First off congrats 🎉 on your wedding. This is such a good series so far. I’ve been saying this for years Atlanta in a way changed the beauty standards in the mainstream. It started with the young lady who was in outkast videos back in the day and Buffy just took it to another level. Both women didn’t have to be scandalous to get attention and I think that doesn’t sit well with women of other racial groups who want to compete with BW for the entertainers with financial success. DSBW found a way to compete. I think we need to keep that in mind. Our bodies are usually natural.
Wooooww!! I totally forgot about this sista. Buffie the Body during the late 1990s early 2000s. Was the "It" Black girl at that time. Many of us Black men, especially those of us within the Hip Hop community., Where lazer focused on this sista, something serious. In one interesting aspect. She definitely shed more of the spotlight on Dark skinned and voluptuous built Black women.
Yes!! So true. Plus, so many BW wanted her body. She made good money from her fitness program because of it. I have some criticism about that, which I will be sharing, but overall, she is a cultural icon in the Black community that many have forgotten.
Representing the return of Jesus Christ soon to come with no spot or wrinkle coming back to take his people and Church with The rapture out of Earth into heaven also the body of Christ with Kingdom marriage I hope that you will stay prayed up and also stay close to God Almighty because we are really living in the last days the end of the age
Thank you so much for this video. You made really great points about the difference of the buffie- the-body body shape on black women vs non black women and how only one group benefits from it, greatly.
I know what she means about not wanting to be skinny. When I was in school , it felt like many people went out their way to make me feel unattractive. Some people made fun of me for being skinny. Some people picked at my nose and my teeth. I also remember why I became obsessed with weave and wigs. When I was in highschool, my cousin gave me a makeover. She permed my hair. She put in some long black tresses. The difference was night and day. When I went to school the next day,the black guys who ignored me were asking who I was. White guys were telling me I looked great. The girls who had snubbed me were taking notice. This was just the beginning of me internalizing the fact that hair and a body made you beautiful. Of course, I know that's not the complete case. But, it was a long road to self love and self acceptance. I hate that when black women express what some people deem as self hate, others act like this came out of a void. People act like their isn't colorism and all kinds of isms in the black community. Black women like many women just want to feel beautiful like other women of other cultures. It is not always so easy in a world that has tried constantly to downplay the natural beauty of many black women. Some of our decisions in beauty have come from the traumas experienced from the harsh realities around us . I really am glad we are living in a time where we are encouraged to accept our natural beauty. I'm hoping it is not just a passing trend like the shortlived 60's and 70's period of I'm black and I'm proud. I hope our race feels like this forever, here on out. And getting back to the actual topic of your video, I heard about Buffy the Body for the first time because of my lustful high school boyfriend. Guys were crazy about her in the 90's.
Thank you for sharing your experience 🙏🏾. So well said 💎. The isms are definitely showing with regard to Buffie and many BW who were once teased and now that their look is trending, their DM’s are full. I also learned about Buffie from a guy I used to date 😂😅.
Buffie definitely set a lotta this off. Key point, though, compared to other video vixens, she "got out the game" at the right time. And she wasn't looking for a celebrity couple type thing.
Its me again, Just saw an interview with Rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot on Vlad TV. And he spike in depth about creating the song, Baby Got Back. Real intelligent brother. I think that song definitely played a role in contributing to the whole "Big Bootie" phenomenon during the early 1990s.
Yes my old job there were lots of young girls who were my co-workers, like 19 to 24. Most of them had banging bodies. But because they didnt have Big gigantic butts they wanted to gain weight. It was so crazy. They werent as small as Buffie the Body was, but they were under 145lbs. Many of them did gain weight and some butt got bigger, an one breast got bigger. But they all looked huge. Being big didnt look good on them, i was like dang you had the perfect body from head to toe. Now alls you got to look at now is the booty in the winter time. But they had those summer and spring bodies at first, the type that is mouth watering at the pool. i see even on youtube alot of channels of girls going on their weight gain journey. i remember when i was 145lbs there was one lady. i tried to talk too an she made fun of me being skinny, another lady said she perfers teddy bears, she likes a man she grab on too. an spread her arms around. The last lady was respectful she didnt go into all the you look sick you need to eat, i heard from girls, you look like i could break you. etc etc. Albeit all these women were below 8/10 in looks. most of my girlfriends when i was skinny were 9s and 10s. My ex wife was 8/10 she approached me when i was 30. So i can imagine the mistreatment she got as a kid, thats so sad that it changed her in such away.
@@nnekaonyilofor I gained weight on purpose. I'm on my fat loss journey now. Just started intermittent fasting and walking 90 minutes a day. However, lifting weights gaining muscle makes weight fluctuate up. I started my weight gain journey around 25....
Technically slim thick has been around maybe not the term but the shape has been around though. She so happen to be more known for her slim thickness and not too mentioned there's levels to being slim thick. For example in Africa you'll see slim thick women just about everywhere it's normal there. African women are known for their beautiful back sides and curvaceous shapes and at any body type too as far as on a heathy body and not just on one particular body type.
Never was into her at all….no sex appeal or feminine edge! Plus the masculine voice is a sure deal breaker! What respect does she deserve? She played the role of a video vixen/rap groupie! There were plenty of women in her era that played this exact role….she ain’t special
Hey everyone! My apologies for the white noise for the first 1.5 mins. The original audio was recorded like that. Thank you for watching!
Gurr'rlll don't nobody care about that noise-we are ALWAYS coming to support *You **Lady!!!👏👏👏
@blkjesusel9778 Awww, thank you! I am very critical of my videos 🙃.
Congratulations 🎊🍾🎉 on the wedding!!! Great video ❤
Thank you for both! 🙏🏾
Thank you Nneka for covering the "Buffie the Body" phenom. I enjoy your content and it is appreciated.
Thank you so much for your support l! 🙏🏾
Before Buffie, it was Ki Toy Johnson from OutKast’s “The Way You Move” video. She had the same shape as well.
Great reminder. I looked her up, but can’t find a lot about her. Was she featured in any other videos, movies, etc?
@@nnekaonyilofor Ki toy leads a real quiet life. She was my main video vixen crush back in the day fyi, lol

I had a childhood friend who was absolutely obsessed with Buffie The Body. To him, she was a goddess.
It’s so interesting how so many BM loved her and yet, she was treated so poorly by some of them. More on that later…

Congratulations on your nuptial. Wish you as many or more years than me and my wife. Celebrating 34 years this year.😊😊😊😊
Buffy isn't slim thick..she's just thick
Throw back yes we all remember her 🙏bless her 🎉❤
Her melinated skin is the answer as to why....she didn't get the Kim K recognition,
I agree that colorism played a role for sure.
5' 7" 113lbs is PURRRRFect!
She said 119lbs
Facts. That’s Goddess tier.
In the black community that’s skinny and everyone tells you to eat more. Absolutely ridiculous
To her it was not enough. What you think of yourself matters more than anything. If you've been influenced by media, it's detrimental thinking.

Yeah. The “weight gain journey” is tricky. Many women naturally gain weight with age/children. I can’t imagine gaining it on purpose at a young age.
