Anyone else get a "woah" moment when the pallet jack went off the end of the truck lift? Lol. Good to see the Epic Homestead coming up! I like those corrugated steel raised beds, built to last. Great planters on the fence as well, no space wasted. Can't wait to see this space in full swing! Keep up the awesome work Kevin!

My dad built a bat house for me, since we live across from a lake, I had a real problem with mosquitoes. I have two bats living in it now, it’s really helped, you might want to try one.💕

Someone, I can't remember who, advised this as an alternative living space if you have bats being a nuisance and trying to get into your attic or other destructive nesting.

My first Birdies Bed arrived this past week and I finished filling it on Saturday. What I love most about it is I was able to assemble it myself! I am getting older and more limited in my abilities. When I built my wooden raised bed, my son had to help me. I couldn't do it myself. He has since grown and moved away, so I am limited to projects I can perform independently. Birdies Beds afford that sort of independence. It felt great knowing that I could do it myself. I can't wait to get planting in it, but my growing season is just about over. I'm considering putting my garlic in it instead of in the wooden bed.
Thank you for making it possible to have these beds in the U.S.

You're doing a huge amount of work so be easy on yourself about not getting videos out as quickly as you'd like. Even as a 10+ year gardener, I've learned so much from all of your videos and am so excited to see how the Homestead is progressing. You always have so many helpful tips and I appreciate the one in this video about free soil from your municipality. The cowboy candy recipe is amazing! I added some Filus Blue for some additional color and will be making this again soon. Hello, from zone 4b!

Hey Kevin, I have been looking into well a bunch of stuff but what I have learned is that when tree farmers plant trees to cut they will intermingle different kinds near each other rather than planting all of one kind together. this helps reduce pests that like certain plants much like companion plants and disease because it can't spread as easily.

Thank you for the great info on compost from the landfill! I'm in Ohio and looked for this kind of resource near me and found a service that collects food waste from the community, creates soil blends/compost, and sells bags of it at a few local stores. I'd much prefer to use community supported and created compost that saves food waste from going into a landfill! Thanks!!

I got plenty of exercise in my garden today, plus I’m trying to walk at least a mile a day and plush ups every morning. I need to loose weight, so hopefully I’ll reach my weight loss goals with those activities. Plus, I plan on eating healthier with all the vegetables that I’m growing.

I hope you're feeling better, I know your back was sore......dead hang several times a day, it is so good for your spine. You work so hard. I'm eyeballing all that cardboard in the background, sheet mulch heaven!! I just finished expanding my garden with sheet mulching AND I've been scrounging HT pallets to make 2 bigger compost bins. More garden = more compost. I will now commence begging my neighbors for veggie food scraps. Got lots of brown, need more green. I think a lot of us urban/backyard gardeners are going full out, what was a fun healthy hobby has become more.......essential. My sunny back yard is now 3/4 veg garden. I already warned hubby he WILL be learning gardening. With any luck maybe we'll get to live with that fabulous worm butt bag after all. He's thrilled.......

You are teaching us so much more than just 'everything plant' Kevin. You are teaching & sharing everything that goes with becoming an interested, caring & devoted 'Urban Gardener'. The definition of Urban Gardening, I found, say's "Urban Gardening is to create an abundance of food. By supporting and encouraging the establishment of gardens on unused land and space while increasing diversity, raising awareness for health and wellness, and inspiring and educating youth, adults and seniors to create". Long short short here, I could understand just why you felt the need to 'take a bit of down time', but in saying this......you are not only creating abundance by doing what you do, but you teach us it's ok to stay healthy and well (mentally, physical & emotionally) by taking 'down time'. No worries!! ;-)

Not all soil from the county's land fill is created equal. I stopped getting soil mix from our county as you had to load it yourself (which is fine), it has bits of glass, chunks of trash and a ton of sand in it, very heavy. I was actually afraid to use because I didn't know what was in it, so i stopped going. At the time I didn't know where to get the soil tested. Now that I have all this knowledge I can better assess the soil. It's been 2 years since I've been back and I'm wondering if it's changed at all? I still reccomend people go check out what their county has to offer but to be smart about it. This isn't to scare anyone but to educate of what could possibly happen. I wish getting soil wasn't such a challenge, my soil is mostly sand. Love seeing all the progress you've made! I look forward to all your future projects!

Congrats on your new place! What a great experience to start from scratch! I do have a suggestion. Have you ever heard of pigeon peas? I've been learning about it as a friend of mine loves them. Its a great legume that grows on perennial bushes that frankly can reach 6-12 feet. It can serve as a good wind break and provides dappled shade for other plants. It's a great way to get started on improving soil, and it's food for you and your future chickens! 🤣

Hi Kevin, You have been very busy. I am so excited to see the new shed. 😁 I hope that your new roof is a superior quality roof! Not being negative.....flat roofs have tendencies to leak. The advice on the new roof with solar panels is spot on. My roof was only about 5 years old before I decided to get panels. Best to wait and get the panels with the new roof. Otherwise you're roof will expire before your panels will and you'll be paying a remove and reinstall to replace your roof during the life of your panels. That's extra costs you don't want to have to eat up later.

I'd be careful planting any deciduous fruiting trees in the Fall. SD conditions a tad different from most of country but there still not a lot of time for the tree to send new roots before shutting down down until Spring. Risky messing with the root ball at this time of year.

It can be hard to do, but the best way how to get rid of mosquitoes and flies in the garden is the usage of wasps, ants, mantises and other insectivores. I try to promotie their presence to decrease the bad things

I have found plenty of plastic in the Miramar (city of SD) compost. It's cost effective but the city does not recommend it for direct planting.

@@epichomesteading Maybe they've cracked down in the past year to meet the standards they claim on their website. Good to know!

I truly love those terracotta pots for your dragon fruit. Where did you get them? Also does your friend sell cuttings of his varieties of dragon fruit? I don't remember if that was mentioned in that video. A couple of those from the taste test video seemed really appealing to me.
