I bought bales of straw and a wood chipper but now have wheat sprouting from the top of the unchipped bale and throughout my Solarized what was about ready to plant in garden. A neighbor prefers to mulch with alfalfa. Deer are lured there by that. Garden straw does not mildew like alfalfa does.
We call that planting technique “willy-nilly“! About June we just start sticking plants and seeds in willy-nilly all around the garden to fill in the gaps.
After disturbing the roots that bad in the middle of summer you will have better results if you pinch off the terminal growth off of every branch so there is less demand for water up top. It gives the roots time to recover and be ready for the new buds that pop up.
I'm really enjoying these Epic Homesteading videos. It's fun to see someone's garden progressing while I'm stuck in winter garden jail down in the southern hemisphere.
I can only afford to put in a few trees at a time but my food forest is starting to come together. I started planting in 2019 after watching RUclips videos for around 2 years. I have bought a few plants a month since I started. lol found a lot of fruit trees for real cheap at Walmart on the off season. They were 5-6 foot trees and I think I paid $8 each for them. I topped them all out and had to cut/ un-tangle the roots bc they were extremely root bound. They are doing great now.
My dad is an orchardist. I have nothing but respect for those that can do it well… (the obstacles can be something fierce) 💪🏻💪🏻 Currently I’m an urban gardener doing the best I can with a teeny yard (not big enough for trees)!!
Looks good man 🙂 , I have mature queen palms too and when I trim up the huge frawns I chop off the leaves with a machete and let the stem dry and you got yourself free nutrients rich mulch and a trellis material because the stem when it dries is as strong as bamboo!!
How can you have the fruit trees so close together? Are they all dwarf trees? Will they get pruned in a way that allows them to be that close? Also, I thought it was recommended to let the roots soak for quite a while before planting. Sorry, tons of questions. I'm learning here. :)
$100 trees! Wow, glad I don't buy potted fruit trees for the most part. Bare root is sooo cheap and I've had 100% success with those that I've put in the ground. Plus you never have to deal with rootbound plants :)
Hey Kevin, have you looked into tree guilds at all? I'm playing around with them at home on my own fruit trees (interplanting citrus and stone fruit with CA natives such like Coyote Mint, Buckwheat, Lavender, white clover, etc.) but I think you're in a unique position to educate/enlighten us all the benefits of growing native plants, shrubs, and trees. I think it'd be a great idea for an episode, not to mention being able to see grow over the weeks/months/years on RUclips! I'm a big fan, man, and have to thank you for all the help you've provided me over the past few years. Keep up the great work!
I planted 20 fruit trees this summer in my San Diego backyard. Of those 1 has dropped all its leaves and branches - a Pinkerton avocado. 2 other avocados have leaves that are getting crispy and falling off - a bacon and hass/lamb. I think they are very sensative to too much sun compared to other fruit trees. I am putting up some shade canopy this week and hopefully that will help them. I put some shade canopy up over my Capulin Cherry and it is now putting up new growth. My other tree that is not doing great is my Keo savoy Mango. Its leaves are also crispy and it has no growth. I believe that one is also sun sensative but needs warmer temps for new growth.
I usually can about 50 pints of green beans every year, never had any problems with beans until this year. I had to replant my green beans three times this year to get a crop and it still looks weak. I understand you "bean" pain this year. (zone 7 TN)
The 2 fruit trees that have failed in our backyard: apple and persimmon. I think it's just that the location they were planted was terrible. Bad, bad soil, and it's in the middle of a big concrete walkway, so there's probably zero microbial action. We do have 2 grape vines that are just insane every year.
Hi! We have a very big orchard with a lot of apples. We never tried persimmon, but we have sweet and sour cherries, grapes, apricots, pears, plums and more. If those two trees are the only fruit trees you ever planted there, then maybe there is a problem with the soil, but if there are other fruit trees that are alive, then it is possible that it was just bad luck. Some trees simply die and it's hard to tell what the reason is. I have noticed that it matters a lot if the variety of plant you have was grown for your area, not just zone, but the area where you live.
That "produce rack" is basically a wooden version of what we in the restaurant industry call a speed rack. Really cool! I want one for my home kitchen now
if like crack punkin seeds. omega three fats. small decoration punkins have lots seeds but don't much space and not very big. bake oven take pliers crack hull off. punkin seed eat is green. add to salads or cereal. small grow up fence that stick in raised beed. grow tiny punkin strait up. have flowers bring bees pollinator other stuff.

I think it's hotter in WI than it is in CA for the last month. Nonstop 90+. My mustard plants noped out but my corn is breaking records for growth, my cucumbers don't mind it, and I didn't know individual potato plants could get 3 feet tall.
Produce rack is amazing! I also wanted to say I used to use Dr Earth fertilizer and when I went they were out. I bought the espoma plant tone instead because I remembered you used it, I’m absolutely loving the results with the espoma. I’m a forever customer for espoma now.
We planted a Flavor Queen Pluot this spring, but will graft a pollinator this next early spring from a plum. They are so yummy, my friend had shared some a couple years ago and I couldn’t keep my hands off of them. Just SO GOOD!!!
I thought you weren’t crazy about HOT..HOT..peppers! Make cowboy candy again and use the less hot peppers and use some sweet peppers. It’s still yummy on burgers or cream cheese with crackers. YUMMY!!!
I know this is an older video but you should store potatoes in the dark, you don't want them to go green unless you're going to use them as seed potatoes.
So if you have hard neck garlic, you cant braid them because their ‘necks’ are too stiff! So dont feel bad!! Soft neck garlic you can braid, but you need to do it before they’re totally dry and brittle. Next year. No biggie ;)

Hi Kevin, can you please keep us updated on the apple tree? I planted 1 last year here in Canada zone 6a and it didn't bloom, I bought a bigger one this year that already had blooms, not long after planting all the blooms fell off and we are still waiting to see if it will bloom again!
I tried waiting, and even hung out an attractant for ladybugs and lacewings, but by the time one solitary ladybug showed up, my nasturtium plant was a goner. Unbelievable… I didn’t think anything could kill that plant.
I live in the country and it's a bit funny to see people grow wheat for flour in their gardens. I get it and wheat is pretty too, but ... it's a bit funny. 😊

Epic Homesteading, don't waste your time blasting off the aphids. Concentrate efforts on building the ecosystem that will balance the aphids. I have never lost a tree from aphids and I have had some unbelievable infestations

Grrr, I have dwarf beauty king seeds from the DTP and can’t get them to germinate, it’s the weirdest thing. Also couldn’t germinate the Dwarf Andy 40’s. Think my seeds aren’t viable anymore. 😔

I have 21 fruit trees on less than 1/5 acre. It’s totally possible! I also grow loads of veggies and flowers.

I have seen pumpkin vines run away and climb trees and fences. In fact my pumpkin plants always leave the yard.
I never water the plants in the sun water the soil only.
those nasturtium drop a bajillion seeds.. gotta keep your eye on them.
You can ferment the seeds and make nasturtium capers. I haven’t tried it myself yet.
Is a deep soak once or twice a week all the water you give your tomatoes?
I had aphids on my apple trees too but you just need to give it time for the predatory insects to find and eat them. My trees are 100% clear now.

How do you keep the weeds from coming through the mulch? I laid at least 6 inches & the Bermuda grass thrived!
For Bermuda, it seems like literally 2' min is the least it can't get through
