- The case of climate activist Deanna 'Violet' Coco demonstrates just how “out of touch” the media is with many Australians, according to Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton.
Ms Coco was granted bail earlier this week after she was sentenced to a minimum of eight months in prison for a protest on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which prevented an ambulance from responding to an emergency.
“For many in the media, the narrative was very prominent that a 15-month jail sentence was way too harsh,” Mr Houghton said.
Mr Houghton said journalists at Crikey ran an “uncritical” opinion piece from Ms Coco on their website, where she alleged she was “threatened with sexual assault and even starved by police”.
“We checked with NSW Police who assure us these claims are not credible, and Coco never even filed a complaint with them before airing the allegations,” Mr Houghton said.
“Did one journalist think to simply pick up the phone and call police before supporting this woman?”
Remember when protesting during covid had all the media saying that you're basically a terrorist for wanting to walk through a park or eat a sandwich at the beach?
Political allegiance does not dictate the extent of your rights, but with the media and our government you'd have a hard time proving it.

I have a radical idea-- since the police are so bad, have them stand down in situations like this. Let the affected citizens handle the situation. I refer back to the statement pointing to the idea that since the world is on fire, everything is permissible. Therefore the citizens have as much right to use their methods as Violet does. I do believe that the protestors would be the first to scream for police protection after citizen remedies were applied.

Whatever she was protesting about is irrelevant. Her actions disrupted one of Sydney's most important traffic routes, she broke the law. Remember that the ends can never justify the means. Actions are right or wrong, legal or illegal irrespective of WHY they were committed. Her reasons don't matter, period.
"Protesting" is not and never was a license to break the law, or to inconvenience thousands of people and potentially endanger lives. So forget about why she did it. The motives, beliefs and causes of a law breaker are automatically suspect - wisdom dictates steering well clear of whatever she was on about :).
There are organised protests yes. With permissions given times that need to be observed... BUT there is one BUT the police need to be in control if it gets out of hand and someone who didnt see this getting out of hand is more of not equally to blame
If an ambulance cannot respond due to one road incident, it shows a huge problem for the ambulance service.
As for Coco, advantage via deception charges should be laid and the money confiscated as proceed of crime.

Sky News is always so extremely biased against anyone who tries to take action on Climate Change that it manages even to turn Violet Coco into someone to admire. I should avoid watching anything on Sky, which distorts all stories, because Sky's appalling bias on this story makes me even a bit sympathetic with Extinction Rebellion.
