan for when it’s my time. Side note: you can also turn your ashes into coral to help revitalize the reefs 😊 There are options out there to really go full circle, and be returned back into the earth in some beneficial way. Definitely a great thing to consider!

I don’t hear about people with CFS very often. My mom has had CFS for over 20 years. She has discovered that succulents are a form of gardening that she can handle, since they don’t require much work. The veggie pod is a good idea, I’ll have to look into that for her.

I have to say the Vege-Pod was a great idea for me. I'm almost 6 feet tall myself, and bending/stooping to take care of plants is both painful and exhausting, hence frustrating. Having Kevin help me set up the garden the first time was great. The 2nd cycle I started all the veggies from seeds, indoors, and then transplanted to the Vege-Pod. I harvested lettuce, kale, endive, spinach and bok choi for months. Not sure what I'll plant for the fall season. I hope you are able to figure something out for your mom :) Good luck! Epic Mom

I've had M.E(cfs) for 22 years (mainly housebound and in a wheelchair out the house) so have to make a lot of adaptations to be able to garden. Things I've found that helped are tall raised beds, mine are wooden and on legs, so I can sit at them to garden. Any kind of container gardening is much easier than in ground. I can sit comfortably at a table to plant then have someone move the pots for me. Also, planting things that don't require much maintenance. Carrots, onions, leeks etc that you just plant, watch them grow and pull when done. Anything that requires lots of pruning, repeat harvesting, weekly feeds etc are so much more work so planting strategically helps. Perennial herbs are great too, it's nice to be able to add a bit of something home grown to a meal and they require little attention.

@@nenemaria-cornfieldsgarden That's great to hear. All good ideas for anyone who is physically challenged. I'm in my 30th year with ME/CFS. In addition to feeling somewhat productive when I now garden, the organic food is healthy and I have a positive focus. So it's a win-win 🥗👩‍🌾

That spreadsheet sounds awesome. Right now I map out everything in my head and use colour coded tags for specific varieties of whatever I'm growing. We lost a great big old tree this June in a storm. It shaded a large section of the back yard. The silver lining is that I will expand my garden next spring. I will need to up my game to map out/keep track of everything in a much larger garden. BNL?!? No friggin' way! Never would've guessed.

Enjoyed this video, Thanks!!! I love learning new things and trying new foods. A friend gave me an instant pot, and It’s magic! I used it to cook a bunch of different tomato mixes, then put it through a sieve for hot tomato juice as well as sauces. It’s so cool, it can cook as you do other things. There are a lot of dump and go meals too.

Hey, man!! I have been dealing with mad horn worms this season. I walked out the door and saw the striped stalks here and there, and Everywhere...I found them and relocated them. Then, the next day I went out and started pruning. As I was pruning I thought, 'Why do I do this? You just collected and removed the natural wild life that was doing the pruning for you." I know it is not quite the same, but if you grow the amount that I do- there will be enough to go around. Now the critters on my brassicas? That's a whole different ball game!! Also, Love the bare foot skating!!

If that tower garden beside you was on caster wheels like a lazy Suzan it could be great for maximizing use of small space for growth on an apartment balcony...could be great for anyone to maximize sun or shade exposure by rotation too

Hi. I like the AMA. It gets you out of responding to individual questions n it's something to do on hot days when it's to not to get out n work in the garden. My QUESTION is, do you go over to the other house n still plant n garden there also? Peace to you and yours

Hey Kevin! I saw you had a IGTV video about growing a meyer lemon tree in a container. I'd love to learn about other fruit trees that can grow in containers/on patios and the best place/website to get them from as I'm looking to get my mom one for her birthday.

If you do an origin story, I’d love to hear more about your Filipino grandmother and her gardening. I come from Eastern European stock, urban people for whom gardening is a mysterious skill, so the only gardening I do is in containers. I grow wonderful herbs in those containers and hope to use your videos to broaden my choice of crops. Though no tomatoes because the squirrels get to them before I can!
